Oops, my misteak, Leftcoast. I didn't see it and you were right about Dave Stewart, Dwight Gooden, CC Sabathia and Dontrelle Willis. DR citizens Marichal and Pedro didn't fit Mudcat Grant's definition, so they were excluded.

Most oddball trade. The slang is "I'd trade (underperforming player) for a bag of potato chips/some baseball bats/other inanimate object)."
Here's a few oddball trades:
- Future HoF pitcher Lefty Grove was traded for an outfield fence when he was 20 years old. A storm destroyed an outfield fence, so the Martinsburg Mountaineers traded Grove for a repaired fence (would have cost $3,500 to fix).
- Catcher Cliff Dapper (17 MLB ABs) was traded by the Dodgers for Ernie Harwell, the broadcaster.
- Blue Moon Odom was traded from the Calgary Vipers in 2008 to the Laredo Broncos for 10 Prairie Sticks Maple Bats (24-inch). They auctioned the bats off for charity for $10,000.
- When 42 year old Dave Winfield was traded by the Twins to the Indians for a player to be named later, Winfield never actually played (because of the 1994 players strike)...so to settle the transaction, the Cleveland executives picked up a $100 dinner tab.
- Tim Fortugno was traded by the Brewers to the Angles for 12 dozen baseballs (worth $25k). He pitched 14 games for the Angels, then 25 for the Reds and 37 for the White Sox.
And here's my favorite...Jack Fenton, born in Oakland and attended Oakland Tech, played for the Oakland Oaks for six seasons, then was (conventionally) traded to Portland for a season, then to Atlanta and Memphis. Memphis then traded Fenton to the San Francisco Seals for a bag of prunes. Highly valued are prunes in Memphis, TN, no doubt. Charlie Graham (former SCU catcher) was in charge of business for the Seals in the Great Depression, and had to make ends meet any way possible. Hence, the prunes for Fenton trade.
Here's the funny part. Fenton'd hit .280 in the South in A Ball as a bench warmer, playing just 68 games between the two teams, after 175 games for Portland. But in two seasons in San Francisco, Fenton batted .305 with 351 hits, 52 doubles, six triples and 10 home runs. It was a good team with 19 year old Joe Dimaggio and 12 other players who reached the majors. Fenton had the second most HRs on the team behind DiMaggio.

Washington - he had a great arm (threw a silver dollar across the Rappahannock River). Based on that, he could have been a great MLB pitcher. ;)

Those are two of the four I would think of. Ford and UMich were undefeated in 1932 and 1933 and Ford was the star. Both the Packers and the Bears wanted Gerald Ford in 1935, but he made it clear he wasn't going to be a pro. He was probably the best pure athlete.
Three interesting points on Washington: 1) What occasioned this question is that I read that Washington and his aide-de-camp used to play catch regularly during the Revolutionary War. Washington had 32 aides de camps, so I don't know which one. 2) Washington and his army played rounders, the forerunner of baseball. 3) At one point, Washington orders two of his men to throw a rock up onto a high plateau. The two men argued about which were going to do it, Washington gets frustrated and says "fine, I'll do it", gets off his horse, and throws a rock very high on a plateau.
The other three I had in mind are Dwight Eisenhower (played football at West Point, started at LB, tackled Jim Thorpe, didn't make the baseball team, played a lot of golf), George H. W. Bush (played baseball at Yale) and Lincoln, who was apparently a champion wrestler, losing only one out of 200+ matches. Also a great handball player and also a very good baseball player.
Roosevelt (Teddy) was a superb horseman. He participated in crew and boxing at Hahvahd and FDR rowed crew at Harvard and was a serious swimmer and sailor. Taft wrestled at Yale. Woodrow Wilson was a centerfielder at Davidson, but didn't play when he transferred to Princeton. Reagan played football and was captain of the swim team at Eureka College and called Cubs games on the radio when he graduated.

While I was out, last week the Chargers scored three points against the Broncos using the rarely used fair-catch kick rule, whereupon they scored a field goal on an untimed down.
The trivia question: the last time that an NFL team scored on a fair-catch kick was in 1976. What team scored, and who was the kicker?

Roki Sasaki, 23-year old phenom pitcher recently "posted" to join MLB and has captured the attention of all MLB teams.
It may be that Sasaki's comfort level would be assuaged by the presence of a local "Japantown", the formal term for substantial communities of the Japanese diaspora outside of Japan.
Three questions:
What was the peak number of Japantowns in California?
How many formal Japantowns are left in America?
In which cities are they located?

At one time, there were 43 Japantowns, mainly in California. Today, there are just four. Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose and Seattle.

I had missed the thread from 82lsju, but the answer is in there. Before last week, the last successful fair-catch kick was also by a Charger, Ray Wersching, back in 1976.
