We may have read the same article, which held (1) he's a Scott Boras client and Boras got Harper 13 years for $330 million, although he did it when Harper was 25 and Bryant is 29. Farhan won't do six years, which would take Bryant to 35. (2) California's taxes are crazy compared with other places and (3) Bryant was much, much better from 2015 through 2019, skidded hard in 2020 and actually did better with the Cubs than with the Giants.

I do have pointed opinions . . . sometimes . . . I'm pretty sure.

My questions are pretty direct/basic.  (Like do you think paying Shaw merely $3-$4M would reveal Stanford as a racist institution?  But that one was directed at you merely for the + comment you gave to original poster who opined that paying Shaw $9M shows that Stanford isn't racist.).

Just switching gears for a second.  Garoppolo was 3 for 3 in the Niners' 19-16 loss to KC tonight with a team-best 102.8 rating.  Trey Lance had a 93.7 rating largely on the strength of a single 80 yard TD pass...otherwise, Lance was 4 for 13 for 48 yards.  And he was sacked 4 times.  Still, three of his 14 passes bounced of the hands of his receivers.  Rosen's rating, not surprisingly, was 55.7 (10 of 15 for 93 yards with an INT and one sack.).  Lance had no rushing yards.  Hasty, Sermon and Lance all fumbled.  I'm guessing Rosen gets cut tomorrow. Woerner, Sherfield, Jennings all had nice catches, so did Perkins. Matthews had a good catch.

As for the rest, I think Richie James gets cut tonight.  Didn't stretch for a pass over the mild, played timid throughout.  Hasty looked good.  Sermon was very marginal.  Niner rookie DBs looked pretty good (Hufanga, Lenoir, Thomas), Niner defense was pretty good, limiting KC Passing to a 76.5 rating.  No sacks, some QB hits.

Finally...I think for the first time, the 49ers have zero Stanford grads on their 90 man roster.

I don’t get what you mean by Bryant doing better with Cubs than Giants.  He’s only been here two weeks…….

First cutdown date is Tuesday (from 90 to 85).  

My sole takeaway from the game :  SF played horribly on special teams.  

Otherwise, it was a typical first preseason game - lots of mistakes by both teams.

I don’t think anyone has a solid grasp on what Zaidi will do.  He plays his cards very close to the vest.  Regarding Bryant specifically, Zaidi has earned the trust of ownership.  Therefore, I see it as baseball decision rather something that is determined strictly by finances.  In other words, if Zaidi believes Bryant can make a difference long term, ownership will support him even if the numbers and term are near the top end of contracts signed by players in his age group.

McGee doesn’t have Kimbrel stuff but he’s what they have. There are about twenty guys in the minors who have closer stuff and a couple, Doval and Castro who will probably be up next year. So McGee is a place holder. Can he be effective and pitch all seven games in a playoff like Darold Knowles? I hope we get a chance to see.

The local press is feeding off the quotes of some defensive 49ers re Lance. He’s 21 and not ready to start. This isn’t Johnnie Unitas, yet.

Right, so he's had 56 plate appearances with the Giants (not including today).  Here's a comparison of his line with each team:

Cubs:    .267/.358/.503/.861, OPS+ is 132
Giants: .294/.357/.451/.808, OPS+ is 117

He is striking out less, that's a good thing.  two stolen bases in his only two attempts, also good.  Scored a higher percentage of runs per game with the Cubs, almost twice as many RBIs per game with the Cubs.  That's what I meant.

Doval has electric stuff.  What concerns me ever so slightly is that his command is actually getting worse year over year (4.6 BB/9 innings in 2016, then 3.6, 4.6, 5.4 and 7.8 in AAA this year).  But he's at 4.3 with the big club, though his WHIP is 1.421.  4 HRs given up in 12 2/3 innings.  Yikes.  I'd really like to see Castro.  6-1 in Sacto, 1.297 WHIP, 50 K's in 37 innings, only 19 walks.

Always liked Knowles.  16 year career, only played in the playoffs for 1/3rd of an inning in 1971, didn't play in the five-game 1973 ALCS at all, then pitched in all 7 games in the 1973 WS.  Williams only pitched his three starters (Blue, Holtzman, Odom and Hunter) and pitched Fingers and Pina from the pen.  Knowles came in during the WS and didn't give up a run in 6 1/3rd.

Interesting counter to the thought that the Giants aren't doing the "little things".  While they may not be manufacturing a lot of runs, it does look like they are also not making a lot of mistakes that let the other teams off the hook.

Farm hitting report:

PCL (I refuse to acknowledge the new designation).
Star is Joe McCarthy 27, OF who will be cheaper than Dickerson. Tearing it up in Sacto. .309 with pop. Also young OF Diego Rincones. Looks like Ramos will start ‘22 in Sacto. Jaylin Davis displaying power but writer thinks he’s an AAAA player due to contact issues.

AA: Will Wilson with a 38% K rate and sinking fast.

A: Tyler Fitzgerald and Sean Roby among the league leaders in batting average, RBI. Luciano having adjustment problems after his promotion.

Low A has two young bombers, Luis Matos and Jairo Pomares. Lots of eager Latin players.

Recent Dodgers pitching depth pick-up, Cole Hamels, is out for the remainder of the season.

While it was unlikely Hamels, who hadn’t pitched this year, would find his old “ace” form in the second half of 2021 the Dodgers threw $1M away for the off chance lightning might strike.

Stats:
Harper... .297, 68 runs, 21 HR, 49RBI... outstanding athlete.

Crawford... .306, 58 runs, 19 HR, 70 RBI... in an era of great shortstops one of the very best.

Way, way down on "experts" list.

I hope your playoff confidence in McGee proves justified.  He was very tidy last night.

P.S.  Agree with Phogge that Crawford isn't getting nearly enough run as potential MVP winner.  Incredible season to date.
