He is a free agent at the end of the year. He walks and they get nothing. If he wasn't going to be pitching anyway keeping him doesn't help. Granted, his absence doesn't help them win this season, unless possibly Birdsong feels better about his tenure. It does save them money, which may help in the next 7 hours but I doubt it.

The deadline is past and the Giants were clearly sellers. However, they seemed to be selling expensive pieces that didn't really "fit" into their future plans. They have more of those still around. They didn't get rid of all of them. OTOH it wasn't a "fire sale" and arguably they are no worse off on the field now than before the trades were made. They did save a lot of money though :-).

Didn't Farhan sign Soler this year? Even I had read he is second half guy like Snell, and he was getting hot. Why pay a half a year's salary on a contract for several years, then dump him? Why sign him if he didn't fit in their future plans? Major screw up in my opinion. Good luck signing any hitter next year if this is how they're treated.

Maybe a bit off topic but it is a former Giant and former Stanford guy. Article is brutal, but so are Slater's current stats. He is definitely on a contender. Hopefully he can manage to stay there, possibly playing in the World Series this year. That would be a big bonus for what has undoubtedly been a bad year for him.

Having been born in Baltimore, I was a big Oriole fan in the 60's. I happened to glance at the stats of of the '69 roster last night. Incredible the difference in what we see today. The averages and the power all hugely better than what we see today. And that was during the second dead ball era.  Boog Powell hit .304, with 37 homers and 121 RBI's. Only two players hit under .250: Elrod Hendricks at .244 and HOFer Brooks Robinson at .234, though with 23 homers. Of course there was Brooks' brother from another mother Frank. He hit .308, with 32 bombs and 100 RBIs. Even the rif raf hit well.

What's changed today in the evaluation of hitters? Guys that hit under .250 with a little power are praised?!?

Since this year is a total loss, the #1 objective was getting into a position to avoid the CBT next year by dumping players who were not in the plans for ‘25.  I think the moves today went a long way towards achieving that goal.  

Speaking as a critic of Zaidi, I have to acknowledge his work today.  Well done, Farhan.

The season was over after they lost 2 of 3 to Colorado(!) and 3 of 4 to LA following the All-Star break.

Might be a wee bit difficult to sell tickets now...unless SF pulls off a long win streak.

Last night's A's attendance was the largest SF Giants crowd since the last Dodgers game in June and 10th largest of the 54 home games so far. So...we'll see.

Logan Webb (8-8) pitched masterfully tonight, complete game in under two hours, which is good because the Giants could muster little offense against their former starter, Ross Stripling, now 2-10 and leading MLB in losses. Luciano replaced Soler, went 1 for 3 in the 8th batting spot. Wisely got the RBI with a sac fly from the 9th batting spot.

I actually don’t think that’s what he did. This was kind of consistent with his plan.  . He’s been trying to slowly incorporate the younger players and open up opportunities for them. While still leaning on some veterans.  

 Getting rid of Soler  (who I thought was a bad signing in the first place) opened a place for Luciano. He can primarily DH the rest of this season while theta try to figure out where to play him defensively. (I think they have failed miserably on that score to date.)

Jackson has been bad, so no problem dumping him. Cobb hadn’t pitched for the Giants all season and Birdsong has been electric so, while a little bit of a roll of you the dice to me that one makes sense. As it opens a rotation spot for Birdsong. 

Admittedly, they weren’t buyers. But when you 4 1/2 games back and there are three teams ahead of you for the last wildcard spot I don’t think you should be.

They have an outside shot. But as Zaidi said they need to go on a 10–2 or 14–3 type run. I think their pitching makes it possible.  Although it was pretty depressing to only score one run off Ross Strippling. He may be the worst starting pitcher  in baseball.

7 game road trip coming up against Cincinnati and Washington. Two teams that have not been playing particularly well. Unfortunately, the Giants get  Hunter Greene  in game one in Cincinnati. His last four starts he’s given up 1 run over 27 innings.

Giants have not been good on the road. That has to change immediately or they can forget it.

Behind the scenes I hope they’re doing everything they can to attempt to negotiate extensions with Snell  and Chapman. I think the conventional wisdom is that Snell is probably going to leave, but there’s a good chance Chapman will stay. 

Unfortunately, Boras always counsels his clients to hit the free agent market. Of course that didn’t work well this off-season. But I would’ve felt a little better had Chapman fired Boras and hired a new agent.

 I want to see Chapman come back. He’s been their best player this year and he’s played at an All-Star level.   He’s been solid at the plate, excellent in the field and the most under appreciated aspect to his game is that he’s very fast. Which on the Giants is rare.  I’ve enjoyed watching him play.

I was really happy to see Stripling go. It's bad enough to have an employee end-run the manager when they're good players...but when they flat out suck -- like Stripling -- it's doubly awful. He goes to the press whining about how he doesn't understand how he's being used. As an aside, Ross, it's because you had a 5.40 ERA, and when Kapler put you in after you whined in the press, you gave up three earned runs in 3 1/3rd innings. Nice to see you continue your abject incompetence as you are tied for fourth in all of MLB with 10 losses with the A's. 2-10 record. Still confused about how you were used?

As for Soler...his OPS through end of July wasn't all that different from last year, and his OPS in August/Sept/Oct was .940. He hit 36 HRs last year, 32 of which would have been HRs at Oracle. I think it was a good chance to take. I'm extremely happy with Luciano taking over here, plus Luciano can play in the field. When Lee comes back next year, this team will be awesome.

Chapman would be a great permanent Giant. We don't have anyone near his capabilities. Snell is way too up and down, mostly down. I'd be happy to see him walk, given the pitching talent we have already. I'd like to see a rotation of Webb, Harrison, Birdsong, Ray, and either Hicks, Miller, Winn or Bivens. Probably not Roupp or Black. They have great options, raised from within.

I'm pretty excited about next year. There's still a path for this year...

And that's why the Giants didn't trade Blake Snell...Snell thew the first Giants' no-hitter in nine years (since Chris Heston on 6/9/15). Giants win 3-0, Snell had 11 strikeouts, three walks. Fitzgerald had three hits, new acquisition Mark Canha had two hits and a walk.

Cincinnati set off fireworks after the game, which was nice.

first time that Giants pitchers have thrown complete-game shutouts in back-to-back contests since Livan Hernandez and Jason Schmidt did it in August 2002.
