RE: New MBB coach? - Papa John - 02-25-2022

It's a bit more sophisticated than that burger. After all, there's a thread titled "Poll:Stanford Football Head Coach--What Would You Do?" that is being ignored. Instead the Shaw arguments and counterarguments are posted under a thread titled "New MBB coach?"

It's the Cardboard Corollary to Godwin's Law: as a Cardboard thread grows longer (regardless of topic or scope), the probability of a comparison involving David Shaw approaches 1.

Correct!  Can't wait for the Russian invasion of Ukraine thread, to see where/how Shaw will pop up in that one!

P.S.  BC, as I previously explained, Harbaugh's Effect CLEARLY can be tied to 2015 Rose Bowl because Shaw was able to recruit the studs that won that Rose Bowl with stud Harbaugh recruits (when he was casting an illusion that the program was still in great shape).  And btw, will anyone answer the question whether they think C-Mac would sign up for Stanford now (or a host of other football-first players)?

In fact, doesn't that say an awful lot?

By that logic, the success of the 2012 Rose Bowl season is thanks to the groundwork laid by Buddy Teevens in 2007.

You mean Walt Harris? Hey he did get Toby Gerhart as a recruit.

You mentioned McCaffrey (247 consensus ranking: 91) and Bryce Love (247 consensus ranking: 227); this year we signed David Bailey (66) and Ernest Cooper (152). I don't know each player's individual selection criteria but I assume all four of those players came in (or are coming in) with NFL aspirations, so it seems that comparable prospects are signing up for Stanford now. McCaffrey's class (2014) was ranked 13th nationally, Love's class (2015) was ranked 24th nationally and the most recent class (2022) was ranked 18th nationally, that's all we can really go on in answering your question.

I think you missed the above 0.500 three consecutive years part. Willingham was 3-8 the year before the Rose Bowl and 5-6 the year after. He was above 0.500 the first two years he coached at Stanford, but after that alternated sub-500 years with better years. To be fair, the 1999 team won the conference in large measure because the rest of the conference was BAD that year. Stanford was OK, which was better than the rest. There were some good players on that team, but it wasn't really a very strong group. Willingham got about all one could out of it, and that was enough. The fact they almost won the Rose Bowl despite so many injuries was a tribute to the guys and to the staff. I remember the atmosphere in the stands being that we were all holding our breath, fearing this couldn't last. It unfortunately didn't, but it was close.

I always like it when someone uses  “CLEARLY”. It’s a sign that’s what is coming next is bullish-t.

Clearly Harbaugh was still recruiting for Stanford while coaching the 49ers. Clearly
Geesh

RE: New MBB coach? - Phogge - 02-26-2022

Tiny Thornhill recruited Frankie Albert. His mistake was keeping him in the single wing. Coach Shag thrived with Tiny’s recruits. Happens all the time. Walsh 2 ditto.

RE: New MBB coach? - BobK - 02-26-2022

Last season start of practice Tiny’s last season the Daily reporter came out for an interview. Tiny looked at her said if they are sending a girl out it must mean I’m getting fired soon. My mom

Great quote!

Which reminds me, was there ever a full thread about your mother and how she became a Daily sports reporter back in the day? Surely there must be quite a few stories worth sharing, either on the Cardboard or over a few beers.

RE: New MBB coach? - BobK - 02-26-2022

Maybe beers best lol
My mom had to use the first name Mike. Not her name Marjorie.

Ok tomorrow when I get home about the time most of the incoming football class was declared ineligible

The benchmark you established was “7+ wins every season and a division title in the next 3” for what it would take to get Shaw in everyone’s good graces, and I was noting that nobody in the last 50 years other than Shaw has done that, and even if you relax the criteria to three consecutive winning seasons, you have to go back to the 70’s. It does answer the question accurately, but it also demonstrates how delusional people’s expectations on this board are.

Back to our mens basketball team.  We scored 39 points tonight in our game against cal.  Way to finish strong.  Come on Bernie, stop the suffering.

RE: New MBB coach? - 2006alum - 02-26-2022

I would be pleased to join this opinion in full. If Muir doesn't pull the trigger on Haase, the Admins need to seriously consider pulling the trigger on Muir, because he's allowing our two revenue sports teams to wither on the vine, without even forcing changes among the assistants. Professors may get life tenure, but coaches and ADs shouldn't.

RE: New MBB coach? - BostonCard - 02-26-2022

Regardless of personnel choices, Muir has been a disaster as an AD.  I periodically recite these, but it is worth remembering that during his tenure:
* First even major NCAA sanctions
* Varsity blues scandal, which either happened under his nose or his tacit encouragement
* Ham-handed attempt to cut varsity sports, followed by a humiliating reversal
* worsening fiscal situation

And then there is the declining fortune of the football and basketball teams.

He will get 2 regardless.

OK, there is a case for bringing him back next year, albeit about as strong as the lint I cleaned out of my dryer last night.  But another year afterward?  Huh?  Wha?

Why shouldn't our standard of "More Signal, Less Noise" extend to the teams we root for?  In his tenure at Stanford, Haase has delivered 6 years of essentially pure noise.  What is the justification for permitting him to make that seven, let alone 8?

Well, there have only been 7 floor burns this season and he promised more. He has to stay until the correct # is reached.

RE: New MBB coach? - jacket3ree - 02-26-2022

Yes, please.

I didn't know or care that Stanford played Cal tonight. I found out via text from JT Jr: "If they don't fire Haase, I'm mailing my sweat stained Jacobsen jersey back to whomever runs that **** show of an AD."

I'll pay attention to hoops when the school does.
