Were you referring to Q3 9:25?  That's an elbow by the USC player Akunwafo swinging it up into Betts's chin and then down again.
Unless you were making some kind of joke I don't understand, I can't see how you thought it was hair.  The hair moved slower than the rotation; the elbow was faster.

The time sounds about right. I wasn't joking--I watched that at least 20 times trying to see the foul. I had assumed it was an elbow, but never saw it actually hit Bett's chin, just her chest. Odd, though, since an elbow to the chin would be disqualifying yet Akunwafo wasn't disqualified.

Same. It's definitely their achilles heel. If we thought Jump didn't get enuf shots up last year because of aggressive guarding, this year she is pretty much stuck. Even when there is a quick opening, she seems to hesitate more often and then doesn't let it fly. She's definitely extended her game with  left hand layups, e.g. but her 3 pointer is a 100% necessity against better teams. Bosgana is inconsistent, in effort, correct defensive position, and shooting. If she has a good game, we win, if not, maybe not. Harriel's effort and threes are a great addition this year, but she is not yet as physically strong as others, and needs to eliminate the high school layups. Ogden looks like a player, but has been unavailable, and I assume that means for practice also. She may be a big part of the answer, but we dunno yet. Clardy is impressive on d, but turnovers at the pg position are clearly a problem. Utah, and especially Colo, guarded Lepolo more closely than other teams have which slowed down her 3 pt shot. She doesn't have a jumper out there. It's a set shot and she's not 6'2". So, what to do. Seems like the answer lies in setting more screens for Jump (where is the elevator door screen, e.g.), Jump letting the ball fly, good health for Ogden, and Lepolo to keep practicing and letting it fly.

Except when Kiana was here and the Orrange/Thompson couple years, even when we were FF-worthy national contenders, our (relative) weakness has always been our guards, especially speedy, versatile guards who can both drive and shoot the three with reliability. While she did have a lot of help alongside her, having Kiana be able to create something on her own while the clock was winding down was a nice insurance measure during our championship run.

While our current guards are solid, they are not there offensively, it's usually been a work in progress. It would have been nice to have gotten a college-ready guard that we missed out on (Miles, Citron, Hidalgo, Rice, Watkins). Having any one of them would have given us a consistent offensive threat from the 1 or 2 that would have complemented Brink and Kiki inside.

I meant in the last 15ish years, my main point is that in recent history, the common thread even in our national title contending teams (most of the time) is that lack of a scoring guard threat.

They weren't really ball handlers who brought the ball up the court. Karlie was a phenomenal three point shooter but she wasn't much of an attacker off the bounce. Conversely, McPhee's 3-pt shooting was pretty streaky and Lexie always seemed better off a set play rather than creating something on her own.

They were all pretty good at ball handling and creating their own shots.

But you are correct that there is no one on the team now with a similar profile. Basically, I think we are talking about a women's team version of Kanaan Carlyle.

However I don't think that players like Hidalgo and Watkins would have been good fits at Stanford. Stanford is just not a place where guards typically are shooting 18-20 or more times a game as those 2 players are. I do agree that Rice could have been a nice complement to Brink and Iriafen.

RE: WBB 2023-2024 Season - qwerty49 - 01-18-2024

I always thought Jeanette Pohlen was one of our best. She could shoot, and as Xavier found out, could handle the ball too.

I think TVD does a nice job of adapting the offense to the personnel. I think the reality is we don’t have the “perfect” combination of skill sets in the backcourt (yet) this season. But let’s see how things unfold over the next couple of months.  I think our ceiling is Elite Eight but of course I hope I’m way wrong.

Yet another top 5 upset - Miami just took down NC State 73-59.  Zero points off the bench for NC State.

I agree with this - we don't seem to have a guard or wing that can reliably create their own shot off the dribble and drive to the basket. All four of the players above could do that.

I don't think Tara would allow Watkins to take the ball as much as Lindsey Gottlieb does...the only Stanford player that comes close to having the ball that much was Haley Jones.

And if I could have either Lauren Betts or Kiki Rice on the current Stanford team, I'd take Rice without a doubt.

RE: WBB 2023-2024 Season - Card10Fan - 01-19-2024

Will be interesting to see how UCLA/USC do at Utah and Colorado this weekend. Some type of split from everyone and we can move up in the rankings and standings. Colorado is coming off a win over us last weekend and UCLA a disappointing loss to USC. Who's gonna have the upper hand?

RE: WBB 2023-2024 Season - WBB fan - 01-19-2024

I expected to see something in the SF Chron this morning, but not on the front page, but there it is, front page of the paper, above the fold, the banner Friday morning article. Here it is, the hype continues. I hope we have a great crowd tonight!  As for content, more of the themes and threads we've been seeing this week.

https://www.sfchronicle.com/sports/college/article/stanford-s-tara-vanderveer-changed-basketball-18612237.php

Article does have one significant goof in it -- says Tara has had three national players of the year: Azzi, Starbird, and Haley Jones. Nope! It is Azzi, Starbird, and Wiggins

RE: WBB 2023-2024 Season - TheWildJacko - 01-19-2024

I think Hidalgo and/or Watkins would have fit fine at Stanford. Players that good generally find a way to fit in, and along with Cam, Hannah and Kiki, we’d be pretty near unstoppable. Sure, they probably wouldn’t be shooting as much, but they also wouldn’t have to. Think back to our team with Candice Wiggins, Jayne Appel, Kayla Pederson, Jillian Harmon & J.J. Hones et al.—they didn’t have much trouble gelling even with high talent at every position.

I wanted both to lose. But toward the end when they blew that whistle as Clark leaned back into her defender, I thought Cam gets whisled for that all the time... Different refs, or different rules?
