Re: A theory re: Nunes and Shawwhat we've needed all year at QB - JohnOlenchalk - 11-04-2012
Is a playmaker, not a game manager. Looks like we found one. Shaw was as surprised as everyone else, that's why he was parsing himself after the game. I think he was more shocked at how the team responded to Hogan after two more miserable series from Nunes. I thought the playcalling was more wide open too, we did a lot of different stuff, didn't just go into a shell and pound the rock between the tackles and throw gopher balls. Too bad it took him so long to shake off his fears and go with a new guy at signal caller

Perhaps it was less Shaw taking the time to "shake off his fears" and more Hogan taking the time to get ready to be the #1 QB. Looks like he's ready now, and it looks like Shaw is ready to start him.

Keep in mind that this was Colorado. We are the lowest scoring of the Pac-12 teams that have beaten Colorado, although not by much. After looking at the stats from UCLA-Colorado, I expect that Hogan is at least an average quarterback, which is what this team needs.

Close, but not quite. UCLA scored less than we did (42) against Colorado. Of course, the overall point is still valid -- hard to draw many conclusions other than that we appear to have a near-average Pac-12 offense (at least when it comes to beating up on the hapless :)).

I looked at the Colorado-U.SC box score and was almost shocked to see that Colorado had 25 first downs and 351 yards of total offense (6 and 76 against Stanford, and 12 and 245 against Oregon). Ok, 2nd strings involved there. I think Stanford is getting a lot of guys involved in defense. Now Barner gains over 300 yards rushing against U.SC. Was he ever met at the line of scrimmage? I don't know what my point is. I guess that U.SC's defense is bad.

Took a look at the play by play and box score of Colorado's other games. Hundley (who is a stud) played nearly the entire game, and Barkley (who used to be a stud) played 3 quarters of the game. Given that Hogan did his work in about 2 quarters, I would say based on the sample size of 1 opponent, he is better than an average Pac-12 quarterback. We will know more Saturday.Â
The last time I was this excited about a Stanford football game would have been last year's Oregon game.
EDIT: took a closer look. Barkley scored 6 TDs, sacked and fumbled twice. Can't tell if he was behind center on a drive where they ran the ball 3 times and punted. Hundley sacked/fumbled once, and they punted 5 times. Again the Hogan-led Stanford offense compares favorably.

Normally good teams will devise plans to take away the QBs strengths. However since Colorado is so bad, I don't think OSU will have a good read on what Hogan's real tendencies and call preferences are at this point.
I expect the team that will have a clue on Hogan's preferences is Oregon since they will have access to the OSU game.
