I like this unofficial NCAA RPI because it is updated several times a day whereas the official NCAA RPI comes out on Mondays.

It now has all of today's games included and shows Stanford at #4.  Penn State is #5 and has to play Nebraska on Friday.

Pretty individual IMO. For me, I can run on adrenaline for the first two days. Day three is the tough one. After that, I am fully adjusted. It also depends on direction. For me going east is easier than going west. Six days should be plenty for almost anybody.

Thank you. I spent several years flying east on Sunday, doing my song and dance M-F, getting home Friday night. Rinse and repeat.

Correct, according to the scoring manual:

A block is awarded when a player(s) blocks the ball that comes off an attack into the opponent’s court, leading directly to a point. There are three possible outcomes when a player(s) is blocking:
(1) The player(s) is credited with a successful block solo or block assist.
(2) The player is charged with a block error.
(3) The attack attempt is deflected off the blocker’s hands and is kept in play by one of the teams.

For attacks, there is a concept of the "0 attack" (an attack that results in neither a kill nor an error), but that concept isn't really recorded for blocks.  This is probably because of a desire to record a hitting percentage, where zero attacks go into the denominator, but no similar concept for blocks, so only scenarios 1 and 2 are recorded in official stats.

Interesting. Thanks.

I missed some of the first 2.5 sets, but I believe GT challenged successfully on the second point of the match.  Flipped it from 2-0 to 1-1.
The first three sets took two hours; there were more challenges, but I don't know how many.

A whole bunch of challenges, many correct.  Bad refs missed a lot of calls.  I gotta add that I can't imagine refereeing a volleyball game.  Way too many variables.

Coincidentally. I spent six days last week in North Carolina.

I never adjusted.

So now the team is flying west and playing LVL on three day’s adjustment…

Coming home is always easier IMO.  You get the benefits of your bed, your climate, your routines, etc.
And Stanford will certainly be hosting round 1 and round 2 at Maples, so they will be home now for at least a week.
However, Louisville will be flying in right after Thanksgiving AND will definitely fly back right after their trip to Maples since they too are going to host round 1 and round 2.

Looks to me that the winner of this contest will be a #1 seed and the loser is likely to be a #2 seed, so there is quite a lot to play for.    And both teams had to travel thousands of miles, but only one team is coming home.

I’m not sure about that. First of all, we would have to take care of business. It will be close, and Louisville would be headed into the tourney with 2 straight losses, but those two losses would be to Pitt and Stanford.  In fact, their only ACC losses would be 2 to Pitt and 1 to Stanford, while Stanford has a loss to Miami on top of losses to Louisville and Stanford.  Louisville’s only losses will have been to top-10 teams (2 to Pitt, 1 to Penn State, 1 to Nebraska, and if we beat them, 1 to Stanford).  On the other hand, Stanford has losses to (Pitt, Nebraska, Louisville, and Miami).

I’d say looking at the entire resume, the two teams are remarkably similar.  You might give Stanford the nod for having one fewer loss, but Louisville had to play Pitt twice, while Stanford only played Pitt once, and Stanford has the worst loss.

So, if Louisville wound up getting a #1 seed, I don’t think it would be completely unfair.

All of this is predicated on taking care of business tomorrow, and let’s remember that Louisville swept us last time.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball 2024 - paloalto - 11-29-2024

Penn State beat Nebraska.  That's the worst possible result for Stanford.  If Penn State had lost and Stanford would win against Louisville, Stanford's RPI would be better than Penn State.  With the win Penn State is definitely a #1 regional seed.  Nebraska and Pitt will be #1 regional seeds.

In the past the selection committee has given extra weight to how teams were playing toward the end of the season, particularly the last week going into the tournament.   If Stanford beats Louisville they will end the season with two losses.  I see Stanford getting a better seed than Louisville if Stanford wins tomorrow.

With a Stanford win tomorrow, it's still possible Creighton could get the #4 overall seed with Stanford #5.  I'm ok with that.

Direction makes a big difference. West to east is difficult. East to west not so much. IIRC there are studies of this phenomenon. Give me a day or so.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball 2024 - paloalto - 11-29-2024

I just looked at the unofficial NCAA RPI with update showing the Nebraska/Penn State match.  Here is the current RPI%.

3. Louisville 0.7232   (25-4)

4. Penn State 0.7136   (29-2)

5. Stanford 0.7066    (24-4)

6. Creighton 0.7012  (28-2)

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball 2024 - BostonCard - 11-29-2024

By RPI, Stanford is ahead of Creighton, and a win against Louisville would cement that.
Louisville is 0.016 points ahead of Stanford in RPI.  I don’t think a loss would be enough to push Stanford ahead by RPI.
Of course, the committee looks at more than RPI, so who knows.

If we win, the best case scenario is that we are the fourth #1 seed.  Decent chance we would be the top #2 seed or (worst case) second #2 seed.  If we lose, we are probably the second or third #2 seed.

If you type the word h.u.g.e. now it will be replaced with brobdingnagian rather than "of immense proportions."

Yu and Blyashov both suited up and warming up.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball 2024 - BostonCard - 11-30-2024

At Maples for the match. Great attendance, but so far not great volleyball from Stanford. Louisville is up 10-5 and we just took. Timeout.

BC

Stanford has slowly battled back and it’s now 20-20; Louisville timeout.  Nice to hear this place getting loud!

BC

Stanford stakes set 1 25-23!  Nice comeback.

Great atmosphere here. Big crowd!

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball 2024 - CompSci87 - 11-30-2024

Stanford battles from behind in set 2 to go up 15-14. Timeout. Some hard fought volleyball here!

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball 2024 - BostonCard - 11-30-2024

Close match between two very evenly matched teams.  Stanford is up 15-14 at the media timeout.  A bit bummed that the loudest noise is for the free tshirts rather than the high level volleyball.

BC

Rubin actually tooled the block. Stanford up 18-16 and Louisville takes a timeout.

Compsci… where are you?  We are behind the engine on the current Stanford end.

BC

Francis and (I think Miner) with an exclamation point block, and Louisville takes a timeout at 20-17.

BC

And Harvey ends the second set for Stanford, 25-22.

And here is my Kami Miner appreciation post.  One thing that has really improved this year from the last couple is the speed of the attacks. Miner really has the ability and strength to set shoots, even almost crosscourt, and slides.  Even her back sets are faster than in the past.  It requires better timing with the attackers, but it means that they are often up against a late or poorly formed block.  The other thing Miner does really well is that she can salvage even so-so passes that normally would result in an out of system attack. There was one point at about 20-18 in the second set where the pass was a bit off to the left and came in with pace, and not only did Miner get the and get under it, but she shot a back set almost perfectly giving Louisvilles defense almost no time to prepare.  Merely getting there and getting a set would have been a good play, let alone backsetting it three quarters of the way across the court with pace.  We are going to really miss Miner.

Lizzie Andrew showing some muscle!

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball 2024 - BostonCard - 11-30-2024

Rubin, Andrew, Francis, and Kurt all with some big swings today. And Harvey I think has the highest percentage.

Media timeout in the third; 15-13 Louisville.
