2012 was one of three years when seven no-hitters were thrown, including Matt Cain's perfect game (the others were thrown by Philip Humber (another perfect game), Jared Weaver, Johan Santana, 6 Seattle mariners pitchers in a game started by Kevin Millwood, Felix Hernandex, and Homer Bailey).

The other two years were in the early nineties, and Ryan pitched a no-hitter in each of the years (but not twice in the same year).

The overall record was in 1884, with eight.

In the Larsen perfect game Dale Mitchell struck out to end the game calked strike by ump
Babe Panelli.

Pinelli's father was killed by a falling light pole during the '06 Quake. In the Clark Gable/Spencer Tracy movie "San Francisco" a vegetable cart driver is killed by a wall of following bricks. There is some Hollywood lore that the Pinelli death inspired the scene.

Albert Pujols is reportedly going to sign with the Dodgers in the next couple days.  If so, he will be the oldest active player in MLB (born January 1980).

This prompted the following question.  Who was the last player born in the 1970’s to play in a big league game?  His final game was in 2019.

RE: Sports trivia thread - Phogge - 05-15-2021

Erik Kratz

You got it, Phogge...

Fernando Rodney, born 1977.

Ichiro was also born in the 70’s.  However, he played his last big league game in March 2019.  Rodney played his final game in September 2019.

What MLB hitter had the most extra base hits in a season?
How many hitters had multiple extra base hit totals of 100 or more in a season?
Which hitter had two consecutive season totals of at least 100 extra base hits?
Joe Nuxhall of the Reds was the youngest major league player. Who was the youngest American League player?

I would guess Babe Ruth, one of his earlier seasons, maybe his first 50+ HR season when he was trim enough to get a lot of doubles and triples.

I would imagine not more than 3-4 had extra base totals of 100+ in multiple seasons.  Ted Williams wasn't a runner, so not him.  And I'd say hitters from the 20s and 30s.  Maybe Mays.  I don't think Aaron, he never went over 44 HRs.  Foxx?  Hornsby?

two consecutive, I'd say Ruth

RE: Sports trivia thread - BobK - 05-17-2021

I’ll go Bonds with 100 extra base hits
And the most
Sosa with 100 and Ruth maybe mantle

Bonds two straight 100 extra base hits

youngest in the AL. ??

RE: Sports trivia thread - Phogge - 05-17-2021

100 extra base hits twice: Gehrig, Chuck Klein and twice consecutively by Todd Helton.

Ruth is correct with 119 in 1921.

Still looking for youngest American leaguer.

Tom Seaver passed away recently in Calistoga. What other Hall of Famer died in Calistoga?

RE: Sports trivia thread - BostonCard - 05-17-2021

Carl Scheib, who was the youngest major leaguer until Nuxhall.   Both Nuchall and Scheib (and Brooklyn Dodgers SS Tommy Brown) went into service during World War II, when there was a manpower shortage due to the war).  Who is the youngest player to play outside of the WWII period (at least in the modern era)?

RE: Sports trivia thread - Phogge - 05-17-2021

Bob Feller?

RE: Sports trivia thread - BobK - 05-17-2021

Darn Phogge is fast today

Feller died in Cleveland Ohio.

He also wasn't the youngest non-world war II player.  Pitcher is correct; but his career was nothing like Feller's.  He got a call-up in September of 1956, and played one more season in the majors in 1957, then several seasons in the minors without ever being called back up.  He still has the record for youngest pitcher to ever start a game in the majors.

RE: Sports trivia thread - Phogge - 05-17-2021

Feller was born in Van Meter Iowa.

Hint: the other HOFer who passed in Calistoga was born in the Bay Area and was a National League outfielder.
