RE: More conference realignment? - 82lsju - 07-26-2021

Quote:Oklahoma and Texas officially notified the Big 12 on Monday that they will not be renewing their grants of media rights after their expiration in 2025, according to a joint statement released by both schools.

"Providing notice to the Big 12 at this point is important in advance of the expiration of the conference's current media rights agreement," the statement said. "The universities intend to honor their existing grant of rights agreements. However, both universities will continue to monitor the rapidly evolving collegiate athletics landscape as they consider how best to position their athletics programs for the future."

Big 12 sources told ESPN on Monday that the statement leaves some "wiggle room" and doesn't fully guarantee that the flagship schools would remain in the league through 2025. The possibility remains that they will pay the $75-80 million penalty for leaving early, while also giving the required 18 months' notice, per Big 12 bylaws. Some have speculated that this is the first legal maneuver, and the possibility also exists that if the Big 12 dissolves before 2025, OU and Texas would no longer be bound to stay through the duration of the contract.

Any thoughts on the reports in the midwest that the BIG and PAC may merge or quasi merge.  In the alternative, BIG poaches PAC schools.  The report is the BIG is having talks with USC, UCLA, ORE, and COL.

I haven't seen anything like that. Do you have a link?

BC
BC, isn't it more like just a bigger monopoly. The "upstart" teams are like minor league teams. If you are good, you are brought up, and a not-so-good team is relegated. They are all part of the same system. I don't see any possibility of another league being formed to say compete with the Bundesliga or La Liga. Not that I think the system in Germany and Spain (and the rest of Europe) is bad. I think it works well. However, there is no possibility of a anti-trust suit messing up the situation.
In the USA, we have always been in a situation that anybody could "go nuclear" and play the anti-trust card. Most of the time in the case of the NBA or NFL something was worked out that caused the suit to be dropped or to be litigated very narrowly. The compromises (payoffs basically) were not always optimal, but they suppressed the legal issue. In the case of the NCAA however, no compromise was reached and they got hit with a decision. They have also been warned that further litigation can do more damage. In Europe, none of this can happen.

I got it from the Tex GAs forum.  Link should take you to the thread.  Click on the video in the first post.

there are also a couple similar articles behind the paywall at The Athletic like this one

Quote:Originally, I was going to suggest the Big Ten take USC, UCLA, Oregon and Washington. These are all AAU members, so they would get the academic stamp of approval from the other Big Ten presidents. USC, Oregon and Washington are the best football programs, and UCLA is a national brand situated in America’s second-largest city. But then I also thought about the Big Ten Academic Alliance, the academic consortium of Big Ten schools. (Former Big Ten member University of Chicago is no longer a member of the consortium but remains a collaborator.) That group couldn’t possibly pass up a chance to ask Cal and Stanford to join.

On a sports talk show they suggested UCLA and USC followed by Stanford and Cal to the B1G for academic reasons but mainly the LA and San Francisco TV markets.

IMO San Francisco does not really follow Stanford football or Stanford sports in general and LA is not a big follower of UCLA or USC; maybe USC football to some extent.

True. In fact, the entire Bay Area really doesn't care much about college sports. UCLA as a "brand" isn't big in football, and on a local level not too many students follow UCLA basketball, tradition or not. USC is a draw, but not a big one. The normal analysis is that USC draws when they are winning, but these days I don't even see that as a given. I don't expect a B1G PAC-12 semi-merger to work out. Too big geographically and worlds apart in focus.

From reviewing some Big 10 boards, the BIG Commissioner is new and according to the posters incompetent. The OSU AD was on the search committee for the Commissioner and said the current incumbent was not recommend for the job.  If he is as bad as advertised, he will have difficulty pulling off a merger.

Sounds interesting.  Maybe an Ivy East and an Ivy West.  Ivy West of Stanford, Northwestern, Vanderbilt, Duke, maybe Cal and UCLA.

Everyone thinks their commissioner is garbage, except maybe the SEC.

BC

RE: More conference realignment? - Giants - 07-27-2021

The Athletic’s Andy Staples is suggesting the Big Ten add USC, UCLA, Stanford, Cal, Oregon and Washington.  The 20 teams would be divided into four divisions with Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Stanford and Cal comprising one of the divisions.

Lots of interesting/crazy ideas are floating around………

Why not add AZ, CO, UT, and ASU, to make it 24 teams with the 6 pacific schools in 1 division?  It'll be a giant conference with average quality about the same as it was when the BigTen and Pac-12 were separate.  Slight upgrade by screwing over OSU and WSU.

I'm not really proposing this.  Just suggesting that there's probably no way to create a conference that competes at close to the same level as the SEC with Texas and Oklahoma added.

And competing with the new SEC would be even more difficult (really impossible) if the SEC were to poach Clemson and FSU from the ACC (which seems not that unlikely).

It would be a bit funny if all this realignment happened and then the Pac-12, Big Ten, ACC, and rump Big 12 outvoted the SEC on a shift to a 6-team playoff with each conference champion getting one spot and the highest-ranked G5 team getting a spot.

My brother in Ohio told me that he heard a report that Stanford and USC could end up in the Big 10 when the dust settles. FWIW.

No surprise.  The Big Ten wants to add AAU schools. USC and Stanford (and the two UC’s, UO and UW) fit that profile.  Those six schools would be high on the list of potential new members of the Big Ten.

If Stanford and USC were the first two choices of the Big 10, the only criteria that makes sense is to want Stanford for all the sports other than football.  Conversely it's hard to see all Stanford sports teams wanting to travel to Iowa, Indiana, Rutgers, and Maryland.

Most conversations have a top four of USC, UCLA, ORE, and COL.  STAN 5th and CAL 6th
