RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball 2024 - BostonCard - 11-27-2024

Play is confirmed.  Stanford wins in five.  Georgia Tech had two match points in the third set, and we just came back, beat them handily in the fourth and never trailed in the fifth.

Kurt had a monster game; 20 kills and .381 hitting.  Rubin (14 kills and 10 digs) and Francis (11 kills, 11 blocks) each had double-doubles.  After 6 service errors in the first set, we had 9 the rest of the way.

Double-doubles:
Kills + Digs: Rubin
Kills + Blocks: Francis
Assists + Digs: Miner  (almost a triple double: 8 blocks)

5-set matches lets you build up the total stats.

If that is in some convoluted way directed toward me, I agree Hambly knows how to coach.

Just a fan expressing an opinion. I’m glad we agree!

Stanford flew to North Carolina on Thursday November 21.  This is the sixth day they have been on the East Coast.  How many days are needed to get adjusted to the time zone?

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball 2024 - BostonCard - 11-27-2024

Missed Miner's double-double; thanks MT

Miner's 50 assists are good for a tie for 11th in the ACC this season.
Francis' 11 blocks are good for a tie for 7th in the ACC season, just behind her amazing 12 blocks in 3 sets against North Carolina.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball 2024 - paloalto - 11-27-2024

GT's Bertolino has a wicked top-spin jump serve.  Near the end of sets 3 and 5 Pringle passed her serve perfectly resulting in a Stanford point and getting Bertolino off the service line.   Pringle is becoming one of my favorite players.

The one announcer kept referring to Miner as the best setter in the country.  The two announcers were equally complimentary to both teams.    I feel bad for GT losing two matches in a row by a reverse sweep.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball 2024 - BostonCard - 11-27-2024

Announcers were much better because they a) knew what they were talking about (no "tooling the block" when someone hit right through the block) and b) they were a team with a play-by-play and color commentator.

Last play (the one that was challenged) showed why Miner is one of the best in the country.  It is really hard to corral an overpass with the opponent's middle blocker ready to pounce, and keep it onside.

The only GT player that played today that didn't play previously was Heloise Soares. Today she had 20 assists and 5 digs (nothing else).   I wouldn't ascribe the difference in result to her participation.

I'd be more inclined to describe the difference as home court vs 3-hour time zone shift+travel.

I only saw the last 2 sets.   Were there lots of successful challenges?  I saw Hambly's successful challenge near the end.

(8 kills by Kurt in set 4)

Great come-back win for Stanford!

I missed some of the first 2.5 sets, but I believe GT challenged successfully on the second point of the match.  Flipped it from 2-0 to 1-1.
The first three sets took two hours; there were more challenges, but I don't know how many.

I'm one of several, but pretty sure I'm the only one who hangs out here.  Give me a couple of hours to touch up the video, remove copyrighted material, etc. Will post the link when it's up.

Re ESPN, once again I could see the game on my computer,  but not on my iOS devices.  See the "ESPN sucks" thread elsewhere.

EDIT Nov 28 to add the match url.

Stanford is 11-0 at home, 10-4 (on our way to 10-5) on the road.  In those 4 losses, we've been swept three times (again, on our way to a fourth).  At home, not only did we beat GaTech in strait sets, we beat them 25-9, 25-17, 25-12; on the road, we are on our way to being swept.

LOL.  Happy to have been wrong (in my defense, I think it was 23-20 in the third set when I posted that and looking very not good).

Pretty individual IMO. For me, I can run on adrenaline for the first two days. Day three is the tough one. After that, I am fully adjusted. It also depends on direction. For me going east is easier than going west. Six days should be plenty for almost anybody.

Sami Francis had 6 blocks. 10 assists 1 solo. Sometimes during and right after the match the systems adds the two
Jet lag after 6 days?

Block assists are dealt with inconsistently.  Formally, you are correct, that total blocks should be solo blocks + 1/2 * block assists, and certainly when we are talking about team stats, that is true, since it doesn't make sense for a two-person block to count twice.  However,
the NCAA rules (http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/Stats_Manuals/VB/2008%20VB%20Stats%20Manual%20easy%20print.pdf) state "The total number of individual blocks is the sum of block solos and block assists. Each counts one point. The total number of team blocks is the sum of block solos and half the number of block assists."  You can see it in the ACC individual stats where, total blocks = solo blocks + block assists (see, for example, https://theacc.com/stats.aspx?path=wvball&year=2024).

So, for the match, Francis had 11 total blocks.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball 2024 - BobK - 11-27-2024

Yet the offical box has 6 blocks. As it should

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball 2024 - BostonCard - 11-27-2024

Again, it is inconsistent, but the Stanford Women's volleyball team stats uses total = bs + ba for individuals but total = bs + 1/2 ba for the team (and opponents):

https://gostanford.com/documents/09cf6f5a-a36e-453a-81dc-072ac95ed99b.pdf

The GoStanford box score for the match doesn't show total blocks on an individual basis, but the "leaders" gives Francis 11 blocks so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

https://gostanford.com/boxscore/24450

It does give us 13 total blocks as a team (we had 1 solo and 24 block assists, so 13 for the team is correct).

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball 2024 - pefloresjr - 11-27-2024

Hambly said in some of the chalk talks that ACC teams are clearly doing worse in the second game of the long travel weekends.  Even though this trip was 6 days, the team might not be jet lagged but are still dealing with recovering from the travel, staying in hotels, different food, and different facilities for practice/working out.  He also said they are dedicated students and continue to study hard when they are on the road.  All of it adds up.

In the first few sets Stanford looked a half step slow and out of sync.  They have never played there before so there is naturally an adjustment to be made.  I also think the team may have subconsciously been somewhat over confident.  Our game against Georgia Tech at Stanford a few weeks ago was one of the most lopsided I have seen us play.  Everything seemed to go right for us and wrong for GT.  It reflected us at our best and GT at their worst.  It was not indicative of both teams on average days.  GT was very fired up for this game and played like they were very comfortable.  We looked frustrated.

It turned around slowly but Stanford is the better team and showed a lot a grit by never giving up and continuing to grind.  It could have easily slipped away in the third, but Kurt had some great play to help us get over the hump.  It will be interesting to hear what Hambly has to say about our comeback.  I am always interested in the changes our players make to improve their play and how coaching decisions impacted that improvement.  Super happy that we get to head into Saturday's game on a winning streak.

Cheers,
Pete F.

If you looked up “trap game” in the dictionary, this match would surely have to be near the top of the list: a team we destroyed 2 weeks ago; but, still, a very talented team very motivated to win because of what happened 2 weeks ago, playing at their gym; an unfamiliar gym for us; after a week away from home; but just a few days before arguably our most important match of the regular season that everyone circled on the calendar a long time ago.

Hopefully, winning in a reverse sweep provides both a warning about the danger of a slow start but also a reward and incentive to never give up.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball 2024 - paloalto - 11-27-2024

I'll add my 2 cents about block stats off the top of my head because it's confusing.  It's  been my experience that solo blocks and block assists are tracked separately in box scores.  However in general discussion a block assist is described as a block, the same as a solo block, for counting up total blocks attributed to each player.

Also for those not into vb stats a block is only credited when a point is scored. A team can block many shots that go back over the net but don't result in a point. These blocks are not reflected in the stats.

Correct, according to the scoring manual:

A block is awarded when a player(s) blocks the ball that comes off an attack into the opponent’s court, leading directly to a point. There are three possible outcomes when a player(s) is blocking:
(1) The player(s) is credited with a successful block solo or block assist.
(2) The player is charged with a block error.
(3) The attack attempt is deflected off the blocker’s hands and is kept in play by one of the teams.

For attacks, there is a concept of the "0 attack" (an attack that results in neither a kill nor an error), but that concept isn't really recorded for blocks.  This is probably because of a desire to record a hitting percentage, where zero attacks go into the denominator, but no similar concept for blocks, so only scenarios 1 and 2 are recorded in official stats.
