Not sure if there are any Stanford alums on the women’s rugby team (I suspect not), but regardless this video is worth a watch. It’s reminiscent of Casey Moore’s “Run for the Roses”, of Moore had scored the 94 yard touchdown with time expiring and Stanford down 6.

Is women's rugby still a club sport at Stanford? By chance I knew two women who were on the team, many years apart.

Women’s soccer cruising mostly so far. Smith and Girma looking great. Davidson has been hurt the last 1.7 or so games. I hope she is back for the first knockout game.
The team I will shill for though is Women’s volleyball - total mayhem. Karch has a bunch of talented but variously flawed pieces at OH including Plummer. She has had some good moments hitting and some bad moments returning serve. They went 5 sets in both matches so far, almost reverse sweeping China and almost getting reverse swept by Serbia. One set is brilliant volleyball and the next is total chaos. I have no idea who the best 6 are or if Karch just needs to keep rotating players; but it is hugely entertaining, and the announcers are great. Finally, it is shocking how little it resembles the college game these days. Instead, it’s blast away even out of system with very few long rallies. Definitely worth watching.

Agree, I've been watching the volleyball too. We think our top college teams are strong, and they are, but the Olympics is like another level. Seems like dinking hardly ever works in Olympics, have to take a strong spike on every set, and try to locate it around or deflecting off side or fingertips of blockers. Seems like the talent on the US team hasn't played as much together as some of the other teams, and hopefully they get more together quickly.

Over in the water polo venue, the women's water polo team, defending Olympic champions, are 2-1. They won easily over Greece 15-6, then lost to Spain 11-13, and easily beat Italy 10-3. Spain has an excellent team, losing to the US in the Olympic finals in 2012 & 2020 (5th in 2016).
One player for Spain scored 4 consecutive goals in the third period, building a 5-goal cushion. In my opinion, Spain took advantage of the US's otherwise excellent goalie with some well placed shots close to her body. (Unfortunately, the Olympic stats don't report saves by the goalie.)
Against Greece, Stanford scored on 7 of 8 shots during power plays, while Greece scored on 3 of 13. (Note that is not the same stat we're used to seeing (scores on power plays).) Each field player was in for at least 10 minutes. The alternate goalie was in for about 7 minutes.
Against Italy, each field player was in the game for at least 12 minutes. (The alternate goalie didn't play.)
Against Spain, the big difference is that Spain took 22 action shots to the US's 13. Both shot about 25% on this kind of shot, where Spain scored 3 more goals. (Or was it 4??? The stat page seems to show 1 less goal for Spain (total 12 rather than 13) in the breakdown into kinds of shots.)
The #1 USA Women return to the pool on Friday when they take on #13 France to close out group play at 6:30pm local time/12:30pm et/9:30am pt. The match will air live on USA Network and stream on Peacock. Although you'll get ads on USA, I expect they will have Tony Azevedo (Stanford 2003, Olympic silver 2008) as color commentator. On Peacock, you'll get a British guy that is knowledgeable but speaks a different language(;-) The US beat France 16-5 a year ago.
The #9 US men's water polo team is 1-2, beating Romania (14-8), but losing to Italy (8-12) and Greece (11-13). I don't think they're going to get out of pool play. One of their two remaining pool matches is against #1 Croatia while the other is against #8 Montenegro.
Bleech.... I just looked at the new GoStanford.com. According to the rosters on it, Matt Farmer was coaching Stanford Men's Water Polo when he was only about 4 years old. Every time someone wants to put new lipstick on the pig, data gets lost.

Read somewhere that Ashleigh had 13 saves in the first game and 10 in the second. To quote one of the articles, the Spanish women made Ashleigh look silly. Watched part of the game, and indeed they did. They doughnuted her at least three times, including on a 5M shot. Ouch.
