Thanks, it doesn't appear to be on tv so cannot DVR it. Will try to catch what parts I can online.

Re: Spring practice thread - Papa John - 04-14-2017

According to pac-12.com, the "national" Pac-12 network will air the Stanford spring game at 7:30 pm. It looks like only Pac-12 Bay Area is showing the SG live at 1 pm.

Re: Spring practice thread - OutsiderFan - 04-14-2017

Whatever network it is on, I sure hope someone puts it on YouTube.

Thanks, will recheck my cable guide when I get home. For some reason, I thought today was Saturday. #Iwish  :P

Re: Spring practice thread - donkey687 - 04-14-2017

St. Brown and Wedington will play if they are as good as advertised. They play positions where we play multiple people and we don't have an abundance of proven returning talent in RB and WR so they should see the field. They are also the positions where freshman tend to play the earliest and make the biggest impact.  I don't think any of our elite WRs or RBs over the last decade redshirted.  Didn't Gerhart, Gaffney, Taylor, CMAC, Love all play as true frosh? Same thing with Ty, Owusu, Irwin, Whalen? Not sure about Baldwin.  I could argue that if you don't play RB as a true frosh, you aren't likely going to be that good because elite playmaking talent is obvious.

Re: Spring practice thread - Goose - 04-14-2017

I think you are probably correct about running backs, in that all the "good" ones got some touches as a freshman. In all cases except Toby, I would argue they were not "primary" choices. Certainly CMAC was not, as a freshman. At receiver, I think it is less clear. For instance, Whalen played in exactly one game as a freshman, where he received exactly 0 passes. Chris Owusu started 5 games as a freshman. He recorded 5 receptions for 80 yards, and 0 touchdowns, but he also got injured. Francis Owusu caught exactly two passes for 1 touchdown and 56 yards, all against Cal. He was also the ONLY freshman to play in 2013. Baldwin, OTOH played in 12 games, where he received 11 passes for 0 TDs. Certainly these four freshman years were not "game breakers", and did not reflect the eventual value of the players. Now, that doesn't mean it can't happen, Probably, it won't. Expecting it is a bit much.

Re: Spring practice thread - Stymie - 04-15-2017

As I see it from afar, we are weak in wide receivers (Irwin and A-W OK but not world class--back ups iffy but possibly good) iffy vis a vis both QBs (but hopefully very good if Burns stays on the bench) and iffy on the OL (but enough talent there (including frosh studs) to do the job).  The key?  World Class Tight Ends (remember 2011-12?).  Schulz is ready for a breakout.  Smith is a stud if healthy.  Harrington is good and Parkinson is a stud in waiting.

Let the opponents clog up the middle of the line if we try to run there, but if they commit their LBs there, the receiving middle is wide open for us.  If they back up to protect the receiving middle, our RBs are good enough to penetrate, and our WRs are one on one for the pattern routes.

I'm really looking forward to the Fall.

Re: Spring practice thread - OutsiderFan - 04-15-2017

I don't know why nobody is mentioning Donald Stewart as a WR who can make an impact.

Irwin, JJAW, Stewart, Tyler, and St. Brown are the guys I expect to contribute at WR this season.  But, when you have Schultz, Smith, Harrington, and Parkinson at TE, you're not going to be playing too many 4 and 5 WR sets.  Particularly Smith and Parkinson are TEs you can split out wide too.

Re: Spring practice thread - Goose - 04-15-2017

I rate Irwin and JJAW higher than Stymie does. Irwin catches everything he can reach and runs very good patterns. The expectations for JJAW were not high last year, but he certainly exceeded them. These guys are not weak as wide receivers. What they are not is world-class fast. A more serious issue is that neither Burns or Chryst have shown themselves to be extremely accurate passers that can reliably hit the open man. Burns air-mails everything and Chryst throws it into the ground. OK, that is an overstatement, and certainly lack of protection has been an issue, but I don't have a "good feeling" about the accuracy I have seen from any of the QBs so far. Burns looked great for two games and then things started to slide fast. Chryst was, IMHO, an improvement over the "Colorado" Burns, but even then I never got the feeling that our passing game was "reliable" last year. I agree that Stanford's tight ends can and should make large contributions in the next season. I don't think the key in the passing game is the receivers, wide, tight, or from the backfield. They are indeed "good enough". It is reliably getting the ball to them when they are open from a QB who is not on the ground.

Re: Spring practice thread - Stymie - 04-15-2017

Thanks OF for reminding me of DS, who should be in the mix, as possibly should be I B-S, who can take over the Rector role, IF the long routes can get free and the QB's can hit him.

Agree with you, too, Goose, that Irwin and A-W are good but not great receivers.  If the TE's can show their potential and clean up the safeties, Irwin could easily catch 50+ one on one with the CB's he'll be seeing.

Re: Spring practice thread - needle - 04-15-2017

Donald Stewart is listed at 6'4"; JJAW at 6'3". There's also Paxton Segina, redshirt frosh listed at 6'4".

Irwin is listed at 6'2" (accurate? I'd have guessed shorter), as is Osiris St. Brown.

At least potentially the tallest Stanford receiving corps in my memory (IB-S and Jay Tyler are under 6'). Whether that means anything, I don't know.

Re: Spring practice thread - Hulk01 - 04-15-2017

We're even taller than that.

Kaden Smith basically was a wide receiver in high school.  And Parkinson spent a lot of time flexed out, too; think a taller Coby Fleener, an absurd match up proble,

So we could to choose to run a five wide Ogre receiving group going 6-4, 6-4, 6-5. 6-5, and 6-7.  Couldn't win a 4 x 100, to be sure, but would never lose a jump ball.

Re: Spring practice thread - Spiny_Norman - 04-15-2017

As Stanford gets ready for its spring game (on Pac 12BA at 1 pm), U.SC is too banged up for a full scrimmage.  But they will still charge admission to their final spring practice.

Re: Spring practice thread - Hurlburt88 - 04-15-2017

does anyone recall the 40 speeds for our wide receivers?  Even if it only works a few times, having someone who can stretch the field is an important distraction within the whole team concept.

Re: Spring practice thread - Stymie - 04-15-2017

I B-S is the fastest guy on the track team and beat Rector in the Wash. HS championships in the 100.  He dropped an underthrown pass from Hogan in 2015 and Shaw hardly played him afterwards.

He caught two passes last year for 26 yards.  10.53 100M.

I thought Chryst was initially unimpressive, but showed improvement as he gained more experience. Hopefully he will be fully recovered from his injury and continue that improvement this fall.
Have high hopes for Costello, although I can't say I find his 5-13 performance yesterday particularly encouraging.

Re: Spring practice thread - pcgoode - 04-16-2017

I thought Chryst starting playing well against Oregon (all the usual caveats about not great competition noted). His statistics for that game were impressive, and he threw a number of first rate passes to Rector and JJAW. If we can get that version of Keller back, I think we will be in good shape.

Terrance Alexander's 10.95 100 meters at a recent meet topped IBS, who ran a 10.98. I really don't think IBS is a P12 level football player.
