RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - BobK - 11-13-2023

Stanford is up to # 2. Nebraska is # 1
Oregon 6 Washington State 11

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - Softball Fan - 11-13-2023

Malyssa Cawa is libero for Mater Dei High School, ranked #1 in the country.  They are playing tomorrow in the regionals of the California State Championships.   I think next year will be a battle between Cawa and Pringle for primary serving sub/DS.

Back row 2024 Stanford will be ok. At MB Stanford will be very thin; not convinced at the moment Duncan will rise above practice player level. Hoping an elite ACC MB decides the grass is greener on the West Coast and enters the portal after the season. Not much chance of it but today's players seem to migrate to the best teams and Stanford will be one of the best in the ACC.

Michella Chester NCAAVolleyball Power Ten:

"Move over Wisconsin, it's Stanford's turn....Stanford's core is stronger than ever; middles Sami Francis and McKenna Vicini played lights out in both contests this week...Setter Kami Miner remains head-and-shoulders above her competition, averaging 11.42 assists per set...Stanford's looking pretty pristine heading into the final weeks of the regular season."

Wisconsin at #3 but they have to play Nebraska again.  Louisville at #4 but they have to play Pitt and Georgia Tech.

The long-awaited Washington State - Stanford match is now on my Youtube channel.  It is very rough.  When you find obvious mistakes -- audio out of sync with video, for example -- please let me know.  Anyone who has ever worked with video knows that sometimes you get to a point where you just say, "Good enough."

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - Softball Fan - 11-17-2023

Stanford at UCLA tonight 7:00 pm.  Weather-wise it's favorable scheduling to have the last two road games in SoCal.  UCLA is 8-8 in conference and #42 in NCAA RPI so right on the bubble for making the tournament.

If UCLA beats Stanford there's a good chance they make the tournament.  If UCLA loses it will be close.   UCLA has as much at stake in this match as Stanford, possibly more.  If the Cardinal fall asleep during the match UCLA is capable of giving Stanford a rude awakening.   So hopefully get out to a good start tonight and play with confidence.

Current national rankings of Stanford sports reposted on the WVB site.  I'll put this up against any school and it's not even close (13 teams in the top 10).  Other than football and MBB, Stanford continues to be on top of the college sports world.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - mbdude - 11-17-2023

Watson calling game on pac12 TV has his info on players all screwed up! Baird redshirt frosh, Vicini from socal, etc

Ist set loss again, dang, didn't play well

Very slow reacting so far

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - 81alum - 11-17-2023

We had a dominant 2nd set but UCLA leads by 2 at the 3rd set break.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - CompSci87 - 11-17-2023

Stanford pulled out the 3rd set 25-23, now down 4-5 in the 4th.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - Card10Fan - 11-17-2023

No reason we should have lost that 4th set up 24-21 but we fall 27-29. We continue to outhit UCLA but just have many lapses and stretches of poor play.  This should not be going to a fifth set but here we are. Sigh...

Right, not to mention that earlier in the set we were up 6 and gave up a 6-0 UCLA run.  Baird looked tired and they kept going to her.

Service errors and going to the left side exclusively (with Baird gassed, according to the announcers) seemed like a bad strategy.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - Softball Fan - 11-17-2023

Good to see objective observations.  I agree with the three previous posts.

OK.  Stanford up 11-2 in fifth set.  Looking good finally.

Stanford wins 3-2.

Wisconsin lost to Purdue tonight.  If Wisconsin loses to Nebraska next week that will be three losses in three weeks.  There might be some question about them getting a regional seed.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - Softball Fan - 11-17-2023

Here's a point of trivia.  Stanford was up 24-9 in the second set and Hambly issued a challenge.  I would never, ever, ever do that.  Never.  With that score there is virtually a 100% chance Stanford will win the set.  There is not a 100% chance the official will review the call correctly.  Hambly ended up losing the challenge.  He is a fantastic coach but that decision was a head scratcher to me.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - CompSci87 - 11-17-2023

Yes, I thought so too. Waste of a challenge, to my mind.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - johnbar - 11-17-2023

Well, a lot more dramatic than it should have been.
But Stanford now guaranteed at least a share of the Pac-12 championship.  They can clinch outright on Sunday at USC.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - 76lsjumb - 11-17-2023

Reading the posts this evening has certainly convinced me that we are the worst, most poorly coached, #2 nationally ranked, Conference champion team in  the country…  :-)

I expected that sentiment from you and you are certainty entitled to it.  From my perspective you seem to have an inability to evaluate team performance objectively.  Did you hear the announcer say in the fourth set you have the #2 ranked team and an unranked team looking the same?   Not sure where you get "worst, most poorly coached" team.  I don't see that extreme anywhere in this entire thread.

Sorry. Next time I’ll try to make the smiley face a little bigger.  I’m just thinking that the Board has a tendency to be a little overly critical and, for lack of a better term, nit picky. Does the team sometimes seem to lose focus? Absolutely. But tonight, it seemed to me that the big story was a nine point run to open Set 5.
The Board is a tough crowd. I get it. I was just trying to add a little levity after what seemed to me a pretty good win over a very motivated (even if unranked) team that was playing pretty well overall.
As for objectivity, you’re probably 100% correct. I’m a big fan of the WVB team (and have been since my wife and I ran the QuickSet Club for a few years and saw our first title match in Albuquerque). I also think Hambly is a very good and personable coach (and, more specifically relevant to this thread, has a remarkably good record in challenges). So, yes, I readily confess that I am very likely to be an unobjective fan of both the team and Hambly. Apologies if that is upsetting…

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - BobK - 11-18-2023

I’m a long time season ticket holder. Yes we should have won in 4 but we won. While hard on the fans to go 5 or even 4 it’s maybe best for the team to play and win the tough ones. It can and I hope will make us tougher in December

So late 4th set we have 23 lead by 3 and lose. Yes bad very bad. Then Come out go 8-0 in the 5th set. That was awesome
Plus how about Vicini ? What a great match by her

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - Card10Fan - 11-18-2023

When watching games - I have moments where I  think wow we might seriously win the whole thing this year. Then in the next set I’m
thinking gosh, we might get upset in the first or second round. I still think that to be the case. I think we’re poised to make a deep run but an early loss would not surprise me either.
