One of the blessings and curses of Stanford is that you don't need to apply to a specific school.  At the UCs and many/most large institutions you need to apply to the School of Engineering or the College of Letters and Science, etc... Transferring into some majors at a school like Carnegie Mellon can be nearly impossible.

CS106 is now the most popular course at Stanford and many students that are less certain of what to major in are tending towards CS given the proximity to SV and potential marketability after school.  The curse is that it makes it hard for Stanford to plan for where students will want to focus and the shift towards engineering has continued.  I appreciate that Stanford and most of the liberal arts schools don't force a 17/18 year old to pick a specific area of interest, but trying to balance a classes make-up and that classes demands on faculty and university resources can be challenge.

The unsaid motivation behind such moaning and groaning is that there aren't enough junior CS/Engineering majors to depress the wage rates in the valley.  But given the well-known real estate problem in the Bay, wage rates for engineers may never dip low enough to satisfy Silicon Valley HR/finance folks.

Just posted in "Private Discussions" although I'll be the first to point out there isn't much meat there.

A decent argument could be made that Stanford has the most fair and transparent admissions policy of any top school in America.  And a better than decent argument could be made that the quality of the Stanford undergraduate student body has gotten stronger (relatively and absolutely), especially in the last decade or so.
