If the offense wants to call a hurry-up for strategic reasons, the signal would come in from the sidelines. It wouldn’t be a WR making the decision.

The game was over when Purdy went out in the 1Q. The officiating had absolutely no bearing on the outcome of the game. If you can’t overcome a blown call, you don’t deserve to win.
The Niners had a lot go their way during the second half of the season. It is unfortunate all the bad luck they avoided in that time frame had to happen in the first half of today’s game but c’est la vie, that is sports. You gotta take the bad with the good.
Lastly, when the history of this season is written, it will read Shanhan’s best season as the Niner coach and that SF may finally have found a QB who can lead them to their first Super Bowl win since Steve Young.

That said, Shanahan clearly should have prepared his team for the possibility that they'd have nobody who could pass the ball. McDaniel would have prepped for that. Allegedly, being a QB is easy, all you need to do is count defenders on one side of the ball.
The giveaway was Adams signaling for a quick snap. Why do that after a long reception if it was a clean catch? Wouldn’t you want to give yourself and the linemen a chance to catch your breath after sprinting 30+ yards and have some time on the goal line play? Should have thrown the challenge flag on a hunch.
And Shanahan definitively saw that how? That's what the upstairs coaches are for, isn't it?
I didn’t say Shanghai should have noticed that. But the TV clearly showed Adams’ gesture. Somebody in the booth should have picked up on that and called down.
Perhaps I wasn't clear enough, but that was exactly my point. Someone upstairs/in the booth should have called down. Then again, with the "replay assist", a camera angle was clearly missed/ignored.
If only we had someone on this board with experience and expertise in NFL camerawork and broadcasts who could give us some insights as to why that angle wasn't seen. . . .
Question is time. I realize this is hindsight. Just calling a time out there would’ve made sense. Then you could look at it and throw the flag.

At least one of the conference championship games lived up to what it as suppose to be today.
Bengals - Chiefs is really some compelling drama, but man the injuries have such a gigantic impact on the game.

The Chiefs seemed to celebrate x-rays were negative, but confirmed he has a high ankle sprain, so not exactly a good thing. Trent Williams tried to play with a high ankle sprain in last year's NFC CG after suffering it the week before and said he regretted doing so, adding it took a month for it to heal after that game.
Mahomes will not be able to walk today and though staying off it for 7 days will allow swelling to subside, the ankle will not be healed and as soon as he starts running around, he will be limping again, unable to protect himself, unable to throw the ball as accurately as he must to win in the next two rounds. Sure, they can tape the ankle and shoot it up with whoever knows what pain killer, but he's going to be limited and more susceptible to worsening the current injury or sustaining another one. So what do the Chiefs want? Mahomes to be limited and get more damaged in the AFC CG, so he has no chance of playing in the Super Bowl? Or, do they want to let him rest for three weeks so if they make the Super Bowl, with their backup QB, he can play in it and be a lot more capable than he will be in an AFC CG?
The Chiefs are on the horns of quite a dilemma, and they will only make it worse by allowing Mahomes to have any say in whether he plays in the AFC CG. It should be 100% up to the doctors and medical people. Mahomes can't be trusted to make the best decision for himself or his team. He thinks he's Superman; thought he should continue playing on one leg and thinks he'll be OK to go in a week - crazy. It appears Mahomes overruled Chiefs medical personnel against the Jags. I mean what doctor would have seen him hobbling out there and not pulled him off the field if it was really their decision? As it was, the Chiefs were lucky the Jags were too inept to take advantage of getting to play them with such a compromised Mahomes. They won't be that lucky against Cincy or Buffalo.

And just for kicks - if that call isn’t blown, Niners have ball on 40. The play Purdy gets hurt doesn’t happen. (I know, silly argument. But I can’t help myself…..).

Given that they again tried to block Reddick with a TE even after Purdy was hurt on a play where they tried to block him with a TE, probably.

No QB
11 Penalties
3 turnovers.
I'm surprised it was as close as it was.
Question - Is roughing the passer a reviewable call? Bad call in my opinion. Overall, the officiating sucked, and not just because of my 49er bias.

Agree. But it doesn’t change what a poor half he had. Part of the problem relating to the quarterback injuries is the Eagles have consistently had somebody running free at the quarterback. Which is a blocking scheme issue.
Course they also have had no help from the referees. Johnson, for example, got hit on the head. No call. McCaffrey got hit late. No call. Meanwhile Jimmie Ward brushes a guy on a third down and 10 and they get the penalty call.
Then there's getting blocked into the kicker.
The NFL has spoken.
I had the same thought. It sure looked like he was pushed into the kicker.
That being said, a few blown calls aren’t the difference here.
BC
When those blown calls result in extending a drive that was otherwise stopped, I respectfully disagree. Niners committed enough stupid penalties on their own, but the refs had an impact on the final score. Perhaps not the outcome, but for sure the final score.

Jed York might want to think about creating some consequences for the Head Coach losing so many QBs to injury. Shanahan has to put a lot more emphasis on protecting them, obviously, because he clearly is not doing a good job in that department. It's not some crazy anomaly that they are getting hurt so frequently and severely. The way they are being taught and employed is leading to a higher frequency of significant injury than any other team.

So, to back up that statement please let us know what every NFL team is doing to protect its quarterback. Please give us specifics. Blocking schemes. Conditioning. QB coaching methods and techniques . Discussions between coaches and QB. Trainers methods. Strength and condition. Etc.
I look forward to this. Because when you make a blanket statement like that, I’m sure that you have the facts to back it up. Can’t wait. This is going to be illuminating.
While I wait for your factual support, I’ll lay out the injuries:
Garrapolo:
2018 -Torn ACL. Week 3. Scrambled. Near sideline, tried to get a couple extra yards. Got hit awkwardly.
2020 -Week 2 High ankle sprain. Was in pocket. Defender landed on his plant leg. Game was played at Jets. New artificial turf. Niners had a bunch of leg injuries that day.
Week 8- reinjured ankle. I’ll see if I can find details.
2021 - Calf. Week 4 Not actually sure how it happened. Thinks he got stepped on.
Week 16 Thumb fracture. Sacked. Landed on thimb.
Shoulder sprain in playoffs.
2022. 12-4-22. Broken foot. Scrambled, defender landed with full weight on his foot.
Lance 2022. I didn’t see this. But my understanding is he was running up the middle got hit and broke his foot. Designed run.
Purdy - hit on arm as he’s throwing.
My first question – where is the commonality on these injuries? JG got hurt in several different ways.
Lance - You can argue that you should not have a quarterback running up the middle. But I’ll respond with the fact that all running quarterbacks do that. Jackson, Hurts , Allen , Fields. One of the key elements of Lance’s game is running the football. That’s a risk of a running quarterback. As evidenced by the fact that every single one of those quarterbacks, except Allen got hurt this year.
Purdy was simply a fluke. Got hit in an area where quarterbacks usually don’t. When his arm was in a vulnerable position. In fact, I would not be surprised if there’s a rule that’s put in place next year to make that kind of hit illegal.
49ers throw the ball less than most teams. (Which in and of itself lowers injury opportunity for QB). I was, am, critical of the blocking scheme on the Purdy injury. (Shanahan explained that it was play action pass which is designed for TE to make the block. He whiffed.I’ve also seen some other analysts indicate that Purdy should’ve stepped up and didn’t.) But that is a far cry from saying there’s something systemic that leads to more QB injuries. The fact of the matter is, they’ve primarily had one quarterback – Garoppolo – who, for one reason or another is injury prone.
Also, Shanahan ran this system in Atlanta as offensive coordinator. I don’t remember Ryan getting hurt.
So, again - specific facts. Because that’s a rather serious accusation.

Yup. Will need surgery. Here’s hoping it’s a repair and not a full tommy John reconstruction, with a repair reportedly he’ll be back for training camp. He didn’t have a ton of spare arm strength to loose though, hope he’ll be back to full strength.
Also this is ridiculous to pin on Shanahan. QBs take hits. They usually don’t get hurt. Sometimes they do. Brock took fewer hits then most due to mobility and a run heavy scheme.
I’d like to see is improve on the OL, especially replacing Mclinchey with a better pass blocking RT. If TB12 is willing to come on a reasonable deal let’s bring him in, as this year showed you can’t have too many QBs. Rogers is too expensive.
