Sorry I wasn't clearer. I remember that Rose Bowl well. Who wouldn't? We spent the night before in a bowling alley somewhere in San Fernando Valley and left at 2 in the morning to spend the rest of the early morning sleeping in a minivan at the parade route just to avoid the gunfire. The Marine was all of five at the time. I meant that a bad defense would have given up 42 points to the Dayne machine, but Stanford didn't. Defense kept them in the game. If you told me Stanford would hold Wisconsin to 17, I would have predicted a blowout in Stanford's favor. It really was a good Big 10 type of game. Wasn't Stanford missing their starting center? Troy Walters played when he wasn't supposed to play, and that was cool. I recall the offense wasn't at full strength. Those Dana Bible teams were known for their offense, but the Kent Baer defense was decently stout. Maybe not Fangio stout, but stout enough for entertaining football.

McLaughlin played the opening series as a reward for his fine career.
Two turning points... Husak overthrows a wide open DeRonnie way downfield and Uso steps out of bounds after a reception where he may have been able to score. Close game and didn't Willie Howard play with a torn ACL?

Walters had a wrist injury, Howard and McLaughlin both had knee injuries. Walter’s and Howard both played, McLaughlin was given the honor of the opening snap, but didn’t play another down. Plus our long snapper (Sande) injured his ankle in the first half, and we had botched snaps on an extra point and a field goal that was blocked.

I, too, was at the Rose Bowl, bleary-eyed, on January 1, 2000. My recollection is that, on Stanford's last play on offense, Husak slipped else he would have found a wide-open receiver for the score that would have brought Stanford within two, two-point conversion pending, of course. (Or maybe I'm thinking of another game at which I was bleary-eyed.)
On the bright side, it was y2k and the world didn't end as some people were predicting.
