Apologies for the somewhat obscure reference. Didn't want my post to get too long. Lord Jim: Joseph Conrad's story of an honorable man who has a panic attack when he abandons what he thinks is a sinking ship, only to find it didn't go down. Spends the rest of his life trying to deal with the moment of panic.
The moment in pro Sports that always seems to me to be just such a situation was the NFC championship game in 1989, when the 49ers pummeled a hitherto high-flying Jim Everett into submission, to the point that he more or less sacked himself toward the end of the game. Everett was never the same QB afterwards. But his situation was different, than Williamson's. Williamson is a young man with a bright future who, by all appearances, just had the pressure of the moment get too great for him. Hopefully, he's resiliant and comes back knocking last-second, game-winning field goals through the uprights for the rest of his college and pro carreer. Everett panicked and more or less quit while his teammates were continuing to fight the good fight. Very hard to live that down.
Here's an old article from the LA Times about Everett's situation, and how he was still dealing with it years later.

Really disagree on taking shots to the end zone at that point. I could go for some more runs up the gut, though. The one thing not to do would be to leave OSU any time. I thought Williamson had only missed once inside the 40 all year?

I don't have a big problem with Shaw's strategies in the last drive. You have to have confidence that your kicker is going to make a field goal like that. If you don't, you need to find yourself a new kicker. Frankly, I blame Shaw more for not being able to rally his troops for one more charge in overtime. Seems like after the missed field goal we just quietly folded our tents and headed for the exits.
I feel bad for Williamson, but hey, it's just a game (did I say that?), and if it's the worst thing that ever happens to him in his life he should probably consider himself lucky.

Shaw was too busy to watch Williamson freaking out behind the bench on the last drive, so I really can't blame him for ending the game like every other sane coach in America would.
Um... if the plan all along on that drive was to get close enough to try a field goal from 35 yards, IMO Shaw should have found time to check in on his kicker's state of mind. There are very few college kickers for whom a 30+ yarder is a sure thing in clutch situations. If you have any questions and time left, you try to get as close as you can.
As for the wildcat... I think you need one of two things (or both) for that play to work. Either it needs develop super quickly or there needs to be some different ways in which develops. Ours is neither. The defense knows exactly what to expect the moment they see the formation and have enough time to disrupt it. Yes, I know we had some success with it early on but that was before there was enough tape on what to expect from it.

We can blame Shaw, but isn't it the special teams coach's responsibility to coach up the kickers. The kickoffs out-of-bounds were so tiresome this year. And that odd bunch formation we used for kickoff coverage cost us a long return. Shaw did play it a little bit like he had Adam Vinatieri, but at the same time he put us in a position with a >90% chance of victory.Â
