They ought to see if he can play safety.

Chaffin is part of a whole-sale swap of linemen for short yardage situations. That's also where Henry Hattis got playing time. I think I remember Powell at guard in this platoon, but am less sure of that part.
At any rate, I don't think Dalman not playing but Powell and Chaffin getting into the game means that Dalman is behind either for the backup center spot.

He started at guard against Oregon. He seems to be highly regarded at that position, too. Zero snaps?

Changes noted:
- Bryce Love off injured list, marked as starter at RB. It will be interesting to see how much Trevor Speights and Cam Scarlett play in order to keep Love healthy.
- Devery Hamilton marked as starter over Brandon Fanaika at LG. Even with the "or" notation on the depth chart, the first name tends to be favored. This is interesting given that Fanaika was the starter last game over a "healthy" Hamilton. We'll see.
- Casey Toohill off injured list, marked as starter at OLB. Jordan Fox returns to backup role after filling in pretty well.
Other notes:
- Foster Sarell (OT/OG), Connor Wedington (WR), Curtis Robinson (OLB), and Ben Edwards (S) all still injured. Interestingly, all four played as true freshmen. I think, for this reason, it is intentional that the staff is being extra cautious with these four. As the games go by, there is an increasing chance that any of these four will eventually claim a redshirt for this year, barring exodus for the NFL. Robinson has played in zero games, Wedington one, Sarell two, and Edwards three. According to the new rule, as a freshman, you burn your shirt after appearing in your fifth game. But if you are not a freshman, you can apply for a medical redshirt for a past season when your eligibility is used up. This request is almost always granted if you played in less than five games (according to the new rule) rather than four (old rule). Sean Barton will have that option, too, should he so choose.

Updates:
- OLB Joey Alfieri (OLB) marked as injured, Jordan Fox as starter.
- LG Devery Hamilton replaced by Brandon Fanaika as starter. Just going by who was listed first on the depth chart, though it was officially an "or." Nine times (Mr. Beuller) out of ten, the name in front of the "or" is the starter.
- RG Nate HeBIG remains marked as starter. I should have marked him injured last week, but did not know he would not play until the game started. Sorry about that. Drew Dalman started in his place, which makes Dalman's lack of play against Utah weird. Injury, maybe.
- CB Kendall Williamson played in his fourth true frosh game against ASU. If he plays this week, his redshirt is toasty.
- I was tempted to mark QB Davis Mills as injured, but he is still listed as QB2 on the depth chart. Since there are no official injury reports, I'm guessing here. I am sure there are plenty of times that players are inactive due to injury but we never find out about it. For instance, I'm pretty sure IBS has not played this year for that reason, but there has been no official word.
- Foster Sarell (OT/OG), Connor Wedington (WR), Curtis Robinson (OLB), and Ben Edwards (S) all still injured. Robinson has played in zero games, Wedington one, Sarell two, and Edwards three. As all three played as true frosh, redshirt chances increase with each passing game.
I am actually down here at Stanford now (just flew in from Seattle this morning) for Reunion Weekend -- my 25th reunion. Still not sure if I am going to the game or not; may get a ticket from a scalper. But will definitely be at the tailgate. I'll be the middle-aged guy wearing red who looks like he could have been a Stanford student when he was younger. If you see me, come say hello. :)

On the GoStanford SoundCloud channel Shaw talked about Dalman having many qualities, including being a fighter and very smart, but at this point still can still get "out weight-roomed". So maybe with Utah's guys being unusually muscular, fit, and well-coached Dalman was less likely to play.

RE: 2018 Stanford Football Personnel -
Langdude - 10-28-2018
Notes:
- Marked LG Nate Herbig as injured. Against WSU, Devery Hamilton started in his place.
- Interestingly, Jordan Fox and Gabe Reid were the starters at OLB. However, Stanford started in their nickel package. Have to believe that Casey Toohill is still the starter in the base package. However, given that we were in nickel basically all the time against the Cougs, not sure how much Toohill played (he did play some), which is a shame as he's been really good this season when healthy. However, I've been happy with Fox and Reid as well.
- Great insight above, CC, regarding Drew Dalman. He did play last night, but was not the starter at either guard, even with Herbig out.
- Ben Brandon Simmons did not play. We really could have used him.
- None of the four notable wounded (Sarell, Wedington, Edwards, Robinson) played, either.
- Congratulations to Kendall Williamson, whose redshirt was officially burned last night! Scholie year switched accordingly.

Agreed, the young Philadelphia 76ers phenom would've indeed been a welcome (and very surprising) addition to the team.
Brandon Simmons must be hurt.

Assuming Stanford wins another game and makes a bowl, but doesn't make the Pac-12 championship, that leaves 5 remaining games (UW, OSU, Cal, UCLA, bowl). Wedington can play in 3 more games and still redshirt; Robinson 4. How would people propose we manage the situation?

Great question But I’ll
Wait to see how much they play.

Notes:
- Well, we are getting a feeling for the accuracy of the Tuesday depth charts, which is to say that they are not accurate at all. We've had starters announced that do not play (e.g., Nate Herbig), and players declared out due to injury that end up starting (e.g., Casey Toohill). So I'm not going to put much stock in them. Having said that...
- OG Nate Herbig is marked as starter; Devery Hamilton started in his place at RG last week. Brandon Fanaika continues to start at LG.
- JJAW is out. True sophomore WR Connor Wedington is back from injury, and played in his second game of the year last week. He is marked as starter opposite Trent Irwin. It looks like coaches may not be interested in redshirting C-Dub this year.
- Last week against UW, true freshman DE Thomas Booker started in place of Jovan Swann. Now, I acknowledge that this may be a schematic thing (i.e., that Booker perhaps plays DE over Swann in passing downs), but it is nonetheless reeeeally interesting, and accords to my assessment that Dylan Jackson has been the best player on the DL (for what little that may be worth). On the depth chart, Swann is marked as starter again, but let's keep an eye on this.
- True freshman DL Andres Fox played last week, marking his second game played. We'll see...
- OLB Joey Alfieri still out; Jordan Fox (who has been mostly great) starts.
- OLB true junior Curtis Robinson returned from injury last week, playing in his second game of the year.
- DE Thomas Schaffer played!
- OG/OT Foster Sarell, S Ben Edwards, S Brandon Simmons, PK Jet Toner out.
- This Saturday is senior day, so it will be interesting to see what academic seniors choose to be announced.

According to Shaw JJ is being announced. No way he comes back. Biggest question is whether Ben Edwards comes back at probably the weakest position on the roster.

Really doubt Shaffer played.
The published depth chart is made public but it’s for the press at the press conference. Then Shaw elaborates at the press conference
Please don’t confuse the two. :)
JJ leaving Kaden leaving maybe Herbig leaving probably a couple of OL grad transfer
RE: 2018 Stanford Football Personnel -
BostonCard - 11-08-2018
Chafin and Wilson are the only two offensive linemen with a chance at grad transferring. Since Fanaika, Burkett, and possibly (likely?) Herbig gone, were Chafin and Wilson to grad transfer, we would have Hamilton and ? at Guard, Dalman with no real back-up at Canter, and Sarrell and Little with a ? backing them up at tackle. The true frosh better be ready to play, or we better hope that whatever injury bug ate us up this year doesn't strike again, especially because all of the key guys (Hamilton, Little, Sarrell) have been injured at some point this year.
As I said some time ago in a post, it will get worse before it gets better.
