Is the number of offers so far really out of line with past years? Rivals lists approximately twice as many offers for the 2015 class as we have noted so far for the 2016 class. Obviously there will be more offers later, especially when the staff sees kids in action over the summer. However, this could just be a sign that the staff is being more aggressive about identifying and offering these kids earlier in the process. That would make sense in light of the potential for an early signing period this December.Â

I suspect it's much greater than at an equivalent point last year (but can't prove it). Whether we'll end up with more or fewer, who knows.

Seems greater than ever. Probably just a bumper crop of good students. I hope it's because our current run of success started planting seeds in these kids' minds. "I should also focus on academics so I have a chance at Stanford."

Well, Costello's important in that he is (apparently) first choice at the QB position. But really, I'd be pretty happy with any elite QB. (And Stanford should always aim at landing an elite QB given its history.) As we know Andrew Luck was, like, the third choice QB in his class, and Kevin Hogan was the... ? choice QB in his.

I think it was a giant mistake not getting a QB in 2015. TJ Green still may come and Tyler was a QB in high school. Still we should have grabbed the best QB we could have gotten. You never know with injuries. It took Ohio State 3 QBs this season to win a national championship. The position is hard to predict so it's always safer to have a QB recruited every season. Hogan was a 3 Star and he turned out pretty damn good.

Well, we probably want to have four QB's on the roster at any time. We're ok this year, assuming Crower doesn't leave (Hogan, Crower, Burns, Chryst), but of course both Hogan and Crower will be gone after this year. So next year we will be down to to Burns, Chryst, and a true freshman, (Costello or whoever else). In theory, we have Dallas Lloyd, who could move back from safety to QB if we got hit with the injury bug. But caution might have dictated taking another QB this year, even if the plan is for him to be a backup.
As for only having one QB offer out, remember that recruiting QB's is different from recruiting almost any other position. QB's decide early (the summer between their junior and senior years, typically), and there is usually a domino effect as QB's commit. If for some reason Costello doesn't come, we'll go down our list.

Over on the Bootboard they are posting as fact (but with no one actually directly making the call) that Reihner, Lyons, Crower and Young are going elsewhere to play their final year as grad students.

Rumor has it that there may be a walk-on QB, T.J. Green. He won't help for actually playing next year, but may be useful for scout teams, etc.

While I cannot quite recall Shaw saying so explicitly, it is my impression that Shaw doesn't want more than one actual QB offer out at a time. That doesn't mean not recruiting others, but I think he wants to make his top choice feel wanted.

Well, Rinher has definitely stated he is going to Penn State. We've talked about Lyons going to Michigan here, largely on the basis that Harbaugh hired his mom. There has been some speculation that Crower would leave, but mostly that has been speculation that he'd want to have a chance to start somewhere. I hadn't heard anything about Young, but like Crower, he might want a chance to start somewhere.

Lyons is the only one whose departure would be material for the team. He seemed to be on track to start at one of the DB positions. I don't see any reason for him to leave, except if he's not happy at the school generally or isn't getting along with the staff.Â

I think these kids are also students. Lyons can't play at Michigan unless he's in Grad School. The grad school is the key. Â

I don't think any of those four leaving would be an indictment of Shaw or his staff. Barring disaster Crower won't get any playing time this year and Young is in a very deep backfield.

Agreed, the conclusion that they dislike Shaw completely ignores a playing time component. I do not want to see any of these young men go to another school to finish their college careers having followed most of them since their days in high school, but they are doing what they feel is best for both their education and chance to see the playing field.
Rheiner is a backup center who hasn't received meaningful snaps and may fall to a third string position this coming season.
Lyons lost plenty of playing time to Harris this year and with very talented redshirt frosh and true sophomores coming into the picture, play time may become more scarce. Matriculating to Michigan with some familiar staff doesn't seem like a bad move for him.
Crower probably sees that he will no longer be the clear #2 this coming season with Burns or Chryst taking the position.
Young sees even less snaps with Wright becoming the preferred powerback and Sanders/McCaffrey becoming the preferred dynamic backs.
Good luck to all of them regardless of whether they choose to leave or not.

Lyons leaving would be a big loss. He would start this year in at least nickel if not base coverage. We do not have much experience at CB besides Harris. However, Lyons leaving is not an indictment of Shaw. His mom getting a job at Michigan provides Shaw air cover.
Lyons is going to have a battle for playing time at Michigan as they have more returning experienced players in the secondary than Stanford does. Michigan was not good last year but that was primarily due to their offense. Their defense was solid.

Getting back to the subject at hand, the DL pool finally looks pretty good in 2016 after some dry years.
Rand, Okonya, and Peek all seem extremely interested in Stanford.
Has anyone heard whether Connor Murphy has legitimate interest in Stanford (or are we just making assumptions based on the fact his brother attended)?Â
Those 4 could make a very good (and much needed) DL class.
The OL prospects are not as clear to me. Lots of offers out there, but I haven't read that any of the guys with offers have specific interest in Stanford or even that they highly prioritize academics. Since Tucker didn't take a redshirt, it would be nice to get another future LT in the pipeline. Hall and Dreyer seem more suited to RT.

Matt Farniok          OT in Rivals250 #19 OT (Rivals)
Devery Hamilton       OT #22 OT (Rivals)
Michal Menet          OT in Rivals100 #7 OT (Rivals)
All are 4 star recruits. Getting 2 of these prospects would project to shore up the tackle spot.

Those three plus Thomas Schaffer (Wes Annan's teammate and solid 3-star recuit) have offers. Four-star Luke Wattenberg may be a possibility too. I'm sure there are other potential guys out there too. I just haven't seen academic info on any of them or even any strong expressions of interest. The interviews of the DL guys seem more positive, but it's admittedly very early.Â
