Stanford started slow, then picked up the pace. Stanford has finished its round and is the leader at 21 under par, 5 strokes ahead of second place USC. Zhang and Englemann both shot 64 and are the co-leaders in the clubhouse.

RE: WGolf - 2023 thread - Spiny_Norman - 05-08-2023

As GK3 alluded, Stanford has stormed into the lead at the Pullman regional after 18 holes. The team tore up the back 9. Every player was under par and Stanford's 4 scorers were a collective -16 just on the back 9.

Stanford is led by Sadie Englemann who shot a Stanford career best, bogey-free 64 (-8). Rose Zhang is tied with Englemann at 64 after finishing with 4 birdies and an eagle. Right behind them is frosh Kelly Xu with a Stanford career best 68 (-4). Megha Ganne shot 71 (-1). Angelina Ye was the drop score at even par 72.

Remember the objective is to finish in the top 5 and advance to the NCAAs. There is no real advantage or priority that comes from finishing 1st vs. 5th. But there is the confidence that comes from playing well under pressure.

1. Stanford -21
2. USC -16
3. Texas Tech -11

Pullman is by far the easiest regional scoring-wise among the 6 regional sites. As I type this with players still on the course, 29 of the 66 golfers in the field are under par. At San Antonio (the toughest regional), only 5 players are under par.

Addendum - weather looks fabulous.

Just past halfway through Round 2 today, the Cardinal women stretch their lead from five strokes to eleven:

Team - NCAA Pullman Regional - 2023-05-08 (golfstat.com)

Geaux Cardinal!

RE: WGolf - 2023 thread - Spiny_Norman - 05-09-2023

Women's golf is doing what we want to see all Stanford teams do - play its best in the post-season. Stanford is running away with the regional. After today's 2nd round, the team is 18 shots ahead of 2nd place Texas Tech and 28 shots above the cut line (the 6th place team).

Stanford was led today by the freshmen. Megha Ganne birdied 4 of the 5 par 5s en route to a 67 (-5). It was her best round as a Stanford Cardinal. Kelly Xu shot another 68 (-4). Since she was added to the lineup in the spring, she has improved almost every tournament. She has been a top 10 contender just about every time out recently.

Sadie Englemann has now played 36 holes without a bogey. She shot 70 (-2) and is 2 shots behind teammate Rose Zhang for the individual medal. Zhang shot 68 (-4).  The drop score today was Angelina Ye at 77 (+5).

Team score
1. Stanford -36
2. Texas Tech -18
3. Clemson -15
4. USC -13
5. Baylor -12

Individual
1. Zhang -12
3. Englemann -10
T5. Xu -8
T9. Ganne -6

Edit - Kelly Xu's official score has been corrected to 69, not 68. Final scores above should be adjusted accordingly.

RE: WGolf - 2023 thread - winflop - 05-09-2023

Dominating performance on moving day. Damn these ladies are good.

If Rose wins the regional and national individual titles she will break Tiger's record of 11 titles, and do so in the same timeframe (2 years)

RE: WGolf - 2023 thread - Spiny_Norman - 05-10-2023

Stanford cruised to a regional victory today. I believe that their total of -50 ties the school record for lowest ever 54 hole tournament score. According to the Stanford Record Book, -50 is also the NCAA record.

Clemson finished 2nd, 17 shots behind. Clemson actually outscored Stanford over the final 36 holes. But Stanford had an 18 shot lead over the Tigers after day 1 and no way would Clemson close that gap.

Rose Zhang and Sadie Englemann were tied with 9 holes to play. Then Rose stepped on the gas and won the individual title going away.

Final team scores
1. Stanford -50
2. Clemson -33
3. USC - 26

Final individual scores
1. Zhang -19
2. Englemann -15
T8. Xu -10
T13. Ganne -6
T49. Ye +5

Stanford advances to the NCAA championship in Scottsdale, AZ beginning two weeks from Friday. There were some top 10 teams that did not make it out of regionals - #7 Auburn and #8 Oregon. Also #11 ASU epically collapsed today to fall from 2nd to 7th in Raleigh and out of the postseason. Pressure is real! #3 LSU showed their mettle by getting 8 late birdies on the final 9 holes to sneak past Arkansas into the 5th and final qualifying spot at Palm Beach.

Nothing is a given. Remember that Stanford just squeaked past #27 Georgia in the quarterfinals and #17 Auburn in the semifinals last year. Seeding or ranking doesn't mean much once the tournament begins. But there is only one Rose Zhang and she plays for Stanford which certainly does help the Cardinal.

RE: WGolf - 2023 thread - winflop - 05-10-2023

A lot of focus on Rose Zhang and deservedly so. But I want to give a shout out to Sadie Englemann and Kelly Xu.

Sadie had her career low for both 18 holes and 54 holes and finished second to Rose ahead of a LOT of very good players. I've spent a little time with her over her Stanford career and befriended her father a bit. She has really matured at Stanford and it showed this year as the team really needed her to step up with Heck and Seay sidelined for the entire spring season.

I haven't yet met Kelly Xu but to play like this as a freshman is awesome and I think how she plays will go a LONG way to determining whether Stanford repeats as national champions. It's really hard to win with only three strong players - Zhang, Englemann, and Ganne.

Looking ahead to nationals, I wonder whether Angelina Ye will be in the 5th spot at Greyhawk but I'm not sure Coach Walker has a lot of options at this point. Maybe Caroline Sturdza but if she had been playing well this spring we would have seen her play in more tournaments.

We should still be the strong favorites to win the title, but match play is TOUGH. Last year we won 3-2 in all three rounds of match play.

RE: WGolf - 2023 thread - Spiny_Norman - 05-11-2023

Sturdza was the alternate at regionals and will probably be the alternate at nationals too.

I hope that Ye gets an opportunity to work through any scar tissue she has over what happened at nationals in 2021. She 3 putted from 20 feet on the 18th hole in the quarterfinal match vs. Arizona when a 2 putt would have won the hole and the match. She then lost the 19th hole which was the deciding match as Stanford fell 3-2. I wonder if that match precipitated her downward spiral from then until this spring.

her 11 titles were won in just 19 tournaments...

RE: WGolf - 2023 thread - Spiny_Norman - 05-17-2023

Stanford begins its title defense at Grayhawk in Scottsdale on Friday. But there is surprising news about who will be playing at Grayhawk.

Rose Zhang, Sadie Englemann, Megha Ganne and Kelly Xu will be joined in the lineup by Rachel Heck! She has recovered enough from her surgery in March to be ready for competition play (we will find out soon enough if that is true). And if needed, Stanford's alternate will be Brooke Seay! She has not played at all in the spring while recovering from a concussion.

Stanford tees off at 11:30 am pacific on Friday for round 1 and 6:10 am pacific Saturday for round 2.

Wow, that's great news!

Awesome news. Thanks for the update

I'm a fan of Rachel Heck but how many practice rounds has she done in the past few weeks?  I want those playing the best right now to be in the tournament.  If that is her, great.

Yep, Coach Walker isn't going to put anyone in the rotation who isn't better at this point that other possibilities.  I don't see her playing Heck or Brook just because they might get hot and have a good round.

RE: WGolf - 2023 thread - winflop - 05-17-2023

This is awesome news!! Even if neither is 100%, I think they are the best options available

Also, Seay did play Augusta but did not play well (second to last)

RE: WGolf - 2023 thread - Spiny_Norman - 05-18-2023

The players (and fans) should be prepared for some loooooong days of golf. The women's NCAA tournament expands this year to 30 teams. With a difficult course set up and a full field of 150 golfers, rounds could take a while.

Fortunately, Stanford will be in the first groups off each day in their wave. They will lead the afternoon wave tomorrow starting at 11:30 off the 10th tee. Forecast tomorrow is for temperatures to top out around 90 with some cloud cover. Things heat up after that with daytime highs from 95 to 100 the rest of the week.

Stanford turns around quickly to play in the first groups of the day on Saturday at 6:10 am. At least they will be done before the heat of the day.

As a reminder, the format is 72 holes of stroke play, followed by the top 8 teams playing head-to-head match play. There will be a cut after 54 holes with only the lowest 15 teams playing the final round. The mindset for stroke play has to be that you are playing against the golf course and against yourself. Be aggressive selectively. Par is going to be a good score. Have a short memory after a bad hole or a bad shot.

Stanford led the field last year with a 4 round total of +9. The 8th place team was at +30. 2 years ago on the same golf course, Stanford also led the field with a 4 round total of -10. The 8th place team was at +21.

Stanford is a young team with 2 frosh, 1 soph and 2 juniors. But Zhang (1st in 2022), Heck (1st in 2021, 31st in 2022) and Englemann (49th in 2021, 27th in 2022) have prior NCAA experience at Grayhawk. So does Seay (20th in 2021, 40th in 2022). That should help with course strategy and reading the greens. They will be great teachers and mentors for Xu and Ganne.

Assuming the weather is dry and there are no particular differences in wind speed between the cooler and hotter parts of the day, do good golfers tend to score better or worse in warmer (90s) vs cooler (80s) weather, and in the afternoon (when the fairway and greens dry out)?  Players may be more comfortable in the earlier part of the day, but that's not what goes up on the scoreboard.

In general I think you favor playing early. The greens are untrodden. The temperature doesn't beat you down. And perhaps most importantly the wind is calmer. In the desert (as in other places), the wind picks up in the afternoon. The wind plus the heat dries out the greens and makes them firmer.

Hydration, hydration, hydration!  I am sure Coach Walker has some system to make sure her ladies drink enough liquids.  The following article tells you what the negative effects are of failing to drink enough in these conditions.
