I think part of it with Crawford is “disbelief “. There is no way you can compare Harper and Crawford at this juncture and say Harper is more valuable.
Giants/Niners 2021 thread - Leftcoast - 08-17-2021
I can't speak for others but arguments over playoff rosters and deep dives in the post-season as the measure of 2021 success feel like expectation drift and goal post moving.
The Giants 2021 season has been the most fun since the surprising (and tortuous!) 2012 World series. The Giants have far exceeded my pre-season expectations, think of of 2021 as a satisfying steak meal we are already enjoying. A deep playoff push would be a post-meal ice cream sundae with whipped cream, and a World Series appearance the cherry on top.
I LIKE ice cream so bring back that whole 2012 sundae but should the team lose in the first round I'm still satisfied with my regular season steak. Why wouldn't I be? I was expecting 2021 to be a cold fast food burger.
Take a deep breath, Go Giants and enjoy the pennant race.

Most interesting season since 1959. Big league baseball was new then and the Giants were involved in a pennant race with the Dodgers and Braves. No divisional playoff, no NLCS. Just tension from April to October and one spot in the WS. Spahn, Aaron, Matthews, Musial, Banks, Ashburn, Snider, many others in the Hall paraded at the little ballpark on 16th and Bryant. No megalomaniac stadium where you couldn't smell beer being brewed, bread being made and Folgers being roasted. No season since was like it.
You had to be there.

You guys whiffed on the highest season batting average. Gary Redus, Billings of the Pioneer League 1978... .462, minimum 200 at bats. I don't know if Roy Hobbs hit any higher for the NL Knights.

…and Roberto Clemente playing right field like a maestro. Watching him was a privilege that I’ll never forget.

If Crawford hits .270 for the season - that would be a good batting average for him. If he hits zero more HRs, his current total of 19 (?) would be a good season for him. But if he does have that good average and good power season, it means he will have gone on a power outage and dropped thirty percentage points in the last 41 games. That would not bode well. You can do same exercise for Belt and Posey. You get the idea.
As for the Giants, I have believed, for 2H anyway, that their problems are (a) no ace starter (for must-win game, including WC playoff), and (b) no closer. I agree that overall the pitching has been good. But when playoffs come around, "good" likely won't cut it.
Finally, I do want to acknowledge that this year has been one of the most enjoyable Giants seasons in memory. The team has played so well and has had so many incredible Ws (and a couple painful Ls) that as fans we're playing a bit with House Money. Still, given how well they've played to date, it would absolutely SUCK for this team to NOT play a full playoff series. That's sort of my main concern now . . . trying to fend off the Dodgers. (I wish there were 14 games remaining, instead of 41).

Most of Kaplers moves work. But I think he needs to stretch his pen. Some guys can go two innings. If so rest them the next day. He did it successfully with Littel the other day. Why not keep a guy in if he’s effective?
They need to bring up two pitchers. Probably Long and Doval. Perhaps try Doval out in a high pressure spot. McGee has not been lights out but overall pretty good. I would hate to see them go to a bullpen game in a wild card.

McGee was the relief pitcher of the month in July. But in keeping with the motto of many he’s given up 7 runs last 5 innings. Still that base hit yesterday if 5 feet to the right a double play.
Post game they mentioned Rogers hurt but today no mention

The real prospect... Jairo Pomares promoted from SJose Low A to Eugene High A. Fantastic numbers. Part of the same International draftee group as Luciano and Matos. Giants lower minors loaded with speed and power. Somebody is going a great scouting job in the Latin area.

There are others to pick up slack offensively. Yaz, for example. Not saying he will get hot, but he’s certainly capable of doing so. Same thing with Dickerson who is very streaky. He’s shown some signs lately. So I just don’t think offense is going to be the issue.
Giants 9-2 over last 11. During which they dropped a game to the Dodgers. Next 19: 9 on road (A’s, Mets, Braves). Home for seven (4 Brewers, 3 Dodgers). Then to Colorado for three. All at a time when their starting staff is iffy at best. If they can get through this at or very near the lead, they can win the division. But it’s not beyond the realm of reason that they are 5 back after these 19. They have yet to have a truly bad stretch. And these 19 coming up are brutal.
I don’t see the Dodgers having any kind of bad run from here to the end of the season. Giants could play 600 ball from here on out and finish second. Not a whole lot they can do about that.

Unfortunately, I agree. I swear . . . it wouldn't surprise me if Dodgers win 80% of their remaining games.
P.S. Terry, are you implying "juice" for Crawford? He looks the same physically, so I attribute it to better approach at the plate (and season not over yet). We'll see what numbers are after 41 more games.

Here's a stat for you...the 34-year old Crawford leads the starters with nine stolen bases and no caught stealing (Slater has 10). He has 70 RBI...Yaz has the next most with 47. He has the most runs (58), most hits (104), most HRs (19) and second-most doubles and triples. He's a very good shortstop, #5 in assists in the NL, currently fielding .981 which is third best of his career, behind the .983 and .982 in his 2nd and 3rd gold glove years, 2017 and 2017. But he's definitely lost a step defensively, now his range factor is only slightly above average, whereas he used to be considerably above average -- even last year, he averaged nearly 1/2 chance per game more than average shortstops.
I don't know about MVP, but I think he'll finish in the top five in voting. In 2016, he finished 12th, his only time in the Top 20 in MVP voting.
And Posey...he's having the best year of his career outside of his MVP season with an OPS+ of 155 (versus career average of 129). Posey has 44.2 career WAR, will be 46 by the end of this season and at least 48 by the end of next season. Only 12 catchers have WAR over 48, and 11 are in the Hall. The 12th is Joe Mauer, who moved off the catcher position. Posey has WAR figures better than HoFers Bresnahan, Lombardi, Campanella, Ferrell, and Schalk. I think he needs two more excellent seasons including this one. If they get a WS win this year, I think Posey sews it up.
BTW...Alex Wood is pitching tonight. He's 10-3. The Giants are currently 12-0 in games he's started after a loss -- and hopefully 13-0 after tonight.

The Dodgers are 2.5 games back; have won 9 of the last 10; and seven in a row.
The Dodgers have 40 games left.
30 of 40 - 75% - almost seems like a gimme the way they've been playing (and I previously said I wouldn't be shocked if they won 80% a couple games ago, which would be 33 or 34 of last 42).
Bottom line: fending of the Dodgers the last 1+ month will be very difficult.

Perhaps his second best hitting season, but by WAR and WAA it will be his eighth best season when all is said and done. There is more to the game than hitting; even if you don't subscribe to WAR/WAA he is playing less than in his prime seasons and the non-hitting facets of his game have all declined. Nevertheless it's wonderful to see him healthy again and playing this well.
