If Kingsbury would be willing to take the job I'd be 1000% in support of him, but I'd assume he's angling for another NFL shot. So I'm going to give my tiers.

TIER 1

Jim Leonhard: Has only produced results with defenses. High-energy style would seem to translate to effective recruiting. Doesn't have a direct connection to Stanford but does have extensive connections to current defensive staff. But he hasn't been mentioned anywhere as an option.
Kliff Kingsbury: Sure seems like a great offensive mind. Has CFB and NFL coaching experience. Personality a little aloof. Would he take the job? If he does, would seem like a sure thing to bolt to NFL as soon as an offer comes in.

TIER 2

Greg Roman: Obvious understanding of the program, very clear offensive identity that is sorely needed. Not an exciting hire but would seem to have a very high floor, with a pretty high ceiling too. Despite being mentioned in a number of coaching searches, has never gotten the job. At this point, he might be happy in the role and not be looking to bolt.

TIER 3

Frank Reich: Seemed to do a pretty good job. Getting over the 3-9 hump, especially with the personnel depletions, means a lot.

TIER 4

Tavita Prichard: Despite his face and name all over the place (in relation to the program), we really know nothing about his coaching ability. He was an OC with a HC play caller. He's a QB coach of a transcendent talent but under Kingsbury, who's coached many QBs to success. I have zero actual knocks on him, we just know basically nothing about him despite his years in the program.
Jason Garrett: I actually really like Jason Garrett. Not an exciting hire at all but he was actually pretty OK in Dallas, all things considering. I shot his wire on a game day and came away liking him a lot more than expected.

TIER 5

Pep Hamilton: Often mentioned for this job. Must be a great guy because the results just aren't there. Lost play calling duties to Roman at Stanford and has been pretty underwhelming at every stop. 3 years with the Colts was his longest stop anywhere. The major caveat to his production is that if he's a guy who people keep bringing around, he must be a positive person. If he'd be willing to be a CEO coach instead of a play caller, he might be a tremendous fit. But if it's a Peter Principle issue, that could be a major problem.

WILD CARDS

Jeff Monken: Results at Army are impressive. But a transition from a military school to the NIL landscape is unique.
Jon Gruden: People have talked about it. Can't imagine Stanford would let someone with those emails onto campus. High-energy, but does he seem like a fit? Could be a jackpot hire, could be disastrous.

Other names exist, but these are the ones I'm noting today. I would be happy with anyone through Tier 4. I could be talked into Pep Hamilton IF he isn't the play caller.

Hope all is well.

I like your Tier1, but not the other Tiers, for the following reason:

Assumed Goal = Our Aim is to be a perennial Top20 Football Program, that can Win ACC Championships regularly, & make it into the Top12 CFP every couple of years.

We need to be able to have a Coach who has the Name, Charisma & Reputation, to Win Recruiting Battles for what will be a "VERY VERY SMALL NUMBER of 4* HS and Transfer Football Players, who have the grades & academics".

There might be one or two 4 star football players at each Position each year who could 'qualify academically' & We have to have a HeadCoach whose Name and Charisma (and ability to relate to todays Young Football 4* players), wins that battle vs a NotreDame or UCLA, or Cal, Texas, USC

The names you list in Tier2-Tier5, in my opinion arent going to win Recruiting/Transfer Battles for a "4* FootballPlayer with the Acadamics'' against NotreDame's Marcus Freeman or USC's Lincoln Riley.

Another way of looking at this would be:

Would NotreDame or USC consider anyone from Tier2 to Tier5 to be their Head Coach ?
In my opinion, Our Football Goals & Aspirations should not be lower than NotreDame or USC's.

As far as Stanford is concern:

"Stanford’s search has been kept close to the vest. Washington Commanders quarterbacks coach Tavita Pritchard (Andrew Luck’s former backup QB at Stanford) was a popular name early on but may be cooling off as he leans toward sticking in the NFL. This search has long expected to have more NFL names in the mix."

The fact that this process is dragging on so long is not a good sign. Stanford is going to end up hiring someone who was far down on the list. Might as well stay with Reich.

Staying with Reich is not an option, he doesn't want the job.

IMO one can't conclude anything based on the "process dragging on so long". It is quite possible the anointed coach has ongoing other responsibilities. Announcing his departure at this moment might not be an option he would entertain. He may feel he owes his team and his employer his best efforts until his team's season is over. What a concept!

This is my wish list, not a prediction. I think Pritchard is the single most likely person on the planet to get the job. There are 40+ people I think are reasonable to go after who I would rather have be our head coach.
