ncaa.com now says Match Stanford in the Play-by-play. Is it best of three, or is the site wrong?
Geaux Cardinal!

Next match is 5:00 pm PT tomorrow. If Minnesota wins their first round match, the venue will be sold out with about 98% of the fans cheering for Minnesota.

The fourth set was pretty good.
Hope that got Stanford warmed up and they get a faster start tomorrow.

Stanford at #18.
Creighton at #20 and Florida at #21 both get to host the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament. I don't think Florida deserved to host.
Likely CA’s restrictive COVID regulations. Probably would have only been allowed to sell half the seats in Maples. Plus masking indoors.

actually, full capacity allowed in Maples, with requirements of proof of vaccination/negative test, and masking except when eating or drinking.
But probably less than half full. Doubt that played a role in the seeding.

If Lougeay doesn't play, I don't know.
Oregon gets swept by Kansas. In the sport of WVB, after several decades of dominance the PAC-12-10 is no longer all that and a bag of chips.
Pretty good prediction: Lougeay played, if you net out the SE’s and the aces, you can count them on one hand, and we won 3-1. (It helped that ISU decided to gift us even more SE’s, of course.)
Your prediction for tomorrow?

Washington and UCLA win their first round matches 3-0. Though Fairfield kept it really close (27-25, 25-23, 26-24).
WSU fell to #5 Baylor in the second round.
Kansas, after knocking off Oregon yesterday knocked off #14 seed Creighton. Creighton is the first seed to fall.
Stanford has a chance to beat Minnesota tomorrow, but they can't afford a slow start.
They will need some offense from Sami Francis and the middles.

Watched the game. Sami had several smart kills. But when Baird and Kipp are that hot, let ‘em swing.

I'm cheering for Stanford. I'm hoping for a miracle.
Realistic Prediction: Minnesota wins in a sweep and none of the sets will be close.
The enthusiasm and size of the crowd will be a good experience for the freshmen even with the crowd cheering for the opponent.

I actually think that Stanford is very capable of beating Minnesota at Minnesota, because if an NCAA unseeded team like Penn State (which Stanford beat earlier in the season) can SWEEP (as in 3-0) Minnesota at Minnesota (an actual Big 10 match last Oct 22), I don't see why Stanford cannot defeat them, as well. However, if Stanford is to beat Minnesota at Minnesota today, they have to do it by a sweep or in 4 sets.

That hit was keyed by the fact that opponents have to worry about Miner hitting on 2. Baird was basically unblocked. Phenomenal set by Miner, given the pass.

After I did a mini-research on their Big 10 home matches vs ranked opponents,
the common denominator was Minnesota LOST WHEN THEY WERE OUTHIT PERCENTAGE-WISE.
Doesn't matter if they had more total kills or more total blocks than their opponent,
as long as they ended up with the lower hitting percentage, they lost!
However, the same applies to their opponents, and that's what happened to Nebraska:
Nebraska had more total kills 68-59 and more total blocks 14.5 - 10, but they were
outhit percentage-wise .135 - .168, and they had much more Service Errors 12-4
while Minnesota had more Service Aces 8-5.
Given that, let the Coach HAMBLY and her staff figure out an appropriate strategy.
I say don't give Minnesota any free points by minimizing on the Service Errors,
just serve the ball in and let them play, because the rule of hitting percentages
favor the Cardinal.

Of course the idea of serving tough is to get the other team out of system, thereby giving their setter fewer choices and tending to make the sets worse, and thereby lowering their hitting percentage. Getting an occasional ace is gravy, not the main goal.
So let's not just serve lollipops to avoid service errors.

I'm sure that will continue to be the serving strategy, and Stanford has vastly improved on this lately.
