UPDATE: Move me into the Mick/Leftcoast column. After listening to Baggerly on KNBR on the way home this afternoon from SFO, I think we will see a change in leadership. I'll probably take flak for this, but I think MLB has its share of "good ol' boy" syndrome, which works every bit as much against Farhan as his record does. The reverse example would be Melvin. I'm honestly hard pressed to see where he adds value, especially with motivating the young players. What is it about 2nd string catchers that makes them managerial candidates?
I do think they both need to go.
Because they have time to analyze the game and “shadow manage”. Heck, I can think of one backup C who has well enough to earn a HOF plaque as a manager.

As for bagging it a game early, with a very big payday coming, I understand his concern about exposing himself to a possible injury. Since the game is meaningless, I have no problem with that at all. Heck, Webb also begged off pitching tomorrow because he wants to focus on the upcoming birth of his first kid.
It is not unusual for big time players to close up a game or two early if their teams have nothing to play for. I would love to see him in a Giants uniform next year.

It'll take $200 mms. for Snell. My guess is he'll want something like seven years, $220 million. When he's on, he's unhittable. He is MLB's all-time career leader in strikeouts per inning at 11.2 K's per nine innings pitched and sixth all-time in fewest hits per nine innings at 6.89. In that last category, he's actually getting better...he's improved four of the last five seasons. The last two years, he's been at 5.8 and 5.6 which would put him ahead of Nolan Ryan (career leader) by almost a full hit per nine innings. At the same time, he pitched 104 innings this year, the seventh of nine years during his career when he's failed to hit 130 innings. He's the anti-Logan Webb in that regard.
Be interesting to see how much Soto gets from (I'm assuming) the Yankees. $31 million this year, he'll be 26 next year. He's worth $500 million.
I don't mind any vet taking the day off. Heck, I'm attending the game today, my first game of the year. I'd rather see Birdsong than Webb, and the way Fitzpatrick's playing, I'd rather see him than Chapman, and the rest of the youngsters.

Rough year. 80-82 finish. I went to the game yesterday, 6-1 dispiriting loss, Yaz and Chapman played a few innings, then sat. Snell didn't pitch so Birdsong started and got lit up.
The Giants batting finished at 101 OPS+ (13th of 30) and runs per game was 17th of 30.
Giant pitching finished 17th in both OPS+ (101) and runs allowed (4.28).
Giant fielding finished T13 in fielding % (.985), 14th in errors(87), 8th in double plays (135), but 27th in Rtot (-40),
So, basically a slightly-below-average MLB team.
Attendance for the three Cards games was 35k, 36k and 32k for the last day. Giants finished with 2,647,736, 12th in MLB, about a 7% increase over last year and the 7th largest increase in MLB, so...at least the marketing department did their job.
No news on Farhan or Melvin yet.
3B Chapman, with the expensive new contract promises the playoffs next year:

I feel moderately good about it, given the improvements many of the rookies and second year players have had. I doubt we'll get Snell, I think Ray will opt in, we should keep Yaz, I think both Stanford alums, Erik Miller (who struck out Ohtani five times) and Tristan Beck will improve, as will most of the other young players. Jung Hoo Lee will return and should improve.
Giants have 11 players under contract at approx. $111 mms. (I'm including Ray and Flores, not including Snell; also Webb, Hicks, Tay. Rogers, Chapman, not Conforto or Canha) and a lot of players somewhere in the arbitration process. I highly doubt we get Soto, outside shot at Adames and Ha-Seong Kim, don't think there are any other free agents we want.

I would imagine that Posey will be responsible for the development and implementation of an overall vision for the Operations group (and, of course, final say re: high dollar talent transactions) while leaving oversight of the day-to-day activities to a strong right hand person with significant operations experience.

To be somewhat fair, the three years prior to Farhan's arrival were a complete disaster. Other than the 107-win year, they have been around/just under .500 most of the time. They need to improve in virtually every area; domestic scouting, overseas scouting, minor league development, major league coaching & training (where do they rank with injuries? Must be near the top.) and, frankly, game-day managing and coaching. I'd poach whoever I could from the Yankees, Guardians, Orioles or Dodgers.

Nope, Posey is our guy now. I trust he will staff his team with winners like him instead of analytics whizzes who think they are the smartest guys in the room.
Injuries are product of Zaidi’s desire to bring in older guys in lieu of focusing on developing younger talent.
The number of players he signed despite their injury histories was ridiculous. He made Trent Baalke look like an amateur in that regard.
I absolutely agree with the notion that SF needs a complete overall of the operations department especially scouting and development.
I am comfortable with Bob Melvin and his staff. With better talent, I think they can be competitive with AZ and SD. LA? A major infusion of talent will be required to be on a par with them.

No surprise there. I like what Posey said about bringing in a person with a scouting background. My first thought was about Brian Sabean and what he brought to the role.

After the press conference, Alex Pavlovic had a 1:1 interview with Greg Johnson. What asked about what he wanted to see re: the Giants identity, Johnson said he wanted to move away from 1+1 contracts. He feels they are detrimental to building a cohesiveness in the clubhouse. In essence, those contracts create a “hired gun” approach in which a player knows he won’t be part of the team after one year if he produces. Thus, he doesn’t buy into the team’s ethos.
I think both Johnson and Posey are focused on creating a team that wins AND one that fans can identify with. One of Zaidi’s biggest failures was his lack of understanding of how the team connects to the fan base. That certainly won’t be a problem for Posey.

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the need for/role of analytics. Historically those who eschew data to rely on experience and "gut" have fared poorly.
That said, it is a piece of the puzzle and may be one in which the areas of competitive advantage are limited at this time. When you're the only team playing moneyball, you can leverage that you value things differently then other teams value them. Once that diffuses accross the league and certain traits/stats are "appropriately" valued, the competitive edge is gone. No doubt there are new/better analytics that some teams use and keep guarded closely, but given the mobility of talent between front offices its hard to maintain any advantage for too long. Perhaps things have gone too far and we are now undervaluing certain more traditional traits that the old scouts love and that is where the competitive advantage lies. Like the power run game of Stanford under Harbaugh/early Shaw, there can be value in zagging when everyone else moves in a different direction.

Summary: I think we see a payroll of $200 million+. Add to that benefits, bonuses and misc. charges and I believe SF will be just below the $241 threshold (perhaps in the low $230’s).
Projected salaries for key contributors:
Tyler Rogers, $5.5 million. Better season in 2024 than 2023, 2.82 ERA, walked six batters in 70+ innings, most appearances in NL for the third time in his six year career.
Late Night LaMonte Wade Jr., $4.7 million. 20% better than league average last season, 19% better than league average this season, .380 OBP. Maybe a L/R platoon with Wilmer Flores, if Flores can recover physically. Wade is 31, injury-prone. Bryce Eldridge is around the corner.
Mike Yastrzemski, $9.5 million. Classic fourth outfielder, 4.7 WAR, 47th among outfielders over past three years. Giants H/R leader since 2019.
Camilo Doval, $4.6 million, I kid you not. Ranked #18 reliever on Saves+Holds (was #10 last year). All-Star in 2023, 39 saves. Listed as #62 most valuable player in MLB coming into 2024 season.
Projected salaries for the four arbitration-eligible Giants (msn.com)
Chapman was #2 in NL overall WAR at 7.1, behind Ohtani (9.2).
Webb was 10th in pitcher WAR and ERA, 7th in wins, #1 in innings pitched. 2nd lowest HRs per nine innings.
Rogers and Walker were #1 and #2 in NL appearances, Stanford's Miller was #6. Talk about bullpen overuse.
Doval was still sixth in NL in saves (23).
Bailey, 2nd most caught stealing, 2nd most double plays as catcher, 2nd most passed balls, 5th most putouts.
Chapman, 3rd most assists, most errors, most double plays in NL, most total zone runs.

Read that Posey considers it a priority to bring back Blake Snell. Hope that's true, I'd rather see him as a Giant than a Dodger.
