Girls realize that sports is only opening a door but don't get sucked into the idea they could make millions on their athletics so they still need to work/study. So there is a lot more intersection of top female athletes focused on also achieving in academics than boy athletes. So while there is variability, it seems like there is almost always some strong cohort of girls who are killing it on the field and in the classroom. A gross generalization, but I wonder if there's data to back it up.

I think you are right.   But we also have another problem in this country--the academic achievement for boys is simply lower across the board than for girls--sports related or not.  Something we are doing with our young people is not working for boys.  GPAs, graduation rates, AP tests, etc. girls generally have higher scores than boys.  Lots of possible reasons for this that might be interesting to speculate about--there probably is a lot of research going on at CERAS about this very point.

How many women Stanford grads are now playing a pro sports. I’ll go 40. Just saying and no none making millions

I think your point about the low pay, Bob, reinforces FarmBoy's point.  When women go pro in sports they know their first contract won't set them up for life.  They know they will need a second career after their day in sports are over.  With only a couple of exceptions, they can't afford to neglect their education since they all know they will have to rely on it--immediately if they don't go pro--or otherwise after a few years.

For example, last year's #1 WNBA pick, Jackie Young, will earn $53,537.

RE: Women’s volleyball on to the final four - Farm93 - 12-16-2019

Lots of different sociological, psychological, economic and demographic forces at play for women vs men participation rates in sports in HS and college.  Thankfully they all work together to enable Stanford to sustain elite status in several women's sports.  Some of those same forces also help Stanford sustain excellence in some men's sports, but certainly not all.

Football is one where many of the forces work against Stanford.   And the trends are not favorable going forward BTW.  The recent decline in HS football participation is not uniform.  In most cases the greatest declines are in areas that should impact Stanford more than the average P5 program.

FWIW - I have been to those (Insert Sponsor Name) (Insert Town Seeking Winter Tourism) Bowls.   A women's volleyball Final Four is a lot better than those bowls.  Anyone within a 5 hour drive of Pittsburgh should seriously consider going and supporting the team, our school, and the sport.

FWIW2 - I fully expect loads of Wisconsin and Minnesota fans to find their way to the arena.

Katie Ledecky perhaps? How about Kerri Walsh-Jennings. . . .

RE: Women’s volleyball on to the final four - BostonCard - 12-16-2019

Not to mention a fair number of women in the WNBA.  This list is a bit dated, but still

Not sure how lucrative women's hoops is, but not sure if those listed made millions off their sport. . . .

Sorry, I misread your reply to Bob; I didn't realize you were addressing specifically whether any made millions.  But yes, Ledecky has sponsorship worth millions.

Walsh's career earnings were $2.5 million

Walsh grossed $2.5 million but that was over a 17 year career.
Chiney may be worth $2 million but the WNBA is paying her $119,500.  The top 30 men in the NBA all earn more than $30 million a year.
Ledecky is the best example of a female athlete who rivals some of the men for earnings.

The point is that almost no female athletes are delusional when they enter college into thinking that their college education is superfluous because of high earnings potentials in their sports.  A surprising number of men are.  And such men don't wind up at Stanford, since our biggest draw is the quality of the degree.

We are the university for bright, non-delusional athletes :P

Walsh is still trying to sell me therapy tape, and unfortunately, my 12 year old is buying (if only for a week or two with a sore knee). It's the endorsements, not the earnings, that make the money. With regards to your last comment, that's the Ivies. . . .

Mostly correct. However, we do get many guys who are highly recruited, 4* or better, that think they have a place in the NFL. Some do, most don't. Fortunately those that don't usually have the degree to "fall back on". We have had a few that left without the degree to go into the NFL draft with less-than-great results. So, while some of our athletes may be "delusional", it usually comes out well anyway. Part of the 40 year benefit.

I should have counted total income. For instance Kelly O’Hara has a net worth of $2M

When Bowlsby was athletics director at Stanford, I once heard him sum it up succinctly: he said, Stanford will always excel at the country club sports. The other sports are tougher.

I've never been to a country club that had volleyball ... or soccer.

Have been to at least one that had a gym with folks playing (small-court) basketball.

He must have meant XC often running on golf courses lol

The irony, of course, is that perhaps the quintessential country club sport - squash - is one of the few for which we've never won a national championship.

Squash at country clubs? Maybe work out gyms, but not many at country clubs that I've scene. Golf and tennis certainly. Swimming perhaps once, but certainly not anymore.

LOL.  What about horse polo?  Does that count as part of "equestrian" sports?

I haven't read up on it recently, but I remember articles on the WNBA basically saying the players all make their money over seas (stories about teams owned by Russian oil barons throwing money at players and part of the job is to hang out with the owners. Nothing lascivious was implied in what I read). Playing in the WNBA has an opportunity cost but the players want to cultivate the US game and fan base and of course are happy to be in a country where they speak the language.

Throughout the season, announcers have mentioned multiple times that KP is graduating this term so she can pursue her professional volleyball career. I don't know how lucrative women's volleyball is, but I'd bet it tops out at a couple hundred K per year.

RE: Women’s volleyball on to the final four - BobK - 12-17-2019

What you are referring to Farm Boy is in the past. Several players made $ 1M playig in Russia and spoke about it at Stanford maybe 8-10 years ago.

I would guess we have about 20 WBB and WVB grads playing overseas at any point. Or maybe over the last 3 years.
