RE: WBB: Stanford 81 Arizona 54 -

We hit the 50 rebound mark again, and kept the opponent to 61 points or under. I expect Tara, in between the coaching moments, is pointing out to the team that defense is a team sport and that each & every one of them is responsible for that.
We pulled down 12 of the 30 rebounds under our basket. 40% is a very impressive number. We got 39 of 53 under their basket, a respectable number at 74% but not dominating.
4 players with 8+ rebounds; 5 with 9+ points; only 2 players with 3 fouls; Only 1 player with more than 27 minutes. Even the turnovers were spread out. I take it as a good sign that Kiana only took 6 shots in 32 minutes. Cameron's 5 blocks is notable, but the rest of our teams out-blocked Arizona (4-3).
I do feel we kept our best players in longer than we might have, but only Kiana was in for more then 2/3 of the game, but Alyssa, Jana, and Agnes got only 5 minutes or less. But, we were playing a good team and it is good for starters to have more time against good opponents.
From Arizona's point of view, did they have excuses? Did we not see their best for some reason? Players not there? No practice time?
Tough to have a strategy against Stanford. Few teams can match up in a high scoring match; few teams can match up in a slow, defensive match. A team with two bigs might disrupt our rebounding. Pair that with, say, three 3-point shooters, and Stanford could have trouble in a high scoring match. I think a good, big post could get Brink into foul trouble.
I'm impressed that McDonald had a bad night shooting. Whether the issue was that her defenders kept up with her enough that she had fewer good looks, or whether she felt she had to do more of the offense as no one else was open much, it probably was Stanford defense, not a lid on the basket.
Have we heard more about the 4 coaches & assistants that were not there? I didn't see Kate or the trainer, but I didn't study the sideline shots. As this is the first game after Christmas, maybe some are quarantining after visiting family, or SCC or California, without having known exposure.

If anyone wants to see what the UA coach and players thought about the game:

I enjoyed hearing their perspective. Very easy to root for them. Barnes has always struck me as a straight shooter, seems nice, and the players as well.

Any thoughts on how close Kiana is to 100%? I didn't see her guard McDonald once (though everyone else was fantastic, so her defense was not deeded) and she did not attack the basket with her usual relentless ferocity. I'm guessing 85%. Thankfully, this team has so many weapons, she can be a role player in some games.

Thanks for the link - very interesting (and I agree about the 'Cats being easy to root for after seeing that). Was Thomas ever on Stanford's radar? I was impressed with her play on the court, and her interview was fantastic.

I believe the broadcast said that AZ was the only Pac12 school that tried to recruit her.

No Thomas not on Stanford’s radar. Ranked # 95 so hard to understand why not more heavily recruited

Barnes is a class act to be sure. But I will root for Arizona exactly as much as they rooted for us after they beat us last year. Zip. zero. Nada

As I saw it, I understood one ref to call it a kicked ball. A half-witted ref might take this rule
Quote:Art. 2. Kicking the ball is striking it intentionally with any part of the leg or the foot Accidentally striking the ball with the foot or leg shall not be a violation
and misinterpret it to mean any TOUCHING of the ball with any part of the leg as "kicking the ball". But the rule is STRIKING it.
Bad call.

I, for one, would like to see the rule changed that awards a free throw to a player that leaps, off-course, into another player while driving for a shot. Aari McDonald does it frequently, so does one of her teammates. The other player that used to do this, ad nauseam, was Kelsey Plum, and, of course, the pros do it and get away with it all the time.
It ought to be a charge. If any player veers off course to cause contact with another player in any other situation on the court, they would be called for a foul. This kind of maneuver cheapens the game in my opinion.

The issue that I think of is who initiates/causes contact, such as the one player being called for a foul because her neck contacted the offensive player's swinging arms. Jumping into another player is an example of that. Another similar rule I'd like to see is banning throwing the ball intentionally into an opponent (whether to bounce the ball out of bounds, to cause in-bounds contact (while inbounding the ball), of to injure a player (one Cal post comes to mind). (You can't hit someone with a chair but there is no specific rule against throwing the ball into a player's face.)
Some notable bad calls I've seen this year: In Friday's game, a female ref made an out-of-bounds call apparently because the heel of one of the Hull twins was above the side line, even though she didn't touch the side line. (Her pivot foot was inside the court. With her heel up, she pivoted and her heel was above the side line, but did not touch anything outside the playing area. "on or above" applies to the circle under the basket and the lower defensive box, but not for out of bounds.)
In other games, I saw two back court calls that were missed. In Saturday's men's game, there was a very long travel (from one side of the lane to the other) that was missed.

FWIW, the WNBA refs were wise to that trick and didn't let Plum get away with it so often after she went pro.

i wondered about that call. unfortunately, looking it up, i find the refs were correct:

"A player may not use any part of his leg to intentionally move or

this is from the nba rulebook. i can't find any comment in the ncaa rules, but i do find

There was a very long travel in our game as well—I'm not sure which player, but one AZ player slid about 3 feet and then put up a shot.

Sorry, but Stanford does not play in the NBA. What the NBA does is irrelevant. I quoted the NCAA rule.

The 27 point win is the largest Stanford road win over a top-six team in program history. That's a couple of important caveats there, but nonetheless quite an achievement for a game that many people are thinking was a bit "meh".
