As a leader, tell your followers to do as you say, not as you do.
Ironic that in another thread, we are urged to evaluate Trump's performance by not paying attention to what he says, what's important is what he does.

There was an update from Ford earlier today walking it back. Trump has managed to make mask wearing political. His small mind can't fathom appearing weak by wearing a mask at this point.

If Trump is on official duty, the state law would not apply to him. However, best practice for any Federal entity is to follow local law and custom to the extent that it can be done without breaking federal law or compromising the mission. Good rule of thumb is, don't be an A-hole if there's any way to avoid it.

Sovereign immunity. Unless the Federal government says that local laws will apply to it, they don't. There are lots of laws that waive sovereign immunity, such as Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act. In the absence of such waiver, local laws cannot be applied to the Federal government. This includes officials of the Federal government acting in their official capacity. It does not include officials of the federal government acting in their personal capacity. For example, it would not apply to the private business dealings of a Government Official, no matter how high they may be.

Interesting hypothetical question. If Trump does go to the Ford plant and doesn't wear a mask, and the Michigan AG wanted to be a jerk, could she charge Ford with a violation? After all, many of the health directives would apply to businesses and Ford doesn't enjoy sovereign immunity.

That is an interesting question. It's a common tactic to go after the private party host. My guess is that the Feds and Ford would find some government contract that Ford is working on and claim that the whole trip was a site inspection under that contract and claim the prosecution is interfering with a Federal contract. The problem with that argument is that almost all Federal contracts have a provision requiring the contractor to comply with all laws and regulations. It's not like the reasonable person would think the requirement for masks actually interferes with performance under a Federal contract. Worth a shot for an AG that wants to make a point.

Currently under legal contest: whether Trump (and AOC for that matter) may block Twitter users that they dislike. Twitter is a private platform, but is temporarily public if a government official uses it to express official views. Trump's view (and presumably AOC's view) is that he is sharing his private opinions, hence, his opinions are protected free speech. Others feel differently.

The DOJ considers Trump's tweets to be official presidential statements. Trump's (and AOC's) tweets may be protected speech. But I don't see how that gives him or AOC the right to block others, who share the right to restrict others from exercising their rights to petition the government.
