Williams makes a desperation heave that hits the rim, Haley gets the offensive rebound but is under the basket without a shot, so she dribbles out a step and makes a blind reverse layup over her right shoulder. She missed the free throw that would have made it a three point play, but there ought to have been a panel of judges awarding her extra points for that circus shot.
Haley Jones is young and raw, but her offensive creativity is everywhere to be seen. It is going to be a special four years to watch her.
We did not need her scoring prowess in our three blowout victories, but in the third quarter, when we were struggling offensively with cold shooting and a disjointed offense, I was thinking that Haley needed to show why she was the #1 recruit in the country and create her own offense and she did just that.
Kiana and Lexie might have finished with more points, but it was Haley's baskets, particularly that amazing shot you described, that kept us in the game.
Also, the missed free throw led to an offensive rebound, which eventually led to a score, for a four point possession. Had she not missed the foul, we likely would have lost in regulation by one point (all else being equal).

I started going through my photos from the Gonzaga game. I didn't take many, but I thought this one was the most interesting. This was the blocking call on Dijonai right at the beginning of the game. I don't remember who made the call.

While I understand everyone's feelings about Missy, Kyle is no picnic either and the other ref. Oh my was she awful. She barely blew her whistle, but when she did she was mostly wrong in her call. One thing I noticed about Missy this game is that she appears to try to make up for other refs not seeing a foul. She pretty consistently makes calls that she doesn't have a good view of. My thought is she thinks the other refs are bad and don't see or call a foul so she needs to call it. This leads to a number of bad calls on her part. I had a boys high school coach sitting next to me and he couldn't believe how bad the officiating was.

Great photo, thanks so much for posting! I'm an out-of-town fan and my chances to see the team are pretty much limited to TV, or else, God forbid, the internet feed, which is the original "lame-stream medium."
What struck me in that photo was the demographic of the fans in the background. Literally 90% are gray-hairs (like me). It's hard to see where growth in attendance is going to come from.

Thanks. Here are the photos from the Team USA game, you might enjoy them too -

Yes, the crowd is on the grey and silver side for sure. (me too) My daughter, who is in her 20's, really enjoys going to games. Even though she never played basketball we started going to games when she was in elementary school and now have season tickets.

The officiating we had vs Gonzaga is a big turnoff for fans. Who wants to sit and watch Missy strut around wasting our time or Kyle Bacon blowing calls? One thing that perpetually bothers me about WCBB is that officiating rewards play that is not what I would call good. Someone boxes out, grabs a rebound, and then everyone starts slapping at the ball. Boxing out, jumping for a rebound, securing it with two hands, that is all good play that should be rewarded and protected by the officials. Standing there while someone on the other team does all that and than trying to slap at the ball is not exactly what I would call good basketball, yet that is how almost every rebound goes in WCBB. I watch men's teams and for the most part when someone gets a rebound, the other team doesn't stand around slapping at it. Yeah, we needed to secure the ball better, but gotta think a lot of the slap the ball and off it goes plays also are fouls that are not called.
I would like to see WCBB have a rule that when someone secures a rebound, defined by feet back on the ground, ball in two hands, the other team can't hack at the ball right away, like have a one or two second "no hack" rule unless the player with the ball makes a basketball move like tries to dribble, pass or shoot. Too much of the game is a mosh pit of pushing and hacking.

Thanks! It was helpful to see the Carrington "foul" close up. From my seat in the section above our player's bench, it wasn’t clearly visible. DiJonai's stance is picture perfect, but I would need to see the video of the play to verify that her heel was not on the line before determining that it was a bad call.

Sadly, the Youtube video of the game is missing the first couple of minutes and Dijonai's blocking foul. Such an odd video--almost the whole game, but a few critical pieces missing.
In the photograph, it looks to me as if Carrington's right heel is on or over the restricted area line. What is the rule? If any part of the defender is in the restricted area does that mean it cannot be a charge?

Ah... the Achilles Heel cost her.
Quote:"A secondary defender is considered to be in the restricted area when any part of either foot is in or above this area."
"Art. 1. A secondary defender is a teammate who has helped a primary defender
after that player has been beaten by an opponent because she failed to establish
or maintain a guarding position. A defensive player is beaten when the offensive
player’s head and shoulders get past the defender. There are no secondary
defenders when the offensive player with the ball is within the lower defensive
box when she starts her move to the basket.
Art. 2. In a fast-break situation, any defensive player(s) initially shall be a
secondary defender."
I wasn't yet there for the play, but it does appear to be a fast break.
Her heel appears to be above the line.
Do you see the (near) contradiction that can happen? Consider a fast-break, and the lead offensive player
dishes to another offensive player in the lower defensive box, and a defender
establishes a guarding position on that 2nd offensive player within the restricted area
before the offensive player runs into her.
(My belief is that the word "initially" allows the charge to be called. Only a Missy
would know the difference, and she'd get booed for her call.)
It is interesting to see how the demographics vary by the sections. Kids tend to come in groups and so sit up in the upper sections. Stanford students sit (mostly) on the sidelines. People earning lots of money buy lower section seats (sideline). People that have been season ticket holders for many years also sit in the lower sideline sections. We skinflints have been sitting in the upper sections for decades.
