That's kind of wild--seven unranked players! This is the kind of chaos that the NCAA was perhaps hoping for when they did away with a whole-season ranking picking the most qualified players and went to performance in a handful of fall tournaments. Some of the top players will have their regional tournaments this weekend, so we'll see some more ranked names get added, but the sheer presence of so many names that wouldn't have made it under the old system tells you that there are going to be plenty of folks in the top 30 that don't make it in the end.
This is also partly a feature of how unbalanced the regions are. The Carolina Region is a murderer's row. The Mountain Region has nobody. The Central Region is dominated by some top players at Oklahoma State, but is otherwise weak, so one upset and you see someone from Wichita State make it through. Vanderbilt and Tennessee dominate the Ohio Valley, but aside from them? The Northeast is weak, with its top seed ranked #63. New England is weaker, with its top seed ranked #105 and its #2 seed not ranked at all. The Southwest is loaded. The Northwest is top-heavy, with Stanford traditionally dominating over players from Cal, UW, etc. And so on, and so on.
Anyway, all that to say that to win the NCAA singles tournament, your path will be easier on paper this year than in past years.

Curious to see Houghton playing in the ITF last week — she lost in the first round of singles, BUT she swept her way to the title in doubles playing alongside Erin Cayetano.
Curious that she’s not playing the fall tournaments and playing pro instead.

One nice thing that the NCAA and ITA have done in recent years is be more flexible about NCAA tennis players playing low-level pro tournaments in the fall or on idle weekends in the spring, so college players can get a taste of tour life and compare themselves against pros.
Pretty clear that she doesn't have much of a future pro career in singles, but maybe she can carve out something as a doubles specialist? We haven't seen it so far at Stanford, really, but why not give it a shot? Also, I am in favor of Stanford getting better at doubles, since it is often a relative weakness for us, so good for her!
Wish I knew why Hui withdrew from Regionals, though. (And why she didn't participate in All-Americans, either.) Not a single fall match.... She played one tournament that I could find in the summer, a $75K ITF tournament in Lexington, KY where she got smoked in the first round of qualifying, but that's it. Could be that she legitimately planned on playing Regionals, felt a minor tweak and figured it wasn't worth risking it--which is totally fine, the fall season isn't the main thing, so preserving your health for the spring is absolutely the priority. It's just the not knowing that bugs me....

FYI, several other regional tournaments were in full swing over the weekend, and Eleana Yu clinched a spot at the NCAA singles championship by making the final of the Carolina Regional. She was set to face a teammate there, and they decided to just not play the final.
The match result that stands out the most is a 6-1, 6-3 drubbing of UNC's Carson Tanguilig, the preseason #26 player and someone who has played high in the Tar Heel lineup for a while now.
Nothing we can do about it now, but recognizing that you had a player whose connection to the program might be more tenuous than Lele was used to, she needed to work Yu into the lineup more last year to give her a realistic belief that she'd contribute more this year. I get that Lele was constitutionally disinclined to coddle, and her approach was undeniably effective over the arc of her career. But it also seems clear that Yu and her parents needed a little coddling.
Yu is better than Valencia Xu now. She was better than Xu last year. (Not a lot better, mind you. And not by as much as I'm sure Yu thinks. But still--better.) If Yu played #6 regularly for us last year, I have to believe that she'd still be here. And we wouldn't potentially be relying on Houghton to play 6 in a year where we could make a decent run at the title, with Ma, Yepifanova, and Xu in their last year and our best freshman in a little while in Glozman coming in.
That said, Yu would also still be here if she'd been willing to prove herself and work her way up the lineup over time--you know, like how everyone else has had to do it. So, please don't misunderstand that I'm putting this solely on the coaches. You picked Stanford for a reason, you know? And you made a good choice! But as it turns out, perhaps your self-assessment of your skills doesn't totally line up with your coach's assessment. You can either work to change that assessment, or you can give up. And while I absolutely think kids these days should have the right to transfer pretty freely, it still bugs me how readily they exercise that right rather than push through some adversity that--in the grand scheme of life--isn't all that bad.
Eleana Yu is not going to make millions of dollars on the WTA. So, accepting that fact, how do you best set yourself up for success in life? (The problem, I assume, is that she doesn't accept that fact. But if a coaching staff that wants to win thinks that six other players on the Stanford lineup are better than you right now, then that should be a blaring alarm that you're not as good as you think you are.)

John Arrillaga had a good track record for delivering upgraded athletic facilities on time. No idea who is doing this work.

There are three major athletic projects going on; Tennis, Softball and Maples. The maples locker rooms and more now one year in process.

I had some good conversations with folks on campus this weekend including with a friend who used to work in the AD. He said that the tennis reconstruction work was initiated without consultation with or approval of either Dick Gould or Tad Taube or the Taube Family. That seems like a major stakeholder management error. You don't even tell the guy whose name is on the stadium that you are going to tear it down? If true, this is another demerit for Muir.
The space that used to be the tennis stadium is just a big flat fenced-off rectangle of dirt and concrete dust right now. Across Campus Drive is a frame for what looks like indoor courts. Nothing looks remotely close to being finished. Given that no concrete is yet poured and the rainy season is almost upon us, completion could be closer to December 2025 than December 2024.

Taube south will be finished by the end of this calendar year and the varsity teams will play there this spring. The taube tennis stadium won't be ready until the 2026 season.

She does have a pretty hefty cast on her wrist in one of the pictures- so I wonder if she has a longer term injury that's going to keep her out for this year -- but there's not much information to be had.
