Since you had mentioned that your son is a starter on this team, I am sure you gave him an earful about yesterday's loss. Hard to come back from a long layoff and be back to where you were before it. The fact that they can still score runs at this pace is a good sign. Pitching was always going to be an issue with the shortened fall. Plus some of these new pitchers who are freshman came from their Junior year of HS to the Pac due to missing out on the 2020 season.
Covid did not help, and now these players with have to still stay loose but also be weary of the position they are in due to not getting the U of W series back.
Stanford was never projected to host a regional. I don't think Esquer was banking on that this year. After last years slow start. I am sure getting this team some regional experience is what he was shooting for as the main goal for this team.
No I did not give him an earful, even though he blamed himself for the loss. Baseball is hard. All you can do is try your best. But our best has to be better. In all phases.

From your mouth to the team's ears, Baseballjunkie. The rebound starts at 6 pm at Dedeaux Field. The good news is that USC's projected starters Friday through Sunday have ERAs of 3.02, 5.80 and 5.23, so I expect that Stanford's above-average offense will score plenty of runs. The bad news is that Stanford's projected starters have ERAs of 3.78 (Beck), 5.10 (Mathews) and 9.00 (Williams).
USC is 6-9 in conference with series losses that include 1-2 vs UCLA, 1-2 at Cal, 1-2 vs Oregon and being swept at Arizona. They did manage to sweep UW. Overall, USC is riding a 4-game losing streak.

Well, that's more like it! On a night when runs were hard to come by, Esquer put Barrera in to pinch hit for Huff (in front of his SoCal. family, I imagine), with the score tied at 2 in the top of the tenth. Barrera promptly launched the first pitch over the fence for a 3-run homer and the winning margin. Also, kudos to the bullpen for throwing four scoreless innings while only allowing one hit. Grech with yet another save.

Disappointing loss to the Trojans, but still nice to keep our series win streak alive and the pitching and defense were solid.
Time to rest up for the big series next weekend versus #8 RPI Arizona.

Stanford has won every weekend series this year (nine so far), which traditionally has been something Baseball America has given significant weight, i.e. winning weekend series more important than overall record.
Stanford has had some trouble completing the sweep. Dropping this final series game was a little painful as Brueser's shot in the top of the seventh sure looked like it bounced off the score board to me (i.e. should have been a home run). Hard to be certain with no replays.

Baseball is hard.
The players know how hard it is. They need support from one another and from us in good times and bad, because it's not like other sports. Failure is more commonplace in baseball and, what's worse, you have time to dwell on it.
My kid just went through a stretch where he was the worst player on the field. As a dad, I'm helpless. I can't carry his burden. He's bewildered. How can this be happening? Baseball provides thrills but the lows are SO LOW.
I have occasionally come on here saying we need to be better at this or that. It's true but I'm going to stop saying that. Because I know how hard the players are trying and how much they care.
We view this team and this season through the lens of sports fans. Success is measured in wins and losses. "Why can't you do this or that?"
Take it from me, the dad of the most intense, hard on himself, been through the highs and lows kid on the team. They want that success just like you do.
This is a rambling take and I'm not sure what the point is, other than my weekend was hell trying to support a great kid going through a rough patch. We could all stand to take a moment and think about what they're going through when times are challenging.

The #1 team in the country, Arkansas, has lost 8 games already. They are the only team in the entire top 25 (and may I guess all of D1?) with a winning % above 80%. (It's 81%.)
Nobody goes undefeated in baseball. Ever.

Winning 65% of your games means losing one out of every three. Baseball is hard.

This is, ultimately, the burden of excellence. To be the best, you have to be harder on yourself than anyone else is.

A friendly reminder that Stanford, #26 RPI, takes on Arizona this weekend. The Wildcats, #8 RPI, are now riding a 10-game winning streak after defeating Grand Canyon U. 13-2 last night.
On a related note, I wanted to point out that Stanford closer Zach Grech is leading the nation in saves and is on the watch list for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year award: http://www.sportswriters.net/ncbwa/news/2021/stopper210428.html
As far as I know, Stanford has not had a winner for Stopper of the Year. Congratulations to Zach for getting this far and here's hoping he gets three more saves this weekend.
