I for one certainly wish Kamari nothing but success--except for the times he plays Stanford, of course.
IMO, you shouldn't commit until you are 100% in.
Of course, with players and coaches having no hesitation about changing schools these days, perhaps that is a bit of a quaint idea.
That or we should call it something other than "committing." According to the 247sports.com database, there have been 407 and counting decommitments this recruiting cycle.
Maybe a better term would be "going steady."
How about "preliminary intention until I change my mind or something I prefer comes along."
At any rate, "commitment" is a misleading term given how casually recruits (and some coaches) take it.
It's a verbal commitment today. I think that's a pretty good representation of what it means. Very few kids renege on written commitments (aka, letters of intent). In life and in business, people renege on verbal commitments all the time, which is why we have written ones. It's annoying but it's understandable.
Moreover, many schools (other than Stanford) renege on their offers to recruits (see Jim Harbaugh). It goes both ways - maybe someone else can verify this, but isn't it just as common for schools to make offers that they can't or don't end up wanting to honor as for recruits to flip?
Yeah, well to paraphrase an old saying, a verbal commitment isn't worth the paper its printed on.
That's the way the game gets played these days. Of course it doesn't bother us when a player who has committed to another school flips to Stanford.

Players de-committing has become common, but I'm much more bothered by coaches issuing dozens (or hundreds) of offers that are not committable.

Per 247sports, we are up to 443 decommits for the class of 2022. At least all those kids aren't on my lawn.

The sky is falling on college football. Some schools are going to say screw it and bail. Ultimately there will be a professional division and a club division.

Well, the good news, TC, is that we will both be dead soon enough, and it won’t be our problem. That applies to a lot of things, sadly. Anyway, that’s how I get through the day.

In keeping with the gloom-and-doom topic, 4-star safety Kamari Ramsey--who recently decommitted from Stanford--committed to UCLA today (Tuesday). Double ouch!

Pretty sure this was widely expected, though it still does hurt. Our safeties haven’t exactly lit the world on fire since Justin Reid.

Yeah, I think if you checked out his recruiting profile UCLA was definitely where he was headed when he said no to us. He said he really liked his future teammates there and felt very comfortable when the coaches showed him how he was going to be used on defense.
Not sure what they told him that we didn't, but maybe staying closer to home had an appeal to him also.

I bet 8-4 vs 3-9 influenced him too.

There's a good chance it did, although maybe 3-9 means you have a chance to get on the field (and to the NFL) earlier.
According to the recruiting analysts two weeks ago he said he was still favoring Stanford, so who knows what changed his mind. I suspect it was the in home visit the UCLA coaches did a week or so ago. I wonder if we had one to plead our final case.

I'm not a brobdingnagian fan of Shaw but give him his due. He was essential in bringing in our best defensive recruit in years. There was a lot of Mater Dei peer pressure on David Bailey to sign with USC and he visited there with some teammate commits last week. He probably heard out Lincoln Riley for five minutes and didn't like the contrast.
Quote from 24/7"-- "Coach Shaw is a great man," Bailey said. "He's a very genuine person and easy to talk with. It doesn't matter if we're talking about football or life, you can tell he really cares about you and your future."

Lots of reasons why Ramsey, or anyone else, would choose UCLA over Stanford:
* Better fit re: football program (coaches, future teammates, NFL potential, etc.)
* Childhood favorite team
* Easier for family members and friends to attend games
* Significant other attending UCLA, or a college in LA
* Undergraduate major degree program--I had a freshman dormmate at Stanford who transferred to UCLA because she realized that she wanted to major in theater and realized that UCLA had a better program
* Better fit re: student life/atmosphere--a lot of young people are attracted to Westwood
And yes, although it wasn't a surprise that Ramsey went to the Bruins, it still stings for those of us who believe that this class needs to be the watershed class that turns Stanford's football fortunes around. I suppose Tennyson would say "'Tis better to have recruited and lost than never to have recruited at all."

Yeah, but you still wonder why he chose Stanford first and then changed his mind. He knew about all those UCLA pluses when he committed to Stanford.

Bailey's early enrollment is very welcome. He's going to see significant time as a freshman and needs all the practice reps he can get.
FWIW, the scholarship DEs and OLBs on the current roster who are likely to return are: Herron, DiCosmo, Armitage, Franklin, Buckey, and Aybar (plus, add Pakola, if we're lucky). Since Phillips is likely the only returning DT and the team is moving to a 4-3, some of those guys are going to have to move inside. I imagine Franklin and/or Buckey would play DT, as would Pakola if he were to return. That potentially leaves only 4 scholarship players for 4 positions. So, yeah, Bailey getting up to speed quickly is key.

Good question, of course, but this isn't the first time we've lost a commit to UCLA. Brandon Stephens, now with the Baltimore Ravens, and Josh Moore are the most recent, although I don't know what their admissions statuses were when they decommitted.
Maybe Ramsey was pressured into committing by a well-meaning adult when he was admitted to Stanford? His mind said Stanford, but his heart said UCLA, and in the end he went with his heart? My son is a freshman in high school, so he's just starting to think about colleges, and he's been talking with older siblings of friends who are waiting to hear from the universities to which they have applied. The my-parents-want-me-to-go-to-school-X-but-I-really-like-school-Y theme is still around.

It wouldn't surprise me if many of our de-commits over the years were the result of parents pushing for Stanford while the student-athlete's feelings are elsewhere. Most parents put more emphasis on the value of a Stanford education/degree whereas some high schoolers may weigh other factors more heavily. I was not a football recruit but although Stanford was initially my top choice my parents were lobbying me to go to Harvard, to the point that I "committed" there until right before "signing day" when I went with my heart, so I can relate somewhat to that dynamic.

I remember a few years ago we went up against UCLA for a linebacker from the LA area named Jordan Zumwalt. He committed to Stanford and told the Stanford coaches the night before signing day he was still in the fold. However when he woke up the next morning it was UCLA. Asked what changed his mind he said he really didn't know but it was just a gut feeling. Sometimes there really aren't a lot of good reasons why kids make the decisions they do.
Jordan never played on a UCLA team that beat Stanford. It would be nice to be able to say the same thing when Ramsey is done with UCLA. Not sure we will be able to though.
