To your question, the 1973 Mets were 58-70 on May 22, they finished 24-9 to go 82-79, beat the Reds in the NLCS, then lost the WS to the A's. Like the Giants, they had terrific pitching; Seaver, Koosman, Matlack, George Stone (12-3, 2.80 ERA) and closer Tug McGraw. Mets had a 3.26 ERA, 3rd best in the NL. And like the 2024 Giants, they were a terrible hitting team, between 8th and 12th (in a 12 team league) in BA, OBP, SLG, OPS. In fact, the only category they led the league was Caught Stealing...like the Giants. They were 11th in stolen bases.
The Astros were 15-30 on May 24, 2005. They finished 89-73, won the NLDS over the Braves, the NLCS over the Cardinals and lost the WS to the White Sox.
Closer to home, the 2008 Dodgers were 46-49 at the ASB, finished 84-78 (finished first in the NL West, beat the Cubs in the NLDS, lost the NLCS to the Phillies)
Separately, not sub-.500, but on August 11, 1951, the Giants were 13 games behind the Dodgers, then won 16 in a row -- every single win was by three or fewer runs -- after which they were five back.

At the end of the season, they won 12 of 13 to tie the Dodgers, then took 2 of 3 (3-1, 0-10, 5-4), culminating in the Shot Heard Round the World.

Never in a full season. In shortened seasons with different rules governing which teams qualified (1981 due to a players strike and 2020 due to the pandemic), it has happened three times.

2005 Padres were 82-80 and won the very bad NL West that year on the back of Jake Peavy and not much else. They actually gave up more runs than they scored in the regular season and were swept in the NLDS.
The next year, the Cardinals went 83-78 and won the NL Central despite almost blowing the playoff spot with a seven game losing streak down the stretch. The team went on to win the World Series. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Right, of course. No team finished the regular season with a sub-.500 record and made the playoffs, the Mets at 82-79 were the closest.
During the COVID 60 game season in 2020, both the Brewers and the Astros finished 29-31 in an expanded playoffs featuring 16 of the 30 MLB teams. The Brewers lost, two games to zero, in the WC series to the Dodgers. The Astros did surprisingly well, winning the wild card (2-0) over the Twins, then the ALDS over the A's (3-1), losing in the ALCS to the Rays (4-3).

Great Story in the Athletic. My athletic “heroes” has a boy were Willie Mays, Rick Barry. And Jim Plunkett.
When Barry was a kid, he lived in New Jersey. Took a day off school went to a Giants game at the Polo Grounds. And as the game ended, he jumped on the field, ran out to centerfield and shook Willie’s hand. Mays was his Sports hero. The reason he wore 24.
They got to know each other when Barry came to San Francisco and became friends. In fact, Barry came to Willies 70th birthday party and Willie insisted that he not only speak, but he give the first talk and tell the story of how they met. Barry was nervous. Not a usual occurrence. He certainly wasn’t shy to talk. But this is Willie. So he started off by saying “I know most of you are wondering what the hell am I doing here.” And than he went on to tell the story. The crowd loved it.

In late 1974, my stepmother flew back from Phoenix to SF, and we met her at the gate. This was back when you didn't need a ticket to enter the airport, and back when the NBA teams flew commercial. She was on the plane with the entire Warriors team, Cliff Ray, Phil Smith, CJ, etc...and Rick Barry walked off, wearing a rabbit fur coat that was, let's just say the height of 1970s fashion. Barry and the entire team gathered around a monitor (another NBA team was playing). I was 12, and I asked for his autograph, which he gave me not once removing his eyes from the video screen. I'm not an autograph seeker by nature, but I still have that one.
Supposedly the Yankees are pursuing Camilo Doval. I say, let him go for someone good.
Doval has saved 17 games in 21 opportunities for San Francisco this season. However, it’s been accompanied by a 4.38 ERA and 1.62 WHIP in 37 innings. That pales in comparison to what he’s done to start his career from 2021-23. Across his first 162.1 innings, Doval has saved 69 games while posting a 2.77 ERA and 1.16 WHIP with 204 strikeouts.

Agree, Bob. Only Judge for Duval :). ERA is inflated by couple of non-save appearance. I agree he hasn't been as dominating as last year, but he is still one of the best in the game.

Giants drop the first two out of the break. Against the woeful Rockies. Bullpen blows a great start by Harrison yesterday. Webb gives up four tonight. Three runs a night is not going to get it done at Coors. Birdsong tomorrow. Need a win, or the fat lady will be warming up. . . .

Current win percentage extrapolates to 77 wins.
We better turn it around fast, particularly with the easiest remaining schedule in MLB.

I went back to take a look at our pre-season comments. I think both of us (predicting 75 wins prior to the addition of Chapman/Snell) were a lot more accurate in February than our late pre-season calls (see below).
This makes two years in a row that Zaidi has selected names instead of players. The only good news is that now he probably will be unwilling to sell the future at the deadline to chase ghosts this season.

All they have to do is go 45-20 over their remaining 65 games to get to 92 wins. Piece o'cake. They have four games at Dodger stadium coming up, after that, easy schedule the rest of the way (sarcasm 5-alarm).

You were thinking Lee wouldn't hit a wall. That Chapman and Soler were two nice bats (never mind that Chapman has only hit over .240 twice in his career and strikes out a ton, and that Soler's ops wouldn't be 100 points below his career average). That Snell would have been effective in more than one outing. That the young pitching staff would develop nicely and not get hurt. That Luciano was the SS of the future. That Doval wouldn't be in meltdown mode. That Melvin was a players manager who could get the best out of his team, and not have them make fundamental errors in the field and on the base paths.
That said, with the calvary coming, maybe they can salvage one at Coors and sweep the Dodgers, then just like that, they'd be back to 500. . . .

They did salvage one at Coors today, 3-2. 22-year old Hayden Birdsong was a revelation, striking out 12 in six innings. Soler hit a 478-foot HR, longest in MLB this year. Fitzpatrick also had an HR. Walker, Rogers had a hold; Doval had a nice save, his 18th.
