Cameron had 6 brinks tonight.  SIX!  Team had 11.

We ended up with the same number of turnovers (20) that we had in our first game against Texas.

It takes a team and a shout to Lacie for taking charge becoming a fine point guard and better still a winner. A Final Four Point Guard. All played great. How about that rebound margin of 17. We are tough

A special shoutout to the Hull sisters. Lexie was tremendous and Lacie played all 40 minutes. To lead their team to victory and shine back in their hometown is special and so fitting to cap off their collegiate careers en route to the Final 4. They are winners, plain and simple.

Watching our team end the Longhorns' season in the Elite 8 in the Hulls' hometown . . .

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Texas elite eight Sunday 6pm - TheFarm07 - 03-27-2022

We win 59-50; this was the most nervous I've been in a long time.

We turned the ball over 20 times, but we had a critical 45-28 rebounding advantage and converted over 80% of our FTs (18/22).

Jones had a double-double (18 pts, 12 rebounds) and converted 10 of her 11 FT opportunities, while Lexie was a warrior (as always) with 20 points. Brink didn't play that much, but she was very impactful when she was in, with short jumpers and 6 blocks.

I am still recovering and trying to get my blood pressure and heartrate down, so I'll leave it to others for a more detailed analysis.

Both teams had same numbers of turnovers and FTs made as in first game, and similar number of 3-pointers made. Big difference was our 4Q defense - only 10 points given up tonight vs 26 in November.

RE: WBB: Stanford 59 Texas 50 on to F4 - 81alum - 03-27-2022

1.  As with the first game, we almost completely shut down their bigs.  Their forwards were a collective 2-9.  Our 11 blocks had something to do with that.

2. Their speedy little guards scored 14, 15, and 11 points.  We could not shut them down, but kept any of them from going for over 20 like they did last time.

3. We wound up with exactly 20 turnovers again--the same number as before.  But they did not seem as consequential.  Only 4 of the 20 were steals by Texas. However, in November they had 12 points off turnovers and tonight they had 15. Go figure.

4. We shot 82% of our free throws and outscored Texas 18-11 at the line.  A tremendous improvement since November.  Jones going 10/11 from the line was awesome.  There were 46 fouls called in the game.  The announcers thought that would favor Texas by making our offense be disjointed.  That might be true, but the fouls also punished Texas's style of defense.

5. We were only 3/17 from three point range.  I think that our three point shooters do better when they catch and shoot in rhythm, and Texas generally makes that impossible.

6. While Texas was ballyhooed as the great defensive team, our defense was better, holding them to 33% shooting, compared to 37% for us.  We held them to 10 points in the 4th, and never gave them more than 14 points in any quarter.

7. Tara's insertion of a zone was brilliant not because it was terribly effective, but because it changed the whole flow of the game and Texas never got its mojo back.

8. Rebounding was a major advantage.  Texas had 6 O boards, we had 12.  That goes a long way to making up for our 20-10 turnover disadvantage.  A 45-28 overall rebounding advantage when we were also shooting at a higher percentage was awesome.

9. Lexie is playing like a future WNBA pick.  She shot 50% and while her offense has been up and down this year, this is the third game in a row she has led.  What a nice performance in Spokane for the home town kid.

10.  Texas's whole defensive strategy seems to be to prevent assists.  Even so we had 14 assists on 19 made baskets.  More of our back door cuts worked tonight than in November, I think a reflection of better timing and more accurate passing.

With Maryland and Texas I think we have had the hardest path to the F4 of any one seed.  4 down and 2 to go.

RE: WBB: Stanford 59 Texas 50 on to F4 - chimera - 03-27-2022

I said the other day that it doesn't matter if we turn the ball over that much against Texas as long as we win.  Great win!  Texas is a very, very physical and tough defense, and I don't think we played all that well in some aspects, but we were the tougher team at the end.  I thought the coaches did a good job.  They put that zone in that helped a lot, they took advantages of mismatches.  They changed up the inbounds plays at the half.  They used our bench well.  I keep having to say this but these games are HARD to win.  Very good teams playing well is all you will see at this point unless you get super lucky like SC did with only facing Creighton.

Jones was great.  Lexie was great.  Brink was great.  Belibi was great on the boards.  Lacie was great dealing with the pressure.  Everyone who set foot on the court did good things.  Congrats to the team.  Fun group to root for.  As far as I am concerned the season is a resounding success already.  But get some icing for that cake, please.

Nope.

But Tara was probably trying to schedule a date in Austin while shaking Vic's hand tonight.

Also, in this game Harmon had 14 points while in Nov she had 21.  In this game Matharu had 0 points while in Nov she had 17.

Tonight Stanford held Texas to their lowest scoring output of the season at 50 points.

What's the story behind the line dancing?  They obviously practiced.  Tara even has it nailed.

Stanford held Texas to less than Stanford's opponents' average score, to less than Texas's opponents' average score.
Texas let Stanford get more points than their opponents' average score.

ergo... Stanford had the better defense.  (and 11 blocks)

We gave up 20 TO again tonight. 17.6% 3PT% (fewer 3s than Texas).  And still we won.

Wow, it surprised me at the end to hear that Lexie had 20 points.  Did they say that during the game?  All I was hearing was how good Harmon was.

Lexie had 16 points on the floor; Haley only 8;  Haley was able to make FTs at least.  12 rebounds is good. I remember her failing to guard at least 5 points for Texas.  She had 4 TO.

I was surprised that Anna only played 24 minutes.   Did I miss something happening to here? Sure, she had 3 fouls, but that's what the refs were calling.
Lacie played 40 minutes with 0 points. so I guess Tara liked her defense (see comment about re Stanford being the better defensive team).  She was our only player with more assists than TO.
Fran did a good job, fouling out in 25 minutes with 11 rebounds.
If Cam could only play a full game...
The others (including Hannah) didn't stand out.

And one last good point:  No one was hurt.

I think it should have been Lexie, but one can make a case either way.  Fantastic play from all. And Don't forget so many others, a real team effort. Fran really contributed,  clutch when Cam in foul trouble, massive in rebounding.

Ashton was a key contributor on defense by helping to clog the paint, deflecting a pass and helped with screens.

Excellent point re the zone D. Tara seems to have figured out that she has a team with incredible depth. Hence putting Iriafen on the floor early. Try combinations, see what works, win the second half.

Anna was having trouble defending jump shots in the key. She also picked up 2 fouls in the first half and got pulled.

Tara was asked about this in the presser. In essence, she thought the players were too hard on themselves about the 4Q letdown in the last game so she cooked up something fun with Haley and Kiki’s help…
