Not a pretty win.  We succumb to these battles of attrition too much.  Except for that slip, we could have easily lost it on a 2pt + FT.  We did conserve our time outs but I'd rather Tara call one in the middle of our scoreless run and diagram something that works.

But a win.

Glad we didn't blow our #1 seed tonight.  Like BC said, it's a win against a top 15 team.  Gotta love that, even though it aged me way more than 2 hours.

We didn't look like a top 4 team tonight, especially in the 2nd half.......but I think we are. We have shooters, depth, quality in the paint, and a good coach. We will be fine.

ESPN stats only show Brink had 1 block.  I seem to recall her blocking several shots tonight.
If they called 5 fouls on Sabally TONIGHT, imagine how many she really committed.

At times Jones was not good.

It looked like a hockey game broke out in the latter part of the third quarter.  Did the Oregon coach say to his players; "Hey we are not remotely in foul trouble.  Let's mug the Stanford players and see what happens."

Whistles were scarce this game. Part of Oregon's comeback was realizing the officials weren't calling fouls, so they could play a lot higher pressure on defense.

That's not to say we didn't commit uncalled fouls too.

I don't know how it works in basketball.  In volleyball the way sports writers vote in a poll doesn't mean jack to the NCAA selection committee.  Why all the concern about Stanford's AP ranking?

Lacie seems to have the yips from the FT line. She was 20-24 last year and 19-25 freshman year.

Lexie's 3 point shooting has dropped as well from 37.3% her first 2 years to 32.9% this year. But the one she made with about 2 1/2 minutes to play with Stanford down 5 was absolutely critical. The shot of the night as far as I am concerned.

We can’t seem to play 4 quarters using all 8 cylinders.  We typically start the game with confidence, moving, cutting to the basket, making nice passes, taking 3s when available. And our defense is active and effective.  Then somewhere in the 3rd quarter we lose it.  We starting making long lazy passes, then turnovers, we stand around with no more cutting to the basket, and are afraid to take a 3 as the other team starts a comeback.  And things somehow get worse in the 4th quarter.  I wish we could play the 4th quarter with the same intensity and effectiveness as the 1st.

in the espn review after the game, the announcer said, "for most of the game, you could hit somebody with a hammer, and they wouldn't call a foul."

the non-calls worked to oregon's advantage as they were playing rougher - until the final minute. they called nyara sabally for a moving screen. then, kiana shoved paopao a bit just before paopao slipped, and they called the travel on paopao. and at the end they did call the foul on brink's layup.

brink played a lot of minutes and did not look tired.

haley sure had an off game...but...at the very end she dribbled into traffic under the basket, lacie cut to the basket, haley passed it to her, and lacie instantly passed it backhand to brink, who got fouled going up and made the ft's to put us ahead.

i wanted to see anna back in, but lacie had a very interesting final 2 minutes: 2 critical rebounds, missed her 2 free throws, and the highlight-reel assist to brink.

lexie also had a great last half of the 4th quarter: 2/2 from 3 to keep us close.

we were down 4 with 2 min to go. kiana hit a 3 and then a mid-range 2. perfection!

Good question. I think it's a couple of things. One, the AP ranking is mentioned continually by the media in game stories, shown on the onscreen scoreboard, etc. So it's about bragging rights. Second, the committee's decisions when weighing their sources of input are pretty opaque and involve some personal judgment, so people worry that the AP poll may influence the committee.

Not to mention that there are people (present company excepted, I'm sure) who don't know that the AP poll is not one of the inputs that the committee's rules give them to consider. And people who seem to think Charlie Creme is on the committee or speaks for them...

I am not sure who you've been talking to, but though I always want a win, I don't root for a close win. I rather cruise to a blowout than age 30 years on a close game.
