Really savvy move on the AD's part to pair the retirement announcement with the head coach announcement, and to keep the entire thing leak-free as they negotiated it.

I'm guessing that Tara is really interested in her. And IMHO, she'd be a good choice -- the Stanford connection, as well as the right personality (which I always wondered about re Lindy. She just didn't strike me as a person who would energize the players, though I could be all wrong on that, influenced by her flat affect with fans at chalk talks. I'm wondering how she's going to do at UNLV, but we'll see)

Definitely a savvy move, may help keep rumors and speculation down. But still, one has to wonder. And what's going to happen with her recruits? Will they stay, or be looking to move elsewhere? Maybe with Ivey there, they'll stick around.

My guess is recruits stay, and could make them more competitive for 2021 recruits since Ivey was key recruiter. Also MM's reaction to Ivey's departure had been that it would be good experience for her to make her even better were she to return when MM retires...got to wonder if Verhulst stays w Louisville decision (they are cutting coaches' salaries etc.)...

Lindy has filled her staff at Vegas with two new coaches and one holder offer. She has also made at lest four player offers.
A friend who has interviewed thought her very outgoing

2 part-answer:
1) What I observed - I always noticed that Karlie was a leader. During team huddles, I noticed she was usually the one speaking. I also liked her demeanor. You would see her full of exhilaration and joy, with a brobdingnagian smile, when things went well, and disappointed, but not over emotional, when she lost.
2) What I read: Many posters have written that Tara thought she'd be a good coach some day. I can see it and believe it.
3) Intangible: She was nice enough to take a photo with me during the football Spring Game some years ago and She reminds me of a big Stanford crush I had. (OK, A 3-Part answer)

Tara gave several interviews and talks when Karlie was a player in which she said Karlie was like having a coach out on the floor, saying she had a high basketball IQ, etc. That is my sole basis for thinking Karlie might be a good coach.

Karlie has some experience coaching at Vanguard U, in Orange County. Russ Davis is the coach there. Davis also coaches Cal Swish/AAU, which runs some of the best basketball sets at the AAU level. Coming to Stanford from Cal Swish--Karlie and Bonnie Samuelson, Jeanete Pohlen, Candace Wiggins, and some others.

Karlie is 1 of my favorite players but she was the 4th assistant coach, few teams, if any, have 4. Her tenure was from 1/18 to 5/18 at an NAIA school. I'm just assuming that Tara needs a coach that is experienced and NCAA accredited for recruiting, etc

1. I think the university is under a hiring freeze that includes this position, per something Tara said during the virtual presentation.
2. Even if the hiring freeze abates, or this position is exempted from it, I can see a universe where the coaching vacancy remains until there's more clarity as to whether or not there will be a season in the fall. Tara is very loyal and I suspect she'd rather save money by leaving the position vacant than have to furlough staff or put them on reduced salary. Maybe I'm just projecting, but that's exactly what I'd do if I were in her shoes. 3% unemployment rate or 30% unemployment rate, Tara will never have a shortage of well qualified candidates eager to work under her and coach at the Farm.

Yes, Karlie does have a bit of experience as a coach, but it is very limited. But I still think she could be a good fit with the team of coaches that Tara has. Both her Associate Head coach (Kate) and #1 assistant have been with her for many years and are themselves very experienced. Having them there seems to me to make it possible to bring in an inexperienced coach and make it work.

I gather I must be the only person on the Board who believes that the team and coaching staff would actually be improved by bringing in someone who comes from a different "coaching tree" and would bring in different and new ideas.

No, it's just that folks love Karlie and other ex-players they already know. Someone with fresh ideas would be great.
