And Utah beats Colorado by 1. That puts us a solid 2 games ahead of Colorado. But now Oregon State is in 2nd place. If they and we win out, then the final weekend--at Oregon State-will give them an opportunity even it all up with us and tie us for the championship.
Who would have thought that UCLA would sink to 6th place. TVO with 1.1. Wow.

Oregon State is for real. They won this nailbiter despite BEERS only playing in the first quarter
because of injury early in the second quarter. Their guard ensemble is really tough.
The deceptively slow VAN OELHOFFEN is peaking at the right time.
Then there's GARDINER.
Stanford will have its hands full at Corvallis two weeks from now.

I agree! What a finish! Just a great game for women's basketball fans. And Oregon State did it without Raegan Beers, who went out at about one minute into the second quarter with an elbow to the nose from a Kiki Rice drive to the basket. Beers was on the floor for a very long time and then very wobbly leaving the arena. She didn't return. (There is a replay of the game at 1:30-3:00 a.m. tonight/tomorrow morning on the Pac-12 national channel.)
Stanford's finish in the Pac-12 is within its control at this point--go Card!!!

Right now our return OSU match is scheduled for Thursday 2/29 on PAC-12 Oregon only. If I read this correctly, this means it will be available only for live streaming in the Bay Area, not on PAC-12 Net or PAC-12 Bay Area. I wonder if they will change it?

Their schedule shows the P12BAHD channel has the live Cal-Oregon WBB game in a half-hour time slot at 7PM, their usual screw-up. Live MBB is on PAC12HD. Blame whomever scheduled the overlapping games. Blame PAC-12 TV scheduling for the screwed-up live broadcast half-hour slot.

Lots of talk about Oregan State's miracle win last night over UCLA, but there was a controversial play just into the second quarter that generated as much or more post-game conversation. Kiki Rice led upward with an elbow into Raegan Beers knocking Beers down and out of the game. She laid on the ground in great pain sobbing. I’m sure we will get a report as to the extent of her injuries, it wasn’t clear in watching the game whether she broke her nose, lost some teeth, got a concussion, or what. She is a big, tough player and it was tough watching her try to stand as she was helped off the court. She didn’t return.

I just watched some of my recording of the game, made a point of checking out the incident with Beers. It didn't look intentional to me, just an accidental swing that caught Beers wrong. But there weren't lots of replays from different angles, so ???
But more significant, those last seven seconds. Wow, incredible. Four game winning shots in less than 7 seconds, back and forth. The seven seconds of that game took more than 15 minutes real time because of all the time outs, etc. What a tense game, would have been amazing to be there. I'm more nervous than ever about Stanford's date with OSU in two weeks at Gill.

there was an interesting example in last week's louisville-syracuse game. louisville had fouls to give and fouled intentionally, but not excessively, with 2 seconds left ahead by 1, to make syracuse take the ball out of bounds. but the ref called an intentional foul, giving syracuse 2 shots and the ball - and the win. couch jeff walz complained, got a 20k fine and and a rules clarification from the NCAA that, henceforth, fouls committed near the end of a quarter in order to stop play are common fouls (as long as they don't involve excessive contact).

There's a really funny moment during the OSU post-game presser. A reporter asks something that's impossible to hear because again, no one thinks they should mike the reporters, but Rueck answers as if the reporter is asking something about the technical foul he picked up in the 2nd quarter complaining about the officiating. Rueck first says that he shouldn't answer, and then he grins and says "but we don't have a commissioner, so maybe now's my chance!"
I thought the people who were down on OSU after last season were mistaken. Rueck is one of the coaches who can coach a team to over-perform relative to talent and expectations. He seems very happy to have a team that is bought in to what he wants to run. In some ways, this Stanford team feels very similar. Perhaps less talented than some other Stanford teams from the recent past, but playing cohesively, accepting roles, and doing little things that always need to happen for a team to have success.
Fingers crossed for Beers. She looked horrible as she left the court. Couldn't walk without a couple of people holding her up.

It's great to see that rules clarification. I hope it makes it into the next edition of the WBB casebook or even into the main rulebook, as the word "intentional" in the current name of what used to be called "flagrant" is so very misleading.

I'm struggling with whether I'm for OSU or USC in this game. All my emotions are with OSU, the school I was a fan of growing up in Corvallis, and I've never been able to be for USC in anything. But in this case, a win by USC would be good for Stanford, so . . . At any rate, I'm watching, a game that is a real defensive struggle. And I can't help harking back to the ending of the OSU/UCLA game on Thursday, a finish for the ages.

OSU without Beers just could not quite do enough on offense, but their defense would ordinarily have been enough to win. Instead, USC wins 58-50. Juju held to 6-32. The announcers said "they managed to turn her into a jump shooter with a hand in her face." Sound familiar? We did that too, but she hit all her jumpers even when she did have hands in her face. I'm beginning to think that her performance against us was a case of a superwoman moment rather than something deficient in our scheme.
In any case, we now have a 2 game lead on 3 teams that are tied for second place: OSU, USC, and Colorado. UCLA is playing Oregon but even if it wins it will be tied with Utah for 5th place.
