Davis Warren, good show
22/34, for 310yds 9.1 avg, 1 TD and no TOs.

He looked confident, especially in Q4.
Clutch game winning drive.
Defense was exhausted. Warren answered!

That game went more than halfway into the fire, it's gonna turn out a bit extra crispy in spots. Props to Hawaii, they damn near had us beaten and Alejado should power them well into the top half of the Mountain West.

Miami coming up on a short week and it's tough to see that game playing out in a way where we don't get creamed.

I wonder whether the team gains from winning in the way they did.
Both O and D came out on top, when it really counted.

Mid third quarter I started to dream about being able to hang with Miami. Then Kilstrom and Cooper went down and the dream turned into a nightmare.

Impressive poise by the team to finish this off. We’ll see what can be cobbled up and duct taped for next weeks.

P.s. we have good receivers

Man oh man oh man. Some thoughts:

Word of the year has to be: Progress. Beating a team (narrowly, despite what the final scoreboard says) that narrowly beat you last year definitely counts.

Props to Davis Warren on the last drive, which has to be a great boost of confidence for him and the team around him. That third-and-six throw was clutch. Grading him for the whole game reveals maybe a less than stellar performance, but the moment was NOT too big for him.

At the end of the day, Micah Ford scored two TDs and will for the foreseeable future be the team's offensive MVP. He is tough. The staff have to learn how to better manage his load, however.

Atticus Joseph, with the best true frehman debut by a WR since...? Happy to see evidence that Pritchard and offensive staff have a good eye for talent.

Davis Warren went the entire game without getting sacked. THE STANFORD OFFENSIVE LINE DID NOT GIVE UP A SACK. It's only one game, against a G6 opponent, so there are different ways to interpret this startling bit of info. But, to me, it's a sign that the coaching has really turned a corner. Perhaps the brightest light of the day, honestly.

Alas, the darkness comes in the form of injury. No glossing over the loss of Kilstrom, based on the performance of the O-line after he went down. On the last drive, at least, the protection held up enough for Warren to be effective.

Don't believe Scotty Edwards started on defense, though he did play some. Another message to the team that the best players will play, I think.

Kaminski had an unbelievable game, we got steady to good performances from Tafiti and Green and Rose, the veteran defensive leaders, at least I thought so. But I would be remiss if I didn't shout out the rest of the secondary. I thought Leroy Bryant played well, and Nicholson just wasn't thrown at much. Darrius Davis is a big hitter. Charlie Eckhardt is a gamer. Very solid coverage, almost no missed tackles.

Puzzling to see Mattingly and Johnson play so much at LB.

Final thought: I know there weren't many fans, but the cameras consistently panned to people who were engaged with the game and having a good time. A loss would have been a real downer. Maybe someday, in the not so so distant future, there will truly be a crowd again at Stanford football home games.

it would help if the playcalling wasn’t running off tackle. The Stanford O line simply cannot handle that.

Certainly some questionable play calling, including the two straight off tackles on first and second down clinging to a lead in the forth. Even before that, as well, especially in the run up before the intentional grounding, the intention delay of game and the punt. The delay of game coming out of the timeout wasn't good, either. So many similarities to the Turtle. Gotta clean them up. . . .

Very entertaining game. My Stanford report card
Area, Grade, My read,

Quarterback, A, Potentially transformative. Against essentially the same opponent in last year's opener, Stanford threw for 109 yards. Stanford averaged only 222 passing yards per game for the entire 2025 season. Tonight Warren threw for 310. It was 5-for-5 for 58 yards on Stanford's go-ahead drive after it had surrendered the lead.
Running game, B+, Physical, reliable, complementary. Now Stanford can make a defense pay for concentrating resources on Ford. Sedrick Irvin also contributed 43 yards on eight carries, so this doesn't necessarily have to become a one-back offense.
Receivers, A-, Much more explosive than expected. Here's one statistic I find particularly encouraging: five Stanford receivers had at least 40 receiving yards. Hall in particular intrigues me. He had essentially lost his freshman season to injury after getting hurt in the 2025 opener, and Stanford had been talking him up throughout camp. Tonight's 57-yard reception suggests there may actually be something substantial there.
Offensive line, B+, Encouraging protection and run production. Stanford's offensive line looked considerably more functional than the unit we've watched struggle to control games during the program's recent decline.
Overall offense, A-, Biggest positive of the evening. The offense looked like a real Power Four offense. 483 total yards. 310 passing. 173 rushing. 6.8 yards per play. 21 first downs. Zero turnovers. Tonight's production was roughly 58% more total offense than Stanford averaged last season.
Run defense, A, Dominant. Stanford allowed only 46 rushing yards on 22 attempts—2.1 yards per carry.
Pass defense, C+, Excellent for three quarters, alarming in the fourth
Pass rush, B, Some disruption, enormous turnover at the end
Special teams, B+, Blocked punt/safety was a major play. Charlie Eckhardt's blocked punt for a safety was not cosmetic. It helped Stanford take control early in the second half and contributed to the 23–7 advantage.
Discipline, C+, Eight penalties for 62 yards is too many, especially for a first year coach.
Coaching/game management, B, Very good plan; fourth-quarter wobble needs attention. Stanford's defense was gassed. That will happen earlier vs. Miami.
Overall, B+, Better than the final score suggests in some ways, worse in one important way

They expect something like 41-7.
Canes want Playoff seeding so they are going to run up the score.
Their offense is loaded with NFL prospects and we will not be able to run on them.

Warren has decent awareness, and aside from (or maybe evidenced by) the intentional grounding penalty, he should get some credit for no sacks on the game, as I did see the Stanford offensive tackles losing some blocks. Nice job. But he did overthrow some guys, and guys dropped at least two crucial passes on him, and he did burn a worm with one pass. Room to improve, but I think he did fine. When last season's natl champ runner-up defense comes to play next week, we'll see what that praise is worth. I think he'll be okay if the OL can hold their own. Credit to Warren for standing tall and finishing passes in the face of pressure as well.

The defense had a harder time stopping the Hawai'i quick slant passing offense, and they carved us up a bit. There was less emphasis on pass rush in the second half of the game, iirc, and that hurt. Maybe that was the response to the quick pass offense. Certainly not getting as much rest after the offense started stalling (after losing Kilstrom) hurt the defense.

Stanford seemed to win the game on two hold-your-breath replay reviews. Not a great place to be in where the referees decide your fate, but things worked out this time. Have to do better to control our destiny.

Defense came up big with the forced fumbe (Zach Rowell) and subsequent fumble recovery for TD (Tafiti). I appreciate the hesitation as he considered downing the ball inside the five yard line to maintain possession...would have been okay either way imo. And the Stanford commitment to run defense clearly never wavered and paid off with that backfield hit. Secondary got carved up in the second half though...if Hawai'i can do that, so can the rest of the ACC.

Special teams came up big with the punt block for safety. Great job to shed the block up front and get in the ball's trajectory by Charlie Eckhardt I think. Almost downed a punt at the half yard line but for some toes over the end zone plane!

Blackburn had a bit of a coming out party at one point (which was great), but where was that the rest of the game? Also, was he the one who dropped the pass that would have been a TD? Rough drop, whoever that was. Let's get back to TE University game-planning!

JonAnthony Hall had some nice YAC moves...well done. The WR corps in general looked nice. Let's hope they rise to the level of ACC competition.
