Team standings for positions 5 to 8:
5. Arizona +25
6. Stanford +28
7. Wake Forest +31
8. Auburn +32
9. Purdue +33
9. Northwestern +33

Auburn, Purdue and NW basically have to play the full front nine.  The chance they make it through there, late in day, without picking more strokes probably makes our position pretty good unless we totally fall apart.  Always possible in golf, but we lead them, and have about half the holes left to play they do.  Cross your fingers.!

It will be close, but I think they can complete play today. Need about 2 1/2 hours of daylight since some players still have 9 holes remaining. Sunset in Fayetteville is 8:20 pm.

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-20-2019

Stanford getting some help as Auburn, Northwestern and Purdue have posted some big numbers at the start of their 2nd 9. Hole #1 killed them.  Auburn +6, Purdue +5, Northwestern +9 on that hole alone.

Current standings:
4. Arkansas +25
4. Arizona +25
6. Stanford +29
7. Wake Forest +32
8. Auburn +36
9. Purdue +37
9. Northwestern +38

Valenzuela rolls in a short birdie on 15 and Stanford's position in 6th gets even more solid with 3 holes remaining. Now 11 shots between Stanford and the 9th place team.

If someone told me we would be in this thing with Andrea +7 on the day I would think maybe they had one too many.

I am including all of the top teams now so you can start to get a view of seeding and how the pairings might come out for the quarterfinals. 1 will play 8, 2 plays 7, etc. Still plenty of golf remaining today.

1. Texas +8
2. Duke +11
3. USC +15
4. Arkansas +25
5. Arizona +28
6. Stanford +29
7. Wake Forest +30
8. Auburn +37
9. Purdue +39

Starting to look good to make the top-8 with a 10 stroke cushion over the 9th place team (Purdue) with the team having only a hole on average to play.  We should wind up somewhere between 5th and 7th place (we are one stroke behind Arizona and one stroke ahead of Wake Forest).

The choke is on at the cut line.
Auburn has gone eight over halfway through the front;
Purdue has gone 14 over;
and Northwestern went nine over par on the first and is 19 over so far on the front.
Each of three teams has played a team total of just 17 holes.
41 over for 51 total holes.

Who would you rather see us paired with tomorrow?  A difficult choice.
U$C is a very good team, would rather see us play them later, maybe for the championship.  But then, they are all good teams.
Now we would be playing Duke, another of my favorite schools.
Wake and Arizona have about same number of holes, we could move up, but unlikely to move down.

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - BostonCard - 05-20-2019

No good options... Arkansas is the lowest ranked of the teams at 2-4, but of course it is the host.  It will be a tough pairing no matter who we play, but match play is so unpredictable!  Kudos to the ladies just to make Hulk eat crow and make it to the match play portion.

BC

By the way, talk about a team really benefiting from the dropped score.  Wake is +4 for the day, with the following scores: +1, +2, +1, E... and +11.

During yesterday's round, all 5 of Duke's players broke par. That's pretty stout. But all of the stroke play results get thrown out and everyone is even when match play begins. No one has more NCAA match play experience than Stanford.

I’m changing the subject here — but whenever I think of match play I think of the National Amateur men’s final when Tiger won it — who was he playing against? I have no memory of that, but boy was it a great match to watch.

Of the top three teams, the one we'd most like to face is Duke.

They're significantly weaker than Texas and SC in spots two and three.

I'd be startled if a team other than top three ends up winning in match play;
they're dramatically stronger than the other five teams.

Nancy, I think you are remembering this match - https://www.si.com/vault/1994/09/05/131934/the-comeback-kid-tiger-woods-won-the-us-amateur-in-dramatic-history-making-fashion

Also, none of Duke's players broke par today.  Sometimes you're the windshield; sometimes you're the bug.

Using today's scores and straight up match-ups, neither of which would happen tomorrow here's what a hypothetical match-play matchup between Stanford and Duke would have looked like:
Lee would probably lose to Boonchant (Boonchant would be 2-up through 13).
Valenzuela and Kim would be all-square through 15
Krauter would have beaten Belac 6&5
Wang would probably lose to Elena Karta (Elena Carta would be 1-up through 16)
Liu would be leading (+1 through 14)

We are in the clubhouse at +30, 10-over today.  We will finish no better than 7th barring an epic collapse in front of us.  We are five strokes ahead of Auburn for 7th place, who is still on, but Illinois and Florida both finished outside the top 8, so barring a miracle finish by Northwestern or Purdue, we are in to the match play round.

So what's the story with Andrea Lee?

Does she need to move the change to her other pocket, tie her left shoe in a double knot and turn her hat backwards??

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-20-2019

I really hope the current standings hold up. Would be glad to be in the opposite bracket from Texas. Love the Arkansas-Wake Forest match with a possible Arkansas-Texas match to follow.

USC would face familiar foe Arizona. Stanford vs. Duke in the other half of that bracket. Bring it on.

On one side of the bracket, you would have 4 of the pedigree teams in women's college golf. Duke has won 6 NCs; USC and Arizona have won 3 each; Stanford has one and has advanced to match play each of the past 5 years.

On the other side of the bracket, none of the 4 teams (Texas, Arkansas, Wake Forest, Auburn) has won a national championship. In fact, no school from the Big 8/Big 12 has ever won this tournament.

I don't care who they play tomorrow. If they don't play better - especially Lee - they will be one and done.

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-20-2019

Play was stopped today with 2 holes remaining. They will re-start at 6:45 am local time, hoping to be done by 7:15 am with pairings for quarterfinals shortly thereafter. By the time we start our day on the west coast, we should know the pairings for Stanford in the quarterfinals.

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - BostonCard - 05-20-2019

Are there any realistic circumstances in which we finish anything other than 7th and play anyone other than Duke?

BC

Yeah, our matchup will be with Duke unless USC’s Garvey hits a hole-in-one on the par 4 18th.
