One potentially interesting note is that now Shaw is no longer in the mix, Wilcox of Cal is the second longest tenured (since 2017) PAC-12 coach. Obviously Whittingham of Utah is the longest tenured (since 2005). Chip Kelly and Jonathan Smith both arrived in 2018 Longevity in the PAC-12 just isn't a "thing" these days.

Notes on Mendenhall from my brother (UVA grad).

Great coach. Super idiosyncratic. Not very dynamic or personable. His style doesn't play well in the NIL era. A good fit at a tier 2 school like BYU (Mendenhall is Mormon).

Inherited a car crash at UVA. Took the team as far as he could. First 2 years were rough. Then 4 consecutive winning records but did not compete for league titles.

Doesn't recruit all that well. Recruits for character. The 3 kids who were shot were his (but so was the shooter).

Not sure I agree. I think a lot depends on what Stanford is going to do about NIL & portal, and I think those things need to be solidified before talking to any coaches. I expect every candidate for the job to ask Muir what he's doing about them, and if he doesn't have a clear answer I would be a lot less interested in the job.

Time for Bernie to get off his tuckus, pronto.

Wouldn't surprise me one bit if Wilcox were shown the door by the end of this week.

It would surprise me. Where is Cal going to get his 25 million dollar buyout?

RE: The Great Mentioners - AcesUp - 11-27-2022

Richard Sherman, he would be a great recruiter especially for inner city kids that don't think they can accepted to the school.  If a Hall of Fame defensive back, Deion Sanders who had no previous college coaching experience can be a successful college head coach then I don't see why Sherman can be the same.  He would have to surround himself with a great supportive coaching staff but I don't think that should be a problem, he can ask some of his old teammate's such as Doug Baldwin.

Just listening to Sherman's press conferences would be worth it.

easy, UCLA will need to come up with the $25 million if they want to go to the Big10 that bad.

Well Sherman might be in high demand by Ohio State as a defensive back coach/consultant after yesterday.

I don’t think we have that kind of time.  The portal opens Dec. 5, which is a week from tomorrow.

RE: The Great Mentioners - needle - 11-27-2022

Would you rather have someone who loves Stanford but has to be talked into coaching in this era of CFB, or someone who loves coaching college football but has to be sold on Stanford?

RE: Stanford Football moving on - ADPinWDC - 11-28-2022

Some caution... Ted Leland hired Buddy Teevins from Florida in 2002, which failed after three losing seasons.
So, then Leland shifted over to Walt Harris from PITT.   FAIL.
https://www.espn.com/college-football/news/story?id=1934023

"Ask Andrew Luck"?:  Pep Hamilton is toiling away at $1M a year as OffCo for uncompetitive Houston Texans (1-8-1).
Hamilton (at Stanford 2010-2013) was OffCo for Luck at Stanford, then at Colts.  Harbaugh took him to 49ers in 2013.
He was a Scholar QB at Howard (1993-1996), now age 48.  QB coach in NFL.
Pair him with Derek Mason (at Stanford 2010-2012) now making $1.2M at OKST as DefCo, after impossible task of HC at Vandy in SEC.

They coached under Shaw together, during Luck and early Hogan.  They know Stanford.
A Hamilton + Mason combo would quickly solve recruiting challenges with the regime change.

There are those on the Cal sites that have suggested that. However, given that UCLA Athletics is in dire financial straits already, and given that Cal's situation is not lots better, any money they (actually the Regents) extract from UCLA is needed just to keep the program afloat. UCLA also doesn't have a new revenue stream until next year anyway. The consensus seems to be that possibly next year, or certainly the year after, Cal could maybe consider a buyout. Still lots of money that probably would have to come from boosters. Most of all, not happening this week.

RE: The Great Mentioners - OutsiderFan - 11-28-2022

Hey, WIM, I have a question. Did the Shaw displacement lead to a re-engagement with the Cardboard?  I know you were one of the more prolific posters here, then curtailed quite a bit during the Shawpocalypse, but now are back initiating threads and participating in discussion once he announced his departure. Coincidence?

On the topic of media pundits opining about Stanford Football HC candidates, we need to keep something in mind. Stanford operates in about as much secrecy as any program there is. Big programs can't keep secrets because there is too much interest. Programs like Cal are like open books because it runs such a loose ship. Stanford OTOH, doesn't leak and there just isn't a visible booster presence that filters down to even people  like BobK, who seem to be the most plugged in source on this board. IOW, any poster on here speculating is likely to be as informed about what Stanford might be doing as Jon Wilner.

Even the Stanford sports site publishers don't have much of an idea about what Stanford is thinking or doing. People on this board - who I would say are pretty close to Stanford sports - were speculating Stanford might be inclined to drop football, rather than embrace the Transfer Portal and NIL. And nobody here thought Shaw would depart, yet that's exactly what happened.

So it's pretty pointless for anyone to claim they know what Stanford will do. Now, someone like Wilner might get various agents calling him to pump out names to drive up the perceived demand for their clients by connecting them with Stanford, but I don't see anyone having any real inside sources into Stanford, not even reporters who's job is covering Stanford sports. Based on what I know, parents of athletes are the best available sources, and they don't know what is going on with the big strategic issues.

Just a thought.
Welcome, Opus007.  My husband voiced the same idea about Leach.  But I think the Pirate is like cilantro--you either love him or you can't stand him.  Maybe KJ Costello would have a first-hand opinion to share.
One thing for sure:  There would be no boring press conferences.

People have been talking about player revolts. If you really want one, hire Urban Meyer.

Then we can throw that in the growing pile of "reasons that Muir should be fired." NIL & portal aren't just about football, although their impact on football appears more pronounced than any other sport. Stanford should have had a plan at least six months ago. It doesn't need to be a mind-blowing plan, but there doesn't appear to be anything. My understanding is that all three golfers who have significant NIL deals did them with no help from Stanford. Just one set of examples I'm sure there are many others.

The latter.  To me, that’s an easy call.
