It doesn't matter whether there are good counterexamples, which I am sure the staff pointed to; the question is about public perception. From the perspective of trying to read tea leaves, if you were a transfer trying to justify your decision, you would probably point to offensive development as a way to publicly justify your choice.
Alas, it seems like I was right, and Johnson was telegraphing his decision to go to UCLA by citing offensive development, which is a pretty bad indictment of the staff.

Not sure I understand why folks are so sad or disappointed in something that was so obviously inevitable, at least from the athletic perspective. In some sports -- let's say Women's Volleyball, for example -- it makes total sense, if the opportunity arises, to grad transfer from UCLA to Stanford if you want a shot at a National Championship. Indeed, it just happened last season.
In men's basketball, however, who in their right mind would choose a program that is making a habit of crashing and burning at the end of every season, and hasn't even been to NCAA postseason since firing its prior coach, over a program that made it to the Final Four this year [even if they did manage to lose to that other program]?

Well, I think we were looking at it from an academic perspective, and hoping he would do the same.

I may be wrong, but based on the interviews I saw and the video features, it looks as if the stage Myles really wants is one about making an impact on the world, giving back, contributing to the broader black community regarding a broad range of issues (starting with academics, STEM, etc.) and thinks of the basketball/sports stage as the smaller stage than the life stage.
This is obviously what I hope, but this is also how I read him. When he thinks of opportunity, I don't think he is imagining the NBA or the Final Four, but a future TED Talk, an interview on CNBC and that type of thing. For that reason, I suspect he sees Stanford as a better springboard -- and I'm sure Condi reinforced that message.
No matter what happens, this is a kid to watch.
I don't think Westwood is a bad place to become something important. After all it isn't SF State.

LOL, Phogge. The top 12 graduate electrical engineering programs in the US, per US News:
9 (tie): Carnegie Mellon; Cornell; Princeton; Purdue
8: UT Austin
6 (tie): Georgia Tech; Michigan
4 (tie): CalTech; Illinois
1 (tie): MIT; Stanford; Cal
UCLA comes in at #16, so still very highly regarded.

Minor nit, Rice is not a Stanofrd alumna; she got her degrees from the University of Denver and Notre Dame.

Yes, 50/50 weight on academics and basketball was bound to give UCLA the edge. We needed him to be leaning more towards academics 75/25 for him to have picked Stanford. Big loss at a critical position for next year.

No doubt. You can see the video of her dancing after the national title. I don't question her Stanford fandom; there are many non-alums who are big Stanford sports fans (including many people on this board).
That being said, and ignoring her niece's agency, we will see if she is capable of delivering a commitment from Kiki. I think, unfortunately, recent signs point to no.

Wow! Based off this one highlight tape I am very excited to watch Stanford this upcoming season. Raynaud looks exceptionally gifted for a young guy his age. Good get for the coaching staff.
