Schmitt singled with two runners in scoring position (Haniger, who scored, and he moved Yaz to third base). Schmitt's hit was also the GWRBI if that means anything these days.

It won't be long until Pitchers simply don't throw Schmitt anything in the strike zone. But Schmitt did take a strike in that AB. They certainly won't be throwing him anything near the zone on 0-2 for a while after last night.

I find what Schmitt is doing exciting.  And he certainly has energized the team.  But we should take a step back before announcing him as the franchise savior.  He’s minor league hitting numbers have been good not great.  And he is going to find the going tougher as pitchers learn his weaknesses - one of which is his chase rate.  How he adjusts will be key.

Don’t get me wrong - Schmitt, Bailey and the sudden fast tracking in the farm system is exciting.  We’ve been waiting for those “home grown players” and they are getting here.

This 4 game streak has been fueled by situational hitting (contact) and strong bullpen work.  The former generally comes and goes over a season.  But it appears to me the Giants have focused more recently on contact - not trying to do to much, thinking middle away in RISP situations.  That they have won 4 straight without hitting an HR is a very promising development.

Note to anyone who thinks you can buy championships….

San Diego with the third highest payroll in the game ($246 million) is currently 20-25 with a .194 team BA with runners in scoring position (no team in the history of the game has ever finished the season below the Mendoza Line).

Meanwhile, the Giants are finally beginning to reap the rewards of a strong farm system (kinda like LA).

Don’t get me wrong, I believe in strategic additions via free agency but wholesale spending is not the answer.

Dang, if only Judge had said yes……..

I really like seeing homegrown players succeed. I don't know why they should be any different from other players, but I feel like this is my order of preference:

1) Homegrown players drafted by the Giants.
2) Players that the Giants get for (almost) free, like Yastrzemski.
3) Players that the Giants get in trade on a more or less even basis.
4) High priced free agents.

I root for all of them, but I'll buy tickets to see stars, and players drafted by the Giants, especially if I've seen them play for the San Jose Giants.

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - OutsiderFan - 05-20-2023

Can we just call Logan Webb Logan Cain?

Webb goes 7 scoreless, the Giants muster 3 singles, kick the ball around in the 8th, and lose to visiting Marlins 1-0. At least Patrick Bailey had his first MLB hit.

No question best way to build is from the farm system then add.  Like the. Giants did in their Championship run.  I don’t think anyone disputes that. But money matters. Except to the Rays.

Most surprising team in baseball?  28-17 Texas Rangers.  Not sure it will hold.

Luis Matos is doing well in Sacramento. Could he break the streak of Giants OF prospect development futility? He’s just 21 and raking at AAA. I like his odds. Just hope when they play OKC (Dodgers) next week he doesn’t get completely neutralized.

I have to pinch myself at potential of three prospects being called up and staying in MLB this year.

Sure would be nice if some pitching prospects were coming. Harrison is letting everyone down with his control issues. The good news is he doesn’t give up hits, but will he ever stop walking guys so much?

Harrison is 21.  Patience.  Don’t understand the Matos/OKC neutralized comment.

As to whether he breaks in this year. I think there is an outside possibility,  partly depending on injuries.  When Slater and Pederson get back the spots narrow.  If Slater, Yaz, Conforto, Haniger stay healthy, there isn’t a spot. Particularly with Sabol being a capable OF.  But inevitably someone will get hurt.  And if it’s a month or two down the road and he’s hit well, he might get the call.

Other possibility is if they are out of it at deadline and dump some of the short termers.  That’s doubtful however.  There is nonAL East equivalent in NL.  Hover around .500  and you are in WC hunt.

Harrison - you are not taking into account the Automatic Ball-Strike system. Last year was the first in which ABS was utilized in the PCL.  To introduce the system, strikes were called on all pitches within one inch of the strike zone.  This year, ABS does not give any leeway.  Only pitches over the plate are called strikes.  This has caused all pitchers in the PCL to have to make adjustments.  I read an article that suggested Harrison’s control issues are, in part, a result of having to deal with this system.  Heck, across the league walks are up 22% (5.0 v. 4.1) over last year.

I have no doubt that Harrison will soon string together some effective starts which will lead to a promotion to SF.

They also need to stretch him out pitch count wise.  I don’t want to see him called up to be a 3-4 inning starter with a flipping “piggy-back”. He needs to learn how to get deeper in games.

Also, I truly hope MLB does not utilize that ABS system. I’d be curious to know the strike zone they are using.

Speaking of ABS, if implemented in MLB the evaluation for catchers will immediately change. Framing becomes irrelevant. Add in that pitchers can call their own games and it’s all ball blocking and throwing. My guess is that hitting will become more important for catchers.

I’m pulling hard for the system not to be employed. So far in minors, it’s led to a boatload of walks. Some guy in low A had a BA of .178 and OBP of .414. late in ‘21. That sounds like Little League.

OTOH, if they implement it Wade may set an .OBP record…..

Same thing as the NL West fifth place finishing teams in 2000, 2002, 2003, 2007 and 2017 and fifteen teams that finished third or worst in the NL West between 1995 and 2019. A sub-.500 career record manager managed all those teams.

I think the Giants are quietly turning into a very good fielding team:

1) Wade has the highest range factor among MLB first basemen (he does have the second most errors among 1Bs, but at least he's getting to the ball).
2) Estrada has the second highest range factor among MLB second basemen and has the second most assists in MLB.
3) Until his error the other day, JD Davis had the fifth best fielding percentage among MLB third basemen.
4) Casey Schmitt, in 12 games, doesn't have an error yet.
5) Yaz has the 4th most OF assists among MLB centerfielders. Yaz and Slater have both initiated double plays from the outfield.
6) DeSclefani has the most assists among MLB pitchers with 12 and the best range factor among MLB pitchers.
7) Stanford's own Tristan Beck has the most double plays initiated by pitchers in MLB with three.
8) Cobb has the most errors among MLB pitchers with two.
9) Haniger is a superb outfielder with four zone runs saved (Tied for third among left fielders).

And Patrick Bailey hit an HR off of a 98 mph heater today...

Well, maybe the Rangers can get him over .500 lifetime.  Those last 3 years with the Giants (214-272) did him no favors.

Giants, you're right on the money--Harrison's dad said the very same thing to me this evening. The ABS has changed pitching and really has tightened up the zone, where before, nicking the corner was a strike, now 3/4s of the ball has to be over the plate. FWIW, knew little of the kid until tonight, and became a fan. Really nice family, and his little brother is a stud catcher (and perhaps closer), winning the 49er Cal Hi Sports NCS Baseball Player of the Year.

I also read that the ABS system will not call the high strike, and that there is an appeals process, of sorts, which seems to be effective. In the minors, they're limited to three challenges in a game, both for batters and for pitchers. Current data suggests that pitchers challenge called balls successfully 42% of the time and batters challenge called strikes successfully 44% of the time.

Reason for optimism :  the aforementioned acquisitions should start to pick it up - at least Conforto (who is showing signs) Haniger and Taylor.  Not so sure with Manaea who is coming off a bad year and who has no real role as Kapler is Kapler.

Manaea is doing so badly, he just gave up a single to Carlos Correa (hitting .210). Still, he did pitch 3 2/3 innings of shutout ball, thanks to Stanford's Tristan Beck, who got the third out with one pitch and two in scoring position

Conforto just hit his ninth home run of the season. He's leading the Giants, and is second on the G's with 22 RBIs.

Not directly a Giant's post, but Glen Kuiper, Duane's brother, has been fired by the A's and NBC for using a racial slur during a broadcast a couple of weeks back. According to Kuiper, while the A's were in KC, he spent several hours at the Negro League Museum and was sharing the experience during the pregame when his words didn't come out the way he wanted them to, "mispronouncing" Negro, saying the n word instead.  After 20 years with the A's, he was gone.
