Rodney's continued apologia for Shaw last night was tough to take...again.
gallows humor in numerous text threads during the game were good however. again on Rodney, when he was talking benefit of scout team work, a former player commented that "Rodney had a lot of experience running scout team"

Rodney made the mistake of using the “hater” word to call out a 70’s alum player back in the early teens after that guy made a very valid technical point to criticize Shaw. That player played in the NFL. Rodney never did.
Shaw did a great job of carrying on after Harballs. He recruited well and was highly successful. But his reticence to vary, to take a chance in several crucial moments threw away the chance to reach the final height.
Shaw was never a builder, he was a caretaker and now he’s an older comfortable man who needs to use his parachute to do things like Ted Talks and draft acumen on TV. He needs not to be a football coach anymore.

Of course he is past his shelf-life and it's become painfully conspicuous. As hard to watch as his team. But he has wrapped his identity in what he does and is oblivious to what he actually is, which is a failing head coach. I've moved from frustration to exasperation to pity. Truly sad to watch him at this moment. Another celebrity who missed his chance to exit while he was on top. Dude needs an intervention. Fat chance, that.
Word's out in recruiting circles and we're seeing it in competitive mismatches. The Harbaugh Halo (followed by the HarbShaw halo) is long, long gone. He's now the Norma Desmond of college coaches.

I will always appreciate what he did and what he accomplished. And I will not limit that by suggesting it was just all Harbaugh etc. But there is no question that his time has come and gone.
I took the position a couple years back that he earned the opportunity to show whether or not he can rebuild the program. He has had that opportunity and he has proven that he cannot. So the choice is simple. Either he goes or they continue to fade more and more into oblivion. My question remains as it has always been – does the administration give a shit?
I have his replacement. Deion Sanders. Do you want to make a splash? That’ll make a splash. And look what he’s doing at Jackson State. I have as much chance as being Stanford‘s head coach as Deion Sanders does. But I tell you what I’d love to freaking see it. Sanders is brash. To say he’s confident is an understatement. He’s also smart. And he would bring a completely different mentality into the program. I think kids would want to play for Deion. Never gonna happen. But man it would be fun to see. (He has said he will entertain Power Five jobs by the way.) Heck maybe Ronnie Lott would agree to be DC and or coach the defensive backs. Jerry Rice could coach WR’s. I mean it’s about time he gets a job so he doesn’t have to run up and down the sidelines at Levi with his GOAT cap on! And while I’m at a roll let’s have Dave Wyman to coach the linebackers. I don’t give a damn how much technical knowledge he has – although I suspect it’s fine. His mentality alone would be enough for me. Put 11 Dave Wyman’s on the field defensively and let’s see what happens. One can dream.

We’ve been agreeing a lot lately Gail. It’s almost scary! :). Or, it’s so freaking obvious what needs to happen that even those that were at one time on somewhat opposite ends of the “debate“ are now in line. Admittedly took me a while to get there. But I tend to be pretty loyal to those that have provided me with the thrills those Shaw teams provided.
. I can recall some of the same debates with people who thought Bochy should be out. I never really came around to that point of view because he gave us three championships when no one else in my life has given one, he almost had a lifetime pass. And I really didn’t care whether Brandon Belt hit second or fifth. But I recognized at the end it was time. All coaches sooner or later (or 99%) at some point need to move on

Deion coaching at the White Tower of American universities? And I don’t mean that in a racial sense. Perhaps even The Chronicle would buy in.
Can you even imagine a Zoom conference between the tight assed Stanford Board members? Nobody on the roster would transfer (and right now a few should).
But alas, Rodney would be against it.

The stages of being a fan who won't tolerate shitty performance from teams for which they root, Stanford Football fan living on the East Coast when game is after 10:30 ET style:
Excited and invested (2009 - 2017)
- Spend all day watching other games to see how Stanford stacks up to others
- Sleep is overrated and don't even feel tired at 10:30 because your enthusiasm keeps you awake
- Go on Cardboard after the game, watch post game interviews, because it's tough to just sleep after game, even it is 2am
- Pore through Box Scores and stats in morning, see how Stanford is doing compared to competition
- More Cardboard engagement about the game in morning, eagerly awaiting new polls
Still emotionally invested, but not excited anymore (2018 - 2020)
- Spend all day watching other games, wondering why Stanford can't be playing like other teams that look more impressive
- You feel tired and DVR the game to watch in morning, and do everything possible to avoid seeing score result until you've watched
- Watch the game and don't fast forward through more than commercial breaks, you still want the live TV experience
- Pore through Box Scores and stats
- Go on Cardboard on Sunday morning to engage in board discussion about it
Interested, but barely invested emotionally (2021)
- Spend all day watching games because you are a college football fan and Stanford's struggles can't take that from you!
- DVR the game, but don't want to waste another morning watching bad football, so you check the score before committing time to watch game. If it is a loss, you just delete recording. If it is a win, you watch, but fast forward through most of it.
- Pore through the Box Scores and stats
- Go on Cardboard after the game and do nothing but complain, because even a win isn't fun to watch
Interested because you always have been, but no longer emotionally invested at all (2022)
- You never imagined Stanford (and Cal) Football ineptitude could kill your passion for the sport, but here you are
- Watch other teams play, but can't stay for a whole game live, and use remote 10x less than you used to on Saturday
- Check the ESPN app just to see scores because you are really just curious what is happening, based on habit more than passion
- Find yourself DVRing Alabama-Tennessee just to make sure you see a great college game
- Don't watch or DVR the Stanford game at 10:30, and don't even think about it when going to bed
- See the score in the morning, but don't bother with Box Scores, don't care enough to read comments about the game or talk about the program on Cardboard anymore
I guess the fifth stage is caring about Stanford as much as I do Rice. Hopefully it wont't get to that point, but am not ruling it out. It's pretty much all up to Stanford's leaders to determine whether it does or not.

The great thing about being a Stanford fan is when one sport is down, others are up. I look forward to watching and cheering for our WBB, WVB, both golf teams, both soccer teams, both water polo teams, both gymnastics teams, swimming, T&F, softball, and baseball. Stanford is THE school of national championships. Our rise to elite level in football was exciting while it lasted, but it's clearly over. For now. Maybe forever. Maybe not. We'll see. GO CARD!

Concur with the spirit of your take. Still, there is something galling about the knee-jerk complacency of the "either-or" POV rather than seeing the possibilities of the "both-and" perspective when it comes to football. Specifically, the exceptionalism of the sport. A great program does things far beyond a full stadium -- for the larger community beyond the institution. John Hennessy realized this. And I suspect he's not amused by what's happened since he retired.

In case it wasn't mentioned, Caleb Robinson is also hurt now. I noticed he took an enormous hit on a screen pass for no gain in the third quarter. It seemed like the back of his head hit the turf, although it could be something else. He was in the game for a couple more plays but then did not return for the rest of the game.
Next week, we may be down to Barrow and a converted safety, Leigber, who received a couple touches on the last drive. A sad state of affairs...

What has been written in this passage reminds me of the discussion that took place among a Stanford grads who played football and baseball and then headed off to Midway and Normandy and other places etched in history just after graduation. The discussion took place in my folk's back yard in Palo Alto, the subject was concerning Jack Curtis and what had become of Stanford Football. A few months later after Curtis was fired and John Ralston a CAL grad and former linebacker was hired as the new head coach, this same group agreed that the football program needed real help, but this was a bit drastic! Fortunately, this entire group lived long enough to see both the Indians and the Stanford Band take Woody and Bo to the woodshed. There is always hope, from Ralston, to Walsh, to Green, to Harbaugh, to ...........?
