Absurd no call there. Obvious card and no advantage. West coast officiating in college is complete trash. Fortunately, it’s less of an issue in women’s games, but that is terrible,

I agree. That was an obvious yellow card but advantage was called instead. I don’t understand how that was an advantage when Holden was being grabbed and held back by a USC player with their 2 hands.

Also, scary moment when Aikey went down. I’m glad she is okay.

RE: Women’s soccer 2025 - Hieronymus - 09-04-2025

Now 2:0 goal Aikey - hey she was onsides for once today. Nice safe finish though to be fair. Kohler has been amazing today - she started the move by creating another turnover. Nifty work to get the ball to Kitahata as well for the hockey assist.

Now 3:0 Klinger finishes a deflected cross. That was a silly review, but they get it right. Clearly onsides both to Holden and by Klinger, but you didn’t need replay to see that.

3:1 USC. Our goalies badly need to work on foot skills, though that was more than just Jota at fault. Birkel had a punt earlier that was the worst soccer shank/hook I have ever seen.

4:1 and what the hell was that from Klinger? 40 yards out practically from the sideline into the very top left corner. Wow. Need to get that replay posted.

5:1 Thomas to Holden who deserved a goal tonight.

And another obvious card not shown against USC.

Finishes 5:1. This offense is scary. Harvey and Kohler were amazing today, and the amount of pressure the front 6 generates is just remarkable. The defense is better on offense then actual defense and was worrying today at times defensively, but it won’t matter much most games with this amount of offensive pressure. Not sure USC is #6, but they are still a very good team. Heck of a game overall for Stanford.

And even though it’s a really badly played advantage, you still need to card that at the next stoppage.

RE: Women’s soccer 2025 - cardfan77 - 09-04-2025

Klinger's 2nd goal was a beauty. No one expected her to take that shot and she struck perfectly. Nothing that the USC goalie can do. Holden was so close to getting her 2nd goal of the game as the last few seconds were winding down. That would have been a fun ending to a great game, especially against USC.

Lots of people starting to notice what this team is doing.  Get out to Cagan and enjoy what could be a really special season for this team…

RE: Women’s soccer 2025 - Sakibomb25 - 09-04-2025

First time watching the team (damn ACC+) and boy are they a lot of fun to watch. The offense is so good because there are such a variety of ways for the forwards and mids to score. A lot of fun to watch.

And Holden is going to be a FORCE (as long as she stays healthy) and will be fun to watch over the next four years.

Can't wait to get Emri and Bhuta back as well. Freer also impressed me as well.

Birkel played well... but that punt was... unfortunate.

Hopefully this team can go all the way this year!

Well - surprised nothing on this was posted yet.  Laissez les mauvais temps rouler - #18 UCLA - 2, (soon to be formerly) #1 Stanford - 0

RE: Women’s soccer 2025 - oldalum - 09-07-2025

The box score shows we took 21 shots, 9 on goal, and scored none. UCLA took 6 shots, 4 on goal, and scored 2.
Corner kicks and fouls were essentially even (we had one more of each than UCLA). I didn't see the game but clips of the goals showed UCLA scored in the 5th minute after Birkel got a hand on a hard shot from the left side and tipped it wide of the goal, but a UCLA player was there and blasted it in. For the goal in the second half, a UCLA player broke down the right sideline with the ball and passed it to the middle of the field where a UCLA forward had outrun Sammy Smith, putting the forward 1 on 1 with Birkel.

I finally caught extended highlights. Looked like a classic men’s team loss. Give up an early goal, scramble to catch up, move the ball some but generate few clear chances and then flail with the final touch. It happens in college soccer.

1. I said usually the issues in defense wouldn’t matter - well they did in this game. First goal Smith really gets beat twice - her 1v1 defense still isn’t good. Not much more Birkel can do. Boamah maybe needs to follow her mark a bit more, but it’s hard to really say she is in the wrong place on the rebound. Second goal -unlucky deflection starts a break. Smith isn’t fast enough to catch up though on this one I would put more fault on Evans. Needed to pull that offsides but she didn’t see it.

2. Otherwise lots of crosses to the goalie. A couple of good shots on frame and another couple just off frame. But not much to trouble UCLA. Even this team struggles breaking down a solid D when it can sit in. But the finishing was very poor. Should have managed 1 or 2 in there somewhere.

3. The press is great, but it doesn’t do much when you go down early and UCLA can sit back and pick their counters.

RE: Women’s soccer 2025 - OCcardinal - 09-08-2025

Just like 2019.  Scored 25+ goals in the first 5 games then shut out in a loss in game 6 despite dramatically outshooting our opponent.  That ended up being our only blemish on the 2019 season. Hopefully it will be the same case this season.  That second goal did show our weakness in outside back though.  I'd feel a lot better about our championship chances if we have both Emri and Bhuta back by NCAAs.

Before the season started, women's soccer analyst Chris Henderson had the UCLA game as the second-most difficult game on our schedule (Florida State being the hardest).  Before the weekend I was hoping for at least a split in LA, so I'm not super disappointed.  We had the opportunities, the ball just didn't go into the goal.  Hopefully we learn from it so this isn't repeated in NCAAs.

Stanford may very well drop from #1, but not likely very far.  Crushing #6 USC will offset the UCLA loss.  Massey has Stanford #2 (behind Duke). And most of the teams immediately behind Stanford all had blemishes this week too:

#2 Tennessee - tied #14 Memphis, barely eked out a 1-0 win over #181 Massey GA Southern
#3 Duke - tied unranked Alabama at home
#4 TCU - lost to unranked Northwestern
#5 Notre Dame - only team in the top 6 without a tie or loss this weekend (could get some #1 votes)
#6 USC - crushed by Stanford 1-5

P.S. Our fourth-most difficult game of the season, per Chris Henderson, is Thursday's game vs Clemson. Although Clemson has 3 ties and a loss, all of those blemishes were against good teams. Fingers crossed.

EDIT: I was wrong, at least as TDS goes. Notre Dame is number 1, but Florida state is #2, followed by Tennessee, Duke, UCLA and then Stanford. USC is completely unranked.

RE: Women’s soccer 2025 - Leftcoast - 09-08-2025

East Coast Bias?   I like our week over Tennessee and several others yet we dropped the furthest and UT moved up to #2.

No matter, ECB or not we'll do well enough this season to earn a decent spot in the Championship Tournament.  In soccer it's decided head-to-head on the field and we'll have our chance to prove doubters wrong (or right!)

TDS used the transitive property of sports ranking. Tennessee beat UCLA, UCLA beat Stanford, so Tennessee must be better than both. But Tennessee's offense is pretty weak (#32 in the country per Massey). They managed only 1 shot the whole game vs UCLA.  It just happened to go in.  UCLA had 17 shots vs TN, 5 on goal. Kind of the opposite of our game vs UCLA.

The coaches' poll is more rational than TDS this week.  Though I think Tennessee is overrated at #1. Massey has Stanford at #2 and Tennessee at #9.  https://masseyratings.com/csocw/ncaa-d1/ratings  Massey's statistical ratings didn't move Stanford at all this week (USC blowout cancelled out the UCLA loss), while Tennessee dropped 5 places.  That makes sense given their respective performances this past week.

Tomorrow's opponent Clemson is ranked 38th in Massey which makes them the 3rd ranked ACC opponent on Stanford's schedule behind Florida State and Wake Forest. This is a classic trap game three time zones away against a dangerous opponent 5 days after an emotional loss.

Yep. Not an easy game.  I'll be quite happy with a win.

leftcoast - Leftcoast - 09-10-2025

I’m convinced.  Is the Clemson game on TV?
