Hawkins looks like a high upside recruit. He just started playing football as a junior, and Maxpreps shows only 1 catch this season (an 8-yard TD), though in fairness, I don't think Maxpreps is reporting stats from all the games. As of now, Hawkins looks more like a basketball player than a football player, but he does look to have a good frame to add weight. The offers from a bunch of top SEC and ACC schools speak to the potential, even if the schools making those offers might have reason to be less risk adverse than Stanford. In light of this profile, it's no surprise that ESPN has him as a 4-star and Rivals has him as outside the top 1000, as there will be very different takes, especially if the evaluations are done at different times in the recruiting cycle.

A reminder that the best tight end in San Diego Chargers history played basketball but not football in college (he did play high school football). Not saying we have the college equivalent of Antonio Gates, but he's an intriguing prospect and he reportedly has an offer from Alabama (and Florida).

I'm pleased to see Hawkins in the class, and I don't mind taking some high risk/reward recruits. I note that, with this commitment, Stanford now has 14 commits who received offers by March 15. Bailey and Moi would make 16. It's true that a recruit with an early offer isn't always the coaches' top choice, but the timing of the offer does tend to correlate to the coaches' preference, and the timing of the offer is one of the best easy to track, objective metrics available to those who aren't subscribing to Rivals or 247.
Also, for those keeping track, the Hawkins commitment and public interest from Moi suggest that the June official visits may have been more successful than I previously appreciated. 9 recruits who attended OVs in June have committed and 9 have eliminated Stanford, with only Bailey left to decide. Though I'll admit the losses at WR sting.

Hawkins intriguing commit. as pointed out earlier, this year 1 catch for 8 yards and a TD thru 4 games (and a 2 pt conversion). last year 4 catches for 82 yards and a TD. he is a more accomplished basketball player, but not really the star of his program. Hawkins borderline 4 star on 247 and his offer list is impressive. a good comparison for us might be a Coby Fleener II; Florida probably was hoping for Kyle Pitts II.

CJ Hawkins has no explosiveness and isn't quick or especially fast. He looks like someone who needs to add 70 pounds and be an OT. I mean I wouldn't think he would even project as a DE because he just doesn't have the get off you need in a DL. I'm not understanding why he has offers from the SEC heavies. Maybe they have magic S&C programs that can make guys quicker, faster, and more agile.
His video highlights demonstrate a guy who controls defenders once he gets his hands on them. He is nowhere near a Coby Fleener, let alone Kyle Pitts. I see a blocking TE, not a receiving one.

there's always hope and then the Denny's menu. I'd note that Andrew Luck progressed from a 4.9 40 range in HS to a 4.59 at the NFL combine.

Not likely. I just don't understand why someone with such underwhelming video is so highly sought after. Now, I did see his Junior highlights. Maybe Cj Hawkins has done some more impressive things in camps and really played fantastic as a Senior. This can absolutely happen.
I'm expressing skepticism. Skepticism means needing more information to draw a conclusion. I need more information than that one video I saw demonstrates to understand why he is so coveted as a recruit right now.

If you want to see Hawkins’ athleticism on display, watch his basketball highlights. He’s extremely raw in football and, accordingly, he’s not getting the number of targets or the otherwise prominent role you expect to see from a major conference recruit. And he plays football slow, but he’s not slow. A high school kid who’s 6’7” 220 with a wide and lean frame, can get up and down the court, and dunk on the run effortlessly, is going to get some looks as a football player too, even without a body of football work on film.

He's admitted.
Stanford door #1's guys with Ivy offers somewhat frequently, FWIW. Just because the offer is listed/was given at one point doesn't necessarily mean it's committable anymore from an academic perspective (likely not the case with Hawkins, just speaking generally).

Yeah, almost universally, when we flip a “stealth” (although I maintain “stealth” should refer to offers no one knows about, in practice it has come to mean players who are committed elsewhere who flip to Stanford), that player will wait to announce until they have been admitted. There is no sense in burning a bridge with another school if there is a risk that you won’t get admitted to your next destination. In fact, very frequently, the trigger for a decomitment from elsewhere and commitment to Stanford is the admission news.

I can use stealth to refer to someone who’s stealthy, even if the offer was public. Here, however, Hawkins publicly came for an OV to Stanford after committing to Florida, so that’s not stealthy at all. Just because some of us weren’t in the loop doesn’t mean that the recruit was keeping his Stanford interest secret.

Just on this board, the usage has evolved to anyone who Stanford continues to recruit, even though they are committed to another school. In the past, those recruitments did tend to be much quieter because other schools tended to look unkindly at athletes wavering in their commitment. Now, I think it has become so widespread that nobody looks all that askew at a recruit who is committed to one school but still actively engaging other suitors.
So, by common usage, Haskins was a "stealth" even if his recruitment wasn't all that stealthy.

Supposedly Texas has 90 recruits in attendance at today's OU game. Texas #8 RB is amazing. Stanford has to get better at RB big time. I think Filkins should play more. Get better at OL too.
Plus both OU and UT have transfers playing big roles. Wake up Stanford.

Yes, definitely need the OL to step up. Only upshot is that they are young (mostly sophomores), and will hopefully get better with time. ASU’s line last night was made up of seniors and fifth years, and it showed.

Indeed, Michigan State is 6-0 with 12 (!) starters who are transfers. But how many of them would be admits to Stanford?

Stanford ‘22 safety commit Colin Wright had a 60-yd punt return for a TD and a 40 yard kick return on Friday. This class doesn’t have a ton of speed, but those returns are a good sign. Unlike most football recruits who participate in track during the off-season, Wright is not a sprinter, but he does have a time of 2:09 in the 800, which I think is pretty good. Edit: His hudl film has a bunch of plays where he chases down runners from behind, reminiscent of Devon Carrington’s great play on Marcus Mariotta (though I’m guessing the guys on this hudl video are not Mariotta fast).

Biggins is a UCLA honk. No wonder most of that article is talk about UCLA. There was one tiny sentence about Stanford, so I wonder where you get the idea "Stanford might be the school to best for David Bailey?"
