Two points, really:
1) The Giants might be turning the corner a bit on strikeouts. Their last six games they averaged 7 2/3rds strikeouts per game. The first six games of the season, they averaged 12 strikeouts per game. So they've cut it by about a third.
2) Crawford has lost what little remains of his skills and capabilities. And we can't get too excited about Casey Schmitt who won't bat .667 forever.
F that! I'm excited! Casey Schmitt is the most promising position player prospect the Giants have produced since I would say Buster Posey. He's got more upside than Crawford had because he's a better hitter and overall athlete with on par defense.
Marco Luciano is hitting .120 in Richmond. I can and will be excited about Casey Schmitt!!! Else, what do I have?
Too true. Casey Schmitt is 2 for 3 tonight with a double. Slash line is .482/.482/.852/1.333.

Well, he does tend to swing and miss any pitch out of the strike zone so far, but yes, he looks like he real deal. He hits the ball harrrd.

28 plate appearances, no walks, four strikeouts. Also two home runs, four doubles. OPS+ of 246. STUD.

Interesting stat re: the impact of “no shift” in baseball…
Left-handed hitters on pulled ground balls versus Kevin Gausman:
2023: 6 for 13 .462 average
2022: 4 for 29 .138 average
Just one example of the difference that rule change has had on the game…..

First sweep of the year. All without an HR. Lot of good 2 out opposite field hitting with RISP.
Speaking of the Farm, BobK and perhaps others: I suspect you saw Wade Meckler at OSU. He is killing it in the minors. Played Rookie and Low A last year hit over .400
Started at Eugene this year - hitting .450. So the called him up to Richmond.
Can any of you give a scouting report? He can hit doesn’t count. :)

I remember Meckler at Oregon State. He is a contact hitter with not a lot of power or speed. He draws more walks than he strikes out. If you want someone to get on base, Meckler is your guy.

Vaun Brown also is playing again. Looks to be working his way back to Richmond after stints in SJ and Eugene. I was more intrigued with him than any other prospect including Schmitt. Could we see Brown and Matos in the Giants outfield as fixtures by season’s end?

Brown has a long road ahead before he can make it to the bigs. He is a 25 year old (next month) who has dominated leagues mostly populated by younger players. He will need to prove that he can play effectively against older competition before any further advances in his career. Maybe by late ‘24? Time will tell…
Matos is getting closer. A successful full season at Sac. would definitely put him back on the radar for consideration in ‘24.
In the meantime, the Giants are well-stocked with OFs.

Giants Rtot is now 5th worst in all of MLB. I believe they were 2nd worst when Schmitt joined.
Giants have had two errors in the nine games since Schmitt joined, and 26 errors in the other 34 games.
Giants have had eight double plays in the nine games since Schmitt joined, and 35 in the other 34 games...so actually, very slightly fewer DPs on average since Schmitt joined. SFG, in fact, have the third most DPs in MLB this year.

Kind of shocked Brandon Belt hasn't put together a great start to the year in this new environment. But he's also the streakiest hitter I've ever seen so if this is his new "down" then the Blue Jays really got one.

I don’t think Bailey will stick with the Giants for too long. Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see how he does for however long he is in SF.

I don't. It's possible they are going to try Bailey as an every three day catcher for a bit. I think it possible that they have decided Sabol is good enuf in lf that he can play there vs rhp. After a slow start, he is hitting .280, and he hits the ball hard. I also think he gives up too much behind the plate to be the second catcher. Bart gets hurt alot and I wouldn't want to see Sabol try to cover that.

No, he is their catcher of the future. They don’t have a lot of options in Sac and so essentially, why not? I think the Giants ultimate hope is by ‘24 Bailey and Bart in a platoon. Bailey vs RH. Sabol to OF.
Bailey switch hits but struggles mightily hitting right handed. So, more likely he sees duty vs righthanders.

A bit of a misunderstanding…
I meant that he will return to Sac once Bart is healthy. Bailey is absolutely in the Giants long term plans. As I have said before, I think he will be the opening day catcher in 2024.

Bailey caught the ninth, looked pretty good. Haniger 2/4, Giants win 4-3, Rogers got 2nd save, Scott Alexander got the win, 4-0 record. Giants are 21-23.
