And if there is any real traction on UCLA's part. Last year Stanford lost out to UCLA another commit who was listed as a DB commit by Stanford but opted for UCLA since they would let him play WR.
Ramsey had promised UCLA's coach he would take an official in the fall and when he committed to Stanford, he told the coaches that he would visit UCLA. He also wants to get back to the Farm this fall, so we will see.

College football is a business. You try to hire the best qualified. Stanford needs to pick their best 85 period. Some seniors and extra year guys need to go. Look at the UCLA game, beautiful weather, a traditional opponent and a ghost town in the sunny side upper deck. Next year needs to be positive or Stanford football will slip into a Wlat/Buddy irrelevance.
Some guys have flattened out. Time to see if younger guys have the juice on gameday.

Another 247sports.com mention of Stanford leading for David Bailey, this time from Steve Wiltfong:

Quote:Official visitors this weekend at USC include Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei Top247 linebacker David Bailey, one of the state’s top second-level defenders. I liked where USC stood in the summer but Stanford appears to have momentum coming into this trip.
No crystal balls yet for Bailey, although Rivals has one forecast for Bailey to USC.

If Bailey were to come to Stanford and put one of the OLB spots on lockdown for a few years, I wonder whether we’d see someone recruited as a edge defender bulk up to play DE. Maybe Aybar or Cooper.
I am on board with Phogge’s point that football is a business. I’m not sure I agree that so much is resting on the ‘22 season, but if the goal is to maximize near term results on the field, that militates in favor of keeping some fifth/sixth year players around. Even guys who’ve slowed in developing are still valuable in their latter years of eligibility as they’ve already hit grown man status. If you get lucky and unexpectedly land a star recruit, that’s one thing, but the 23rd recruit in this class is not likely to provide more as a true freshman than say Miezan or Williamson would as a fifth year senior.

Well, it says we have momentum, which is different than saying we are leading - that said, I'll be happy to eat my words and welcome him on board if he commits.

There are 59 scholarship freshmen, sophomores, or juniors on the roster, of which only Kyu Blu Kelly is at any risk for an early departure. That leaves up to 26 scholarships available (since we now apparently do occasionally do early enrollment and 1 player could enroll counting to the 2021 limit).
In practice, I think we would take the following players back, assuming they didn't declare for the NFL (Booker) or decide they were done with football or enter the transfer portal: Michael Wilson, Brycen Tremayne, Thomas Booker, Ricky Miezan, Jacob Magnum-Farrar, Kendall Williamson.
That could potentially get us down to 20 scholarship spots if everyone comes back, or 22 if Kelly and Booker go pro. Our class is currently at 20, would be 21 with Bailey and 22 with Bailey plus a WR. Bob can probably remind me if LDS missions (either returning from the class of 2020 or going out) will affect that math.
To me the question is not whether a 4th DL will mean we have to sacrifice a wide receiver in the class of 22; the question is whether if everyone wants to come back, and if they do, whether we would tell them sorry, we are full.

Just checking the math/phrasing here.
When you write, "That leaves up to 26 scholarships available" you mean at least 26 scholarships available (85-59) which could become 27 (1 early enrollment spot) or 28 (Kelly leaving). Yes?
I assume the 59 does not include Pakola, as he is not on the roster at the moment. But he is a Junior I think (?).
The numbers are tight, with 20 verbals, 1 LDS returnee, 6 we'd like back, and possibly Pakola. Kelly returning would put us over the limit - however there is always attrition somewhere. Very good chance someone in the 59 isn't on the team next year. And of course the 6 we'd most like back aren't likely to all return.
It appears that this year we will be filling our scholarship slots.

I meant that although 85-59 = 26, I thought there was still a scholarship limit of 25 per year, and so if none of the seniors came back, and we wanted to fill our scholarships, then we would have to enroll one early. But it was a bit more of an academic question, since some players will be back.

Pakola shouldn't count in any ways. Where is there a shred of evidence that he will ever suit up for Stanford?

Reuben fills out the last real need in this class, on paper.
Now we just have to hope that he and his cohort brings some attitude.

Nice, after all those visits to K-State! They should use him at wingback, then we could have Left Wing Mudia and Right Wing Mudia.

In evaluating the quiality of the '22 recruiting class, I find myself putting outsized weight on the outcome of David Bailey's recruitment. If he were to come to Stanford, he would likely be the school's top recruit since 2017, and he'd be only the third top 100 recruit in the 5 classes since 2017. If we're looking at whether Stanford can remain competitive for truly elite recruits anymore, David Bailey's recruitment is the best barometer we have right now. But I do need to remember that one recruitment is an impossibly small sample size, and the answer to the bigger question does not depend entirely on the outcome of this one event.

I think Bailey has one more official visit to Oregon? He took his official visit to USC last weekend and has already officially visited Cal, Stanford and UCLA. The CIF championship game is early December and the early signing period is December 15-17, so maybe we'll hear sooner rather than later.

The transfer portal is changing the landscape of college football significantly. Unfortunately, this is working to the disadvantage of Stanford.
