Shaw is inconsistent aggression-wise, like, well Harbaugh early in his tenure. Nevertheless it cost us the game this time around and that needs to be his priority in the offseason. I don't care if you had a mutant combination of Lou groza and Adam vinitieri--ALWAYS GO FOR 7. And yes, I was saying this before the drive and after the OK State timeout.
It's a shame, because I thought the gameplan was overall quite good.

There's Chip Kelly...and then there's David Shaw? GO FOR THE EFFING TOUCHDOWN when you have three timeouts, a couple of tall receivers masquerading as run-blocking tight ends, and a game to win.
Mack Brown gets away with his senior kickers making game-winning FGs as time expires. Jordan hasn't even finished IHUM. Maybe this is David Shaw's defining moment? :(
I'd like to know if the holder for the kicks got the ball down correctly or if the kicks were tipped =\

Well, there is no reason to play stupid at the end by calling timeouts and "going for it". They win the game with a field goal and go to OT otherwise. That is the smart play for all you Tuesday morning quarterbacks out there. I think they might have been able to get a few yards closer, but it was 3rd down, so no guarantees. Who knows, we are all just guessing. I really hope Shaw doesn't take advice from the internet and turn into a gambling fool. He did everything right in regulation.
At the end of regulation, the snap was perfect, the hold was perfect, the protection was perfect. Hook City.
In OT, the snap was low, the laces were backward, the protection was perfect. Hook City.
Wouldn't have mattered. Field goals were futile at that point anyway.
Nice tackle by Howell at the end.

Shaw was too busy to watch Williamson freaking out behind the bench on the last drive, so I really can't blame him for ending the game like every other sane coach in America would. They could have run one more play, and I would have run one more play just to burn clock, but a 32 yard field goal from dead center is about as good as it gets for the win.
Williamson was 75% from the 30 yard range going into this game--so there was always that 25% chance that he would miss. On the other hand, Andrew Luck was 0% for interceptions in the red zone for the season. Taking a shot or two at the end zone would have been a good percentage choice. Especially on a play-action, which had been set up beautifully.
As for Jordan, there are some excellent sports psychologists he could work with. While the most important attribute for a kicker is leg, the second most important is amnesia.
