The bullpen has been great, and the usual suspects immense as you note. In addition, there are some surprising pen guys who have impressed me just now:
Cody Jensen - I don't think there were any plans for him to get into a game this post season until the early blowout in game #1 vs UConn caused Esquer to look for guys to close out the game without hurting the expected bullpen depth. But he was the most effective Stanford pitcher on the night, went 2.1 innings and he faced only one guy over the minimum who was a HBP.
I think there is potential in his arm. Maybe for next year? (he is officially listed as a redshirt junior - don't think football ever uses the term redshirt)
Max Meier - A junior, he only pitched 7.0 innings in the regular season on six appearances. However, he has made four appearances in the tournament, gone 6.2 innings, didn't give any free passes, and allowed 4 runs (all to UConn in the first game mess). Still not quite sure where he stands in the bullpen hierarchy, but something just shifted the right direction for him.
Drew Dowd - It's not a surprise that he was pitching, but perhaps that he was pitching so well. While the third starter early on, he had lost his starting job and hadn't pitched well for about a month. In three appearances in the regionals and super regionals he went 8.1 innings, gave up 2 runs (both vs UCSB). He's not quite over his control problems (6 walks and 1 HBP in those three outings), but a good bounce back.
Great Post.
During the tv broadcast it was stated that Cody Jensen had a productive freshman season followed by the COVID cancelled season followed by last season in which he had an injury issue. Mr. Jensen and Mr. Meier have been a very pleasant surprise this late in the season, but these late season surprises do happen with some frequency in college baseball due to how the schedules are planned during the season and then followed by regional and super regional format.

Thanks for this, CT.
I'd love it if more folks could chime in with analysis of our different arms. I am afraid that I do not know enough about how the teams starters and relievers were viewed out of high school in terms of recruiting and potential, and how they have panned out. Were Dixon or Uber expected to be weekend starters? Dowd? O'Rourke? Should Pancer start?
I have enjoyed this season, from the weird slow start to Omaha. I am so used to a Stanford team with dominant starters and just enough offense. It is the reverse this year, and I am really fascinated to see if we can do it with this interesting mix of pitchers.

Of the current Srs which there aren’t many now none were top 100 out of HS
Brandon Dieter now a pro was top 100
Of current Jrs Jones just missed top 100
Gargus was 65 :) Hinkleman 60. Yes they are still on the roster :)

No, No, Tony, you don't understand. Can't you see he is just like David Shaw? Following his early years will be years where he won't change coaches, and the team can't play .500 ball, but he is a Stanford Grad and a good representative of the University so he will stick around forever. The complainers were just trying to prevent this scenario.

Gargus has actually played a bit. Going into this season I thought he was more likely than Graham to emerge as the first baseman.
Dieter's not a pro, at least yet.
Here is a note I wrote about him a couple of weeks ago.

New Mexico State tied the game with OSU in the ninth inning, but then their pitcher threw eight straight balls to load the bases and walk in the winning run in the bottom of the tenth. With two out. Beavers avoid the upset, 5-4.
In fact, all four Beavs who got on base in the tenth got there via a walk - one intentional.
On that NMSU team is former Stanford player Brandon Dieter. He played at Stanford in 2019 and 2020 as a middle infielder and pitcher. Started for the beginning of the season in 2019 at shortstop and second base but lost the job later on. Started at the beginning of 2020 at shortstop but then lost the job. The issue seems to be primarily on offense where he never got the bat going. Upon transferring to NMSU he's been the starting shortstop and leadoff hitter for all of 2021 and this year, but hasn't appeared in a game since the end of the regular season (where he pitched an inning). I would guess that means he got injured, but cannot find anything on the web stating so.

I missed that comment in the broadcast. However, I made a similar comment after the game.

Cody Jensen had a promising frosh year in 2019 and was perhaps our best pitcher in the tough super regional series at Mississippi State. He struggled (along with the whole team) in the aborted 2020 season. Got injured and red shirted in 2021. This year he has had quite a few appearances, but hadn't appeared in almost a month and hadn't appeared in a weekend game since mid-April until Saturday. He pitched well on Saturday, with only a HBP marring an otherwise perfect two innings. If he were to return, I could see him as a major contributor next year. ]

of immense proportions Congrats to Esquer and the entire team on a great showing over the last two weeks! I think his position as Stanford's baseball coach is very solid and given his successful history with the program and with Nine, I don't think we find a better fit. The AD has other greater concerns right now given the decline of 2 major programs....
I think I heard Fleming state that Stanford has never lost an elimination game at Sunken Diamond. If so, that's a pretty impressive home stat. Love this team and I'm looking forward to cheering them on as they make their run in Omaha! Time to bring home another flag for Sunken Diamond!
The Stanford press release said that Stanford is 10-0 in winner-take-all post-season games at Sunken Diamond.

That stat is a little deceptive as we've been swept in supers by fullerton in 2017 and 2018. I initially interpreted it as we've never lost a postseason series at home.

It's kind of interesting to see the correlation between these recruit rankings and how things have played out. There is a ... loose correlation.
I don't think the scouting of high school players is any looser than in football or basketball, but I think the business of putting rankings out on the web is much less developed. That leads to a lot of misses in what is available.
One thing to note with Perfect Game class ranking is that Stanford's classes always suffer in the ranking system by being small. This is a general feature of Stanford recruiting across sports. As noted in football recruiting ranking discussions, size itself can be a plus in the value of a class, but it is much less in baseball than football given the number of people who play.
One note of clarification. Graham wasn't top 500, he was 500+. What Perfect Game does is rank 499 guys, then dumps everyone else they list as "500". As far as I can tell, everybody with the 500 designation is listed in random order.

Thanks for the correction on Graham.
One other things about the rankings and the biggest one is that many of these kids will be drafted and signed thus unlike Stanford signees never play in college

I will add that PG rankings in particular have to be taken with a grain of salt since they are biased toward players who attend their showcases. Being in the showcase business and the rankings business leads to a conflict of interest that they don't really try to address.

Indeed. For example LSU has 11 top-100 commits this year and Vanderbilt has 8, but the vast majority of those players will sign pro contracts. Nobody expects Druw Jones or Brandon Barreira to ever set foot on Vanderbilt's campus. Stanford only has one top-100 commit but he will probably enroll, just as last year we only had one top-100 commit (Montgomery) and he enrolled and has played a big role.

Could the availability of NILs increase the number of recruits enrolling?

Does anyone rerank the athletes to exclude those who go pro? It’s a bit misleading to say that Bruno was ranked #35, which is great, but is likely among the top five of those who enrolled in college.
