This is my 40th season as a Stanford baseball fan and this team may be my favorite of them all. They don't rely on one to two stars, they get contributions from the entire rosters it seems. They are strong from 1-9 and on any given night a different player is the hero. Pitching has been a collective effort since they really only had one surefire starter and he faded down the stretch. The team started 1-5 in conference but turned it around to win the league. Having to win three games in two days in the regional they did it, and then having to come back from losing the first game of the super regional they did it again. Phenomenal, resilient, mentally tough team. And just as an observer they seem tight knit and supportive of each other and always look like they are full of energy and having fun. Great team to root for. Can't wait for the CWS.

Five of Stanford's last six games were "win or go home" elimination games. This team won all five of them. Very impressive display of coming through under pressure.

Nice observation. This is a real team. Kudos to the players and coaches for making this happen. 

On the downside, weather in Omaha has temps around 100 F through next Monday. Checking with my brother who lives there for confirmation. Stay tuned.

My brother and his extended family live in Omaha. Gonna let them worry about cooling. But after today at Sunken Diamond, I understand how my age affects heat sensitivity. Youngster.

Current plan is to head out sometime after the second Stanford game.

It's amazing that just a few months ago there was a raging debate on the Cardboard about whether the baseball coach should be fired and whether he was a "good hire" in the first place.  Back-to-back appearances in Omaha will, hopefully, put that debate to bed.

If Stanford could just get some starting pitching, they might have something. 

Over 8 NCAA tournament games:

Starting Pitching: 20.1 IP, 25 ER, 11.07 ERA
Bullpen: 51.2 IP, 16 ER, 2.79 ERA

The only starter who went the requisite 5 innings to get a win was Ty Uber in the regional, second game against Texas State. 
In the last four games, not a single starter got through the second inning. 

Somehow, both the starting pitching and the bullpen turned it around for the postseason.

I must say I got really concerned when the announcers thought Williams would come in to close the 9th.
One could argue we would have been better off bypassing starting pitching altogether in the super regional.
Don’t think Esquer will be ready to do this and reverse pitching order, but it’s good to know he has the evidence to be confident pulling starting pitching even without recording a single out.
Bruno and Matthews particularly have been immense. May those performances carry on to Omaha, very likely they will be needed.

This team simply will not go silently into the night. In 5 elimination games Stanford has had a Starter reach the 3rd inning twice and the 4th inning just once. In 4 of those 5 games Stanford was trailing at some point in the game. It is hard to imagine a scenario where this particular team could survive a combination of losses and rough starts but they have done exactly that. The starting pitching (or lack there of) put the pressure on everyone else to carry the load. 6 total outs from the starters in a 3 game regional must be a record. I have been as critical as anyone of pitchers not named Williams or Mathews. Hats off to everyone coming out of the pen and finding ways to get outs. So far Stanford has avoided the "disaster scenario" in terms of pitching, which I see as using Mathews in a close game that ends up being a loss (I might need to redefine that situation, 3 runs and no outs to start the game seems pretty disastrous). The lineup sure gives us a reason to hope, no matter how dim things may look!

Regardless of what happens in Omaha this team has been a heck of a squad to watch and follow. Getting to Omaha is such a challenge, look at the other national seeds. Just like when the bullpen was struggling, it was not for a lack of talent. The starting rotation has plenty of talent as well (and should be reasonably well rested after some short outings). Here's to hoping we see what this team can do with a few quality starts!

I have watched Stanford baseball for many years. This team is definitely the most fun to watch. 
The hitting from the bottom of the order is the best I have seen, and you gotta love all of the home runs from this team!

Great year regardless of the outcome in Omaha.

brobdingnagian Congrats to Esquer and the entire team on a great showing over the last two weeks!   I think his position as Stanford's baseball coach is very solid and given his successful history with the program and with Nine, I don't think we find a better fit.   The AD has other greater concerns right now given the decline of 2 major programs....

I think I heard Fleming state that Stanford has never lost an elimination game at Sunken Diamond.  If so, that's a pretty impressive home stat.    Love this team and I'm looking forward to cheering them on as they make their run in Omaha!  Time to bring home another flag for Sunken Diamond!

The bullpen has been great, and the usual suspects immense as you note. In addition, there are some surprising pen guys who have impressed me just now:

Cody Jensen - I don't think there were any plans for him to get into a game this post season until the early blowout in game #1 vs UConn caused Esquer to look for guys to close out the game without hurting the expected bullpen depth. But he was the most effective Stanford pitcher on the night, went 2.1 innings and he faced only one guy over the minimum who was a HBP. 
I think there is potential in his arm. Maybe for next year? (he is officially listed as a redshirt junior - don't think football ever uses the term redshirt)

Max Meier - A junior, he only pitched 7.0 innings in the regular season on six appearances. However, he has made four appearances in the tournament, gone 6.2 innings, didn't give any free passes, and allowed 4 runs (all to UConn in the first game mess). Still not quite sure where he stands in the bullpen hierarchy, but something just shifted the right direction for him. 

Drew Dowd - It's not a surprise that he was pitching, but perhaps that he was pitching so well. While the third starter early on, he had lost his starting job and hadn't pitched well for about a month. In three appearances in the regionals and super regionals he went 8.1 innings, gave up 2 runs (both vs UCSB). He's not quite over his control problems (6 walks and 1 HBP in those three outings), but a good bounce back.
