RE: Welcome Frank Reich - cardcrimson - 04-02-2025

Maybe, just maybe, the spring portal is open or soon will be. The coaches who are here have made bonds and connections with possible transfers, as I'd imagine the assistant coaches are the ones who drove a lot of that. Reich steps in, and that is a brobdingnagian plus towards bringing in guys, even if it's just for a year. That said, losing the connections that the assistants have made would end anything that's possibly coming our way, or could now be enticed to come our way. Just a thought.

Can the mods please stop with the hilarity that the auto replace of h u g e brobdingnagian brings?

Even more importantly they may have some influence on our current roster. The guys that had "issues" staff as it was have probably already left. Bringing in new staff members with no time at all to integrate them into a coherent whole is a recipe for disaster, at least in the short term. If Reich intended to bring in some of this "own" people he would have has about a week to make that happen in terms of negotiating terms etc. Then these new coaches would have to participate in running a spring practice in the next week. They wouldn't even yet know the names and functions of their colleagues, let alone the players. It this whole mess had evolved even a month earlier it MIGHT have made sense to do some immediate additional coaching staff changes. In the event, it couldn't reasonably be done, even assuming there were candidates "ready to go", which IMO is highly improbable.

While a "good" spring practice may indeed not be a make-or-break element of next seasons success, a disorganized incoherent one could easily convince quite a few players that Stanford doesn't have a clue on how to run a football program. There is already some evidence it does not. It might not take much more to create a rush for the portal. That is a risk even with a relatively well run spring practice given recent events. Players may be thinking about seeing what the "new guy" brings and if it isn't adequately convincing, move on.

and how many of "his guys" are currently unemployed, and if employed would be willing to leave their current job for what might be a one year gig?

Actually pretty much guaranteed to be a one year deal if Reich is serious about his longevity. It might have been possible to get some of the potential candidates to quit their current job if you paid them enough money. Of course, many of them have buyouts. It would take much more than a week or so to sort out the contract issues. On top of that, the guy on the current staff probably has a buyout too. I suspect AL had both time and money problems with  attempting to change more than he had already been forced to do. Thus he wisely decided to disallow attempting it.

RE: Welcome Frank Reich - Mick - 04-02-2025

What's the over/under on number of wins that Stanford's football team will have to achieve this fall in order for Coach Reich to return in 2026?

If Reich is too successful, he'll get NFL offers.  That will be, as they say, a good problem to have.

If one believes Reich's one year commitment statements, he apparently believes he will get NFL offers irrespective of how successful he is at Stanford.

RE: Welcome Frank Reich - fullmetal - 04-03-2025

Maybe.  He was sitting on a couch for a whole year after getting unceremoniously booted from Carolina for failing to make Bryce Young into Steve Young.  Luck probably sold Reich on this as a rehab stint -- would the NFL take him after a *bad* year at Stanford if the NFL left him on the couch last season?  I think he'll have to show something before the league looks his way as a coordinator, a position coach, analyst, or something.  I could be wrong, it could have been just slack demand in the coaching marketplace last season, but surely there was a reason.  I'm hoping for amazing success this fall.

Hiring Reich is about the best thing that Luck could have done in terms of keeping guys.  Almost all these young people want to play at the next level.  Taylor was not the guy to teach them what they need to know about that.  Now we pretty much have a coach who holds a PhD in coaching and playing in the NFL. So if I am someone like Brown or Bachmier and hope to play in the NFL who better to coach you than a guy who played 14 years in the NFL at their position.

It seems to me that if Reich can win 6 games and get us to a bowl game it would be an achievement of large proportions. If that happens Luck and Levin should simply back up  the Brinks truck to Reichs home and say How Much.

RE: Welcome Frank Reich - Spiny_Norman - 04-03-2025

If Reich can win 3 games, he should get ACC coach of the year. I doubt that Nick Saban could win much more than that with this team given its talent level, lack of depth and past struggles.

I am happy to be proven wrong.

RE: Welcome Frank Reich - BobK - 04-03-2025

Sadly WR Mosley in the portal

Worst in the SEC was Gerry DiNardo of Vanderbilt with a 5-6 record in 1991. No other SEC HC won CoY with a sub-.500 record.

Worst in Pac-12 history was Oregon State's Dave Kragthorpe with a 4-7-1 record in 1989. No other Pac-12 HC won CoY with a sub-.500 record.

Former Stanford coach Dennis Green won it at Northwestern in 1982 after a 3-8 record. No other Big 10 coach won it with less than six wins.

But the winnah and still champeen was Paul Amen of Wake Forest, who won the ACC's coach of the year award in 1956 with a 2-5-3 record.

So three wins would be just the second-worst ACC HC record to win CoY.

well 3-9 is 25% wins, allocating ties as 0.5 wins and 0.5 losses Amen (great name) had 3.5 "wins" or 35% wins

RE: Welcome Frank Reich - paloalto - 04-03-2025

It may  be difficult on the recruiting trail:

Recruit:  Will you be the head coach when I'm at Stanford?

Reich:  No

Recruit:  Who will be the head coach?

Reich:  I have no idea.

Recruit:  What system on offense will Stanford use when I'm there?

Reich:  I have no idea.

MINOR SUGGESTIONS IN RED BELOW:

Recruit:  Will you be the head coach when I'm at Stanford?

Reich:  No  That isn't the plan. Never say never, but Stanford has a double secret plus plan to find my successor who will extend my incredible (anticipated) success. I'm exceptional at my job -- I had a winning record all seasons except one in the NFL, and I'm an offensive guru who took the Philadelphia Eagles to a Super Bowl win with an average NFL quarterback in Carson Wentz and a below-average NFL QB in Nick Foles. The next coach will be even better than me.

Recruit:  Who will be the head coach?

Reich:  I have no idea.   A world-class head football coach. Stanford has perfected their approach to NIL and now knows how to exploit the portal perfectly. The next head coach will be walking into an ideal situation. If you want to play in the NFL, Stanford is the place you want to be. If you want an extraordinary life after your NFL career, Stanford is the place you need to be.

Recruit:  What system on offense will Stanford use when I'm there?

Reich:  I have no idea. See above answer. Stanford is all about the finest preparation for your future. Stanford's devotion to an exceptional offense will be second to none. They are scouring the nation for the best coach and the most unique offense suited to your talents. I'm really, really good -- I led the offense of the Philadelphia Eagles to a Super Bowl win -- and the next coach's offense will be even better than mine, if you can imagine that.

RE: Welcome Frank Reich - dabigv13 - 04-04-2025

Mick's suggested script reminds me of:
Quote:He's got a two day head start on you, which is more than he needs. Brody's got friends in every town and village from here to the Sudan, he speaks a dozen languages, knows every local custom, he'll blend in, disappear, you'll never see him again. With any luck, he's got the grail already.
